Juan Guaido may be gone but Venezuela's government still not in control

Venezuela's opposition party may have kicked Juan Guaido to the curb, but that still doesn't mean that the U.S. can't just take over Venezuela’s embassy.

The US took custody of the Venezuelan embassy and official residences in Washington and New York after the diplomatic mission of the country’s opposition was closed following the removal of Juan Guaido as Venezuelan interim president, people familiar with the matter said.
The US Department of State took over the buildings on Monday, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is sensitive.

It may seem logical for Venezuela's state assets to be under the control of Venezuela's government, but the world isn't logical.

The status of the Venezuelan gold stash guarded in the vaults of the Bank of England in London is uncertain after the dissolution of the interim government of the country. The 31 tons of gold (1.02 millon troy ounces), valued at more than $1.85 billion, were disputed by the two governments of the country, one presided over by Nicolas Maduro, and the other by interim president Juan Guaido, who integrated a provisional government in 2019 after disputing the legality of the presidential ballot.

Guaido's "government" has spent a huge amount of the national reserves. I'm not certain where they spent it all, but I bet it has something to do with corruption.

(Reuters) - Venezuela's interim government, led by Juan Guaido, spent some $198 million during the three years when they formed an opposition to President Nicolas Maduro's administration, according to a government presentation published on Thursday.
...That opposition board of the central bank has managed an account at the New York Federal Reserve, which held an initial $341 million.

Manuel Rodriguez, president of the opposition central bank's administrative board, told deputies that $198.2 million from the U.S. account was transferred to the interim government, which allocated the money to a fund.
