Friday Night Photos
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 08/20/2021 - 5:01pm
Happy Friday everyone.
I'll be guest hosting for Janis while she is on break, or until someone else wants to take the reins. Also, Lookout asked about possibly making this a morning thread. I myself would like to keep it an evening thread but I would like to get everyone else's input before making any decision.

outstanding photo SP!
Beautiful photo SP! Awesome! What kind of tree is it? Is the yellow natural? Great image!
Thanks for hosting!

Thank you, dystopian.
The tree is a Manzanita tree. I don't know what the yellow stuff is, but it was growing on the wood.

manzanitas are one of my favorite woods
when living in the high desert, climbed up into the rocks to snatch a few
fallen branches. then would carve into curved figurines
gave them away at the flea market. a good source of inspiration
This is not my work, but a good representation of the twisting nature of the tree.
Cool wine rack.

Nature nerding is the
Nature nerding is the greatest 'where's waldo' game ever. Because it is real. I use the most obvious low-handing fruit to observe, birds, butterflies, and dragonflies primarily as my main motivation to get out, take a walk, and look around whilst trying to notice things. It is harder to see fish, or bats, for instance. But one can always see birds, and seasonally butterflies and dragonflies. Any local park is good. One with natural habitat is better, as is any sort of water source, pond, stream, lake, etc.
This is along the Sabinal River, these are big Bald Cypress Trees. We know except the few ancient monsters left and there, they are all grown since the 1860's when all the Cypress lining the rivers in the Edwards Plateau were cut down for shingles. For shingles. It is like cutting down Redwoods for jacuzzis and patio furniture to me.
Did you see in the pic above the little bump on the main right fork, just up from the 'Y'?
juvenile Black Vulture. They must have laid their egg in the crotch!
soon it will be a dillo scavenging beauty
king of the scavengers
Black Vultures do not have the highly developed sense of smell that Turkey Vulture does. They watch the TV's to find the food. Then they are more aggressive at the carcass driving the TV's away until they get their fill.
We had skies full of them until the major freeze in Feb whence seemingly most of the local birds which roosted in a big dead cypress in the river perished. The roost was about 150 birds. We only have a couple dozen since.
Hope all are well! Enjoying life is the best revenge on the bastards.

Hola Dysto, great pics, great tree and juvie blvu.

Thanks for hosting SP
Hopefully Janis is enjoying the break.
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Is that snow? Or maybe a curtain.
Whatever it is it's way cool looking. Nice textures and lighting

Wonderful and confusing, reminiscent of wind-carved
sandstone, but upon inspection clearly not. Maybe structural steel, as in shipping container, with overhanging snow?

Wow SP your shutter abilities are amazing
We have been discussing this as regards to open threads ripped asunder.
I think it is best to keep this as an evening thread. Janis needs a break,
so it is generous of you to step in. Thanks!
Mimi has volunteered to pick up one OT, though I think it matters not
were it to be TH/FR. We are searching for another one to pick up the void,
so to speak. Best to keep the photo journal as is for now, imo. We'lll chase
another poster from the woodworks, I hope.
What are the bugs that shake off their skins this time of year?
Not sure if it locust or cicada. But I made friends with one today.
Just lost its shell and was belly up on the ground. The ants were
getting to it, thought it was dead, but picked it up and put it on the deck.
While later it was moving it's forepaws, so I encouraged it to stay alive.
Was amazing how it felt my finger with it's leg. We discussed life, the universe
and everything. Kinda fun. Guess I'm a bug nut.
Thanks again.
cicada mostly now

Hi QMS. I think now is mostly cicada hatching or emergence, when they come out of the ground and climb up on something usually to 'break out. This is a good go to site for bugs:The clickable guide at upper left is a good way to start when you have no idea what you are looking for.

Thanks for your input
on when to post the thread, QMS.
Hope you and your bug had a great discussion.

Would we be talking FRI morning or SAT morning?
As of New Year's of this year, I resolved to take Saturdays off from Internet use, and I have basically kept to it, so I hope it wouldn't be the latter. That's my 2 kopeks.
In the Land of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man is declared mentally ill for describing colors.
Yes Virginia, there is a Global Banking Conspiracy!
We would be talking Fri morning.
Do you have a preference about moving the thread to the AM or leaving it in the PM?

