It's 9/26 and ancient evil continues to burden us all

Today is the anniversary of the Papal Bull Dudum siquidem, some truly evil shit that supplemented the bull Inter caetera, which followed up on the bull Aeterni regis and, between them made all lands not ruled by christian rulers and the inhabitants thereof the property of either Spain or Portugal. The slaughter, rape, rapine, enslavement and asset stripping of much of the world was legitimized by this heinous christian bullshit. I and others have written about this horrible bull and its horrific and genocidal repercussions before, and I'm really not up to it today. As a result, I'm mostly posting a reprise of a comment I made in Joe Shiskpack's Evening Blues last night. Conrad didn't know the half of it, and Belgium was a lightweight and latecomer to the game, but yes, the Horror! The horror! But, hey, can one expect any less?

Were there really a moral arc to the universe, the victims would rise up, kick some ass, and take back all that is theirs, especially all the wealth in all those cheesy cathedrals and such. Not to fear, however, there is neither a moral arc nor a moral Ark, and the universe, once laughing behind our backs, is now laughing in our faces. Please go about your business as usual.

'Doctrine of Discovery' documentary?

Curious if readers here are familiar with the documentary (I believe) put out by the 38 plus 2 group? If not it is an excellent introduction to the understanding of how The Church codified into their teachings the Divine right of conquer and the ability to treat barbarically anyone who stood in the way.

I've written in greater detail about this fiasco at one time or another, and simply have to sit down and assemble everything into a citeable column some day, but I've been busy like you wouldn't believe lately.

Just my two cents:

the real problem is not only that we have committed tremendous acts of barbarism in the past, legitimized and encouraged by the church, but that we continue to do the very same today. Current examples are too numerous to list, but we all know them. Just a few that are in the news right now; the Amazon, Honduras, and the Boreal Forest in Canada, all are being pillaged and destroyed along with the people who live there.

The planet is telling us in no uncertain terms that we must stop. Yet here we are, as you say, business as usual. We must be the most idiotic species ever.

The US has apparently learned it can use its leverage over natural resources to pursue a geopolitical chess game which sees it heavily countering Russia’s influence over the future of the energy markets.

If you look closely enough, the ulterior motives driving Washington’s foreign policy agenda are readily apparent even in the mainstream media.

“Our great supply of natural gas is a boon for geopolitical leverage,” Ellen Wald, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center writes in the Hill. “We saw in the Middle East last week how energy production and distribution plays into geopolitics. With so much natural gas, we can work to counteract Russian leverage in Europe, we can supply allies and we can free ourselves of some unnecessary foreign entanglements.

For years, myself and like-minded individuals have attempted to highlight that US-led wars are almost solely driven by oil, natural gas, money, and geopolitics. For a while, we were labeled as conspiracy theorists, or terrorist sympathizers, or what have you, but following former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel’s comments that “people say we’re not fighting for oil. Of course we are,” this mantra became a lot harder to maintain.

Even Donald Trump openly suggested the US hadn’t gone far enough in its bid to plunder and control the world’s oil supply (twice).

Despite these many admissions – and believe me, I could write an entire book on this topic – the issue is always framed by the mainstream media in different terms, particularly when it comes to foreign adversaries and the geopolitical significance of oil and natural gas.

“Russia Uses Its Oil Giant, Rosneft, as a Foreign Policy Tool” claims the New York Times. In this article, the writer alleges that “Russia is increasingly wielding oil as a geopolitical tool, spreading its influence around the world and challenging the interests of the United States.”

The guy who detailed what happened to Iraqi men sure puts the lie to our spreading Freedom and Democracy in Iraq.

In Buddhist philosophy,

"good" and "evil" are described as positive and negative forces, much like the elements that make up a single atom. But that seems too sanitized when you're feeling angry. Buddhism is challenging that way. Battling between emotions and reason.

I used to believe that if there was a way to understand what creates and motivates evil, we could eradicate it. Now I'm not so sure. So, to keep my sanity, I've ascribed to a life where I create value not only out of the positive things that touch my life, but challenge myself to create value out of the negative things that touch my life. That can be a tall order depending on the emotional impact of said negative forces. And sometimes, the pain and anger are just too much.

Yes, it's true. Evil exists today just as it did from the beginning of time. And sadly many of us are not any more enlightened about the human soul as we were 500 years ago.

Perplexing. Horrifying. Soulbreaking.

I have no solutions to offer. I can only commiserate with you and other fellow human beings over the difficulty of living in a world where we as a species can do such horrible things to each other.

But France, the low countries, and especially the UK were as bad if not worse.

It's notable that most of the DNA in Mexico and Peru is still native, yet in areas of English settlement, most is not. The English were more likely to eliminate the natives than mix with them.

The Spanish were about domination and subjugation, the English were about eradication.
