Description:

Bernie Sanders is not your typical politician. And this is not your typical presidential election. What we are witnessing and, most importantly, what we have a chance to participate in, is a real conversation about the things that matter: equality, climate change, jobs, immigration, health care, economic opportunity, justice and everything else that affects our future individually and collectively.

Bernie has given us a chance to re-think not just this election, but how we view American politics at every level and how we fulfill our roles as citizens and as voters. “Bern: Part One” is the first installment of a larger film project that explores Bernie Sanders the man, Bernie Sanders the presidential candidate and Bernie Sanders as a community of people who are lending their voices to this movement.

In the coming months, we will examine why his ideology has resonated so deeply with people across the country – many who had long ago written off the political system as hopelessly flawed – and how it has inspired them to change how we engage in the political process and how that process engages with us.

MEET THE FILMMAKERS

Miriam Paredes – Director/Producer

Miriam is an independent commercial producer, documentary filmmaker and writer who, after 20+ years in the business, still feels pretty lucky to be able to make a living doing something that she loves.

Jay Matthew – Executive Producer

For almost a decade, Jay has worked as a consultant for political candidates, organized social justice campaigns and launched nonprofits. For the last four years, Jay expanded his areas of focus and has been helping businesses and private sector companies with growth-related issues, CRM implementation and crowdfunding campaigns.

Chris Blankenship – Executive Producer

Chris Blankenship studied broadcast production and music at the University of Colorado in the late 80’s and early 90’s and officially launched his career in southern China in 1992. He’s worked internationally on commercials, music videos, short and long films, as well as other creative projects. A consummate storyteller, he’s comfortable producing, editing and sometimes even directing. You’ve probably seen his commercial work on broadcast TV and his documentary work on PBS (and affiliates) and Hulu.

The Arguments For And Against Bernie Sanders Staying In The Race

FOR

  • Mathematical impossibility of receiving nomination only reinforces status as outsider candidate
  • More than halfway done cobbling together foreign policy plan
  • Would continue to push Clinton’s speeches to the left
  • Already booked nonrefundable Spirit Airlines ticket to visit Philadelphia during dates of Democratic National Convention
  • Probably our last chance to hear a public official say “single-payer health care” for a generation or two
  • “BEST Bernie Moments” YouTube compilation could use couple more minutes of material
  • Staying active and engaged in society has numerous health benefits for seniors
  • Nation can pretend it might actually do something about corporate influence on politics, becoming embroiled in imprudent wars, and income inequality for few more weeks

AGAINST

  • Staying in forces Clinton to waste time and energy learning to campaign against someone with clear principles and political stances
  • Having raised $207 million, dropping out would help get a lot of money out of politics
  • Learned that the president does not actually get to decide everyone’s income
  • Would finally have some time to jab fingers recreationally
  • Would allow Clinton to focus on fucking up general election campaign
  • Might be nice to relax and have a friendly chat with a banker from time to time
  • Pennsylvania Convention Center needs DNC itinerary set Friday by 5 so they can coordinate with vendors
  • Best to just squash Americans’ belief they can actually make a difference in the political system now before it gets too far out of hand