FRI morning wouldn't hurt, actually
owlbat, so don't change too much just on my account. In the Land of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man is declared mentally ill for describing colors.
Yes Virginia, there is a Global Banking Conspiracy!
It's a beautiful world...

heh...
so, if you guys wanted to post in the morning on fridays so that more people can participate, when i get to c99 in the early afternoon, i can pin it to the top of the community page so that it doesn't disappear down the page by the time that most folks are used to participating.
or not. whatever you guys want to do is just fine with me.
Thanks for the feedback, Joe
Right now the consensus is to remain an evening thread.

okiedokie...
sounds great!
I'm just a spectator
....but to me, this space has a night ambience — like a gallery reception in Soho. But how the artists feel is far more important.
Friday is the slowest night of the week, and the photo group really picked it up.
Appreciate the input, Pluto
For now we will remain an evening thread.

Tonight's moon shot
Just snapped this lucky shot off the front deck a few minutes ago ...
At the same time out the back window I can hear the Friday Night Live band jamming down the street in The Plaza. Crowd sounds rowdy, right on. This moment feels surreal. The band is called Full Moonalice!

Here is this year's dirt patch after I yanked out the tomato plant and before I yanked the squash plant:

Cloverdale moves to mandatory 35% water use reduction

Here is a green lynx spider guarding her nest in the basil plant. She is an extraordinary bee killer (sad trumpet sound), it is a graveyard of honey bees and one yellow jacket hornet below.

I love you all so much it hurts. Cheers!
Good morning, eyo
Nice shot of the moon and the green lynx spider.
Unless the west gets a whole lot of rain soon we will all be dealing with water reductions. Hope you can get enough to keep your garden growing.

Thank you kind host
I can't even think about seeing the river like it is, half mile from my door. Donna who walks the path frequently said it is "ankle deep" a couple weeks ago. I have read mention the river could literally dry up and disappear in spots downstream before Lake Mendocino (upstream) fills again.
The state moved the last of our endangered Coho salmon from Lake Sonoma (downstream) hatchery (water too low too warm) down to a cool water hatchery in Petaluma. Good luck to all.

very cool Eyo!
LOVED that version of that song... THANKS, always a near dear favorite for me. How cool that they are doing that... outstanding.

It took a hundred shots to get that one
Last week a different garden spider in the bean tower bit my arm when I wasn't looking. I thought I banged it or poked it on something, when I got upstairs after picking it already made a little blood blister. After a couple days that turned in to the classic dark circle around the bite mark. I'm lucky it was no black widow, and i got a little spider venom in me.
I'm also lucky I didn't break any bones this year. Yay! knock wood
Peace and Love
Hola eyo. Your dirt patch has evolved an
amazing degree of structure and refinement with all the "architectural" elements. Great moon shot too. Too bad about the water rationing and smoke; is the smoke impacting your plants?

Lack of water more than smoke
Also thanks for being kind on my cardboard architectural design skills, I didn't have much else to work with so... yeah. LOL The sticks and hardware cloth are attempts at keeping the cats from digging up and crapping on everything. Did I mention the neighbors acquired two cats? Yeah, they did. The stories are piling up along with all the other crap. Lucky me! grin

Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Good morning Social. I'm late to the party as usual.
That is a fantastic picture, and one can actually get lost in it.
I guessed Madrone (Madroño) with lichen on the bark so I get 1/2 credit I think. Had I been timely I have a whole stack of Madrone pics for comparison, I'll see if I can find one to toss up there for said purpose all the same.

As a bystander and untimely spectator it really isn't my place to comment, but as a busybody I will anyway - I've had a sense, since I first discovered this "site feature", that it really is Janis' baby and she should make the call on any time and day changes.

Thank you Social for covering this space.
I think it’s a wonderful place for all who want to participate, and for spectators who just enjoy looking. If you continue to enjoy it maybe we can share it going forward.
I appreciate the support of all who feel that Friday evening is still a fitting time.
While joe’s and lookout's suggestion would solve the Friday morning void on the site, I’m not convinced it would increase participation of a photographic nature, and it would mean that I would not be able to participate directly, since 6:30am est is 11:30pm my time.
Thanks again all.
In my mind it is a Friday evening entry into the weekend
I always enjoyed it and the atmosphere is very friendly and calming. My vote: if you can keep it an evening thread, it would be mice.
