Judge refuses to toss out felony extortion case against Fresno City Council President

"A Fresno Superior Court judge ruled Thursday that a felony attempted extortion case against Fresno City Council President Nelson Esparza could move forward, denying a motion made by Esparza’s attorneys to drop the case. Esparza will be back in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors in July charged Esparza with one felony count of attempted extortion and one misdemeanor count of attempting to violate the city charter. The complaint alleges Esparza threatened the employment of former Fresno City Attorney Doug Sloan, who later left his post for a similar job in Santa Monica."

Sorry to refer you to these pigs, but this story is serious and I used the headline to sum up.
Versus the racist remarks riot in LA, this story has depth. I think it is important to share, and unlikely to gain the attention deserved in our modern society.
The level of dysfunction in our political representatives is worthy of response and reprisal.

I read the linked Bee article, but I still don't understand what the Council President wanted from the City Attorney. As an abstract question of local governmental operation, it is plausible to say that the City Attorney only represents the city as a whole and only undr direction of the council as a whole.Perhaps the City Charter specifically addresses this question, and obliges the City Attorney to follow instruction from individual council members. If so, this could lead to serious conflict of interest problems which this case demonstrates.

On the other hand, I could easily be missing something. Please help me out.

I cried when I wrote this song. Sue me if I play too long.

@fire with fire I believe it all comes down to the Council President threatening the city attorney with the loss of job if the attorney served all city council people, particularly the one who was not of the right party persuasion. The attorney took it as a threat and improved his prospects in Santa Monica. The nature of the conversation was disclosed through emails and admissions, I believe. Without detailing the sins and sickness of our local power structure, the prevailing group of Democrats are some lowlife motherfuckers, literally and figuratively in bed with developers.
perhaps it was always thus.
except for the squalor. this is medieval compared to decades past.
and these clowns hold office to keep it this way.

@kelly insofar the the threat. Insofar as the whole council being crooked mfers, I can't say, but wouldn't be surprised.
Interesting stuff, kelly. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
I am glad the attorney got out of there, and will be allowed to seek justice as a purported victim of a crime.
