Off-guardian reviews Charlie LeDuff and Chris Hedges books

And That’s The Way It Is
The Essential U.S. Journalism Books of 2018

I always yearn for well-spoken rhetoric that tells the truth about the awful place America has become. Some people could say I am just negative, but sugar-coating the horrific conditions that the majority of Americans live in today is not something I will do.

I found the quotes in this article inspiring for their willingness to speak truth to power. I had never heard of Charlie LeDuff before. I will now be looking for his work. Here is one quote. Vaguely Hunter Thompson-esque. I like it.

And so the media, the bicoastal honey babies, descended on Ferguson, Missouri, in the heart of Middle America. They were out of place here: primped, blown dry, ravenous, pushy, self-important. Mix that with a generous helping of white liberal do-gooders, white anarchists, black nationalists, international commentators, local bloggers, and the new class of do-it-yourself internet Hemingways and you had yourself a genuine, world-class goat fuck of discombobulation and vainglory…”

I don't have any commentary. I just think that c99p will find this article a cool drink of water in the desert of the corporate media.

He did a series for a Detroit station. Here's a good interview with Chris Hedges.

We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.

I can’t think of what to say. The article says it all. I, like you, had not heard of McDuff. I’m anxious to listen to the interview Azello posted.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

"The “jumpers” reminded us that one day we will all face only one choice and that is how we will die, not how we will live." Chris Hedges on 9/11

Doesn't this just sum up what is happening all over America?

He chronicled the deadly chaos in Detroit’s urban schools, speaking to students and staff as millions of tax dollars were diverted to subsidize a hockey stadium owned by billionaires.

After 8 years of No Hope and Change people were left with this:

“The glass was half empty in America. Less than half of American households were now considered middle class, and half the middle-class wealth had evaporated during the Great Recession. Rent was eating half their paychecks…Economic insecurity was the biggest issue in America…But the lives of struggling white people don’t make good TV. They don’t make good copy

.

people in power. Then there was a scandal, of course, and I haven't heard from him much anymore. I think he is back on the air with a radio show. I followed him in the Detroit News.
