A Day in the Life

photo Pearl2_zpsre4sfqdt.jpgPearl Love is a Taiwanese transgender woman who lives in New York. So she rides the subway a lot.

Here's what recently happened last week, in her own words:

I am an outreach social worker for Trans Latina network and an Asian transgender individual. Today is 4.28.16 Thursday. I work in big event for the center - the 8th annual immigration fare & culture event. Between 4:30-4:45 pm. I was on 6 train from Bronx to the LGBT center to work , when I change 6 train to 4 express train in 125 st station an unknown woman sitting across me started to verbally abuse me. Make lot of shit comments about how much she hate Trans people and want me to suck her dick. She also made racist comments. I ignored her and kept reading my book. When the train got to 86 st she started getting so loud and crazy yelling at me so I started to record her on my phone cam- she start getting even louder and start assault me and hit me. As you can see it's definitely a hate crime. She attacked me inside the train . When I retreated she threw all my stuff on the floor and chased me around the train and say she is going to find a stick to hit me. It was a crowded train and everyone heard it but no one helped me. Guys acting like nothing happened. For 5 min. Then when the train stop on 42 st. She got out of train but keep yelling at me, I recorded 4 videos around 3.5 min. Thanks to an older guy who helped me pick my stuff up and put it back my bag, and said sorry to me. So now you can understand what's happening in my everyday life. That happens all the time. But it's my first time recording it.
....Well she has a lot to learn . She need education to how to respect, learn not to be discriminatory against the Trans Community . I am so sad for her children. Have that kind of mother to teach them to grow up to be bigoted assholes.

Pearl said she experiences harassment in public so frequently that at first she didn't find the assault out of the ordinary.

It happens all the time basically. I just walk away mostly, or I go to other room or other subway.

I didn't know that it was that serious until people told me, because I've gotten used to it.

Oh, it was just another woman.' I didn't know until people told me that it was not right, that it was assault because it's happened for so long.

This is the first time Pearl has recorded an incident of harassment.

That's just a really small thing that I face every day. I go to a job interview, they look at me like, 'You're never going to get a job. They never even waste your time asking anything about you when you look feminine.

I cannot go anywhere without the subway. What am I gonna do?

I go on the subway, I usually just don't look at anyone, I just sit and pretend I'm studying or whatever. I'm looking around or doing something so people think I'm busy so I don't get into trouble. When people look at me, I don't react.

That woman who attacked Pearl was hyper-aggressive, but the video helps others see what kind of harassment TG people go through. Good thing she video recorded that incident, it needs to be shown the kind of violence that is extended to Pearl and others like her, I have TG friends, and it is hard to watch the violence against someone like that, usually it is men who commit the violence, but it is needed to be shown that women can be just as violent to TG people.

Apparently I would frequently be arrested for assault, because that shit would not fly on my subway car.

Hooray for Pearl and her bravery. She's a hero for recording this and not letting people like that woman stop her from living her life.

enough to "blend in with the crowd" are beginning to see the bombs bursting around all us LGBT which for the longest time only we seemed to be aware of.

My straight friends would say "you're exaggerating", or "you're taking it too personally".

I have had two close friends killed because they were LGBT (late 80's in TN) and countless others, including myself, who have been beaten up, fired from jobs, or otherwise excluded from the rest of the world as being less than worthy citizens.

I credit the rise in the number of people carrying video cameras (aka phones). But that's not the only reason in the surge. It's brave people behind these cameras like Pearl Love who record the hateful spew and make sure other people see it.

Thank you for posting this.

The people, united, will never be defeated.

Having used the London Underground a lot in a past life, pretty much all you concentrate on is maintaining your personal space........... not wondering if someone else is this or that or whatever.

Let people live their lives for goodness sake!
