Censorship in the time of the worldwide web

This morning I discovered something amazing at The Willamette Weekly, a lefty alt free publication here in Portland. I was censored by WW for commenting on a white nationalist march for "free speech". There is irony all over the place in this one.

First off, if The Willamette Weekly could be considered anything, it would be progressive, not only politically but socially, too. Why would they block a relatively innocuous comment that said white nationalists protesting for freedom of speech is like committing mass murder for peace.

I did not get profane.

I did not write about how to make $75 an hour from home.

I merely pointed out the irony of white nationalists marching for free speech. I suggested it was much like President Trump's garbled speech, often heavy with adjectives and short on nouns and complete sentences.

Why would WW ban me (and it wasn't an attack on what I wrote, but on me) for essentially writing something that agrees with their editorial stances?

Well, it turns out that they have recently switched to using Disqus for their comment screening.

Who is Disqus? Apparently, they are offered for free, so it's unsurprising that small, independent publications or websites would be tempted to use their services. This is how Disqus, at its own website, describes its services: "Disqus helps digital publishers build strong audiences. If you publish content, our platform can increase reader engagement and give you the right tools to grow. Even better, it’s simple to install and free to use."

So why would Disqus ban a commenter who actually agrees with the editorial direction of the site?

I tried to find out something by going to their website. From the photos apparently happy young people who work at Disqus have remarkable career opportunities. Lots of smiling people. But how they determine who should and shouldn't be banned is a company secret.

From its wiki page Disqus was created by a couple of undergrads at UC Davis. Four years later they went for venture capital. "According to a study by Lijit, Disqus was used by 75% of websites in March 2011 who used a third-party commenting or discussion system."

This is what Disqus does:

Disqus Basic is a free, ads supported plan. It includes access to the core functionality of Disqus, including:

Engage comments plug-in
Advanced spam filtering
Moderation tools
Basic analytics
Configurable ads
Real-time discussions
Responsive web support
iOS and Windows apps
Photo and video support
Audience ownership
Google Perspective to combat toxic comments

There are some clues. Recently sites that use Disqus have been identifying me as "Bob In Pacifica" instead of Bob In Portland. In fact I used to call myself Bob in Pacifica when I lived there (a sleepy coastal town in California) before I moved north in 2011. Apparently, I'd been identified as a troublemaker by someone way back then.

Imagine if you were a venture capitalist sitting in a New York office, and you had the power to limit commentary by progressives or people framing their arguments by class issues. And you could limit these comments to 75% of all websites in the world.

You don't have to imagine it.

It would be interesting to find out some names at Disqus. With names you can find business and professional relationships. You may even see government connections. At the least it appears this is just another tool of the monied classes to control discussions of important issues. What appeared to be free isn't.

but I'm not banned at any of their other sites.
I created a new account and used a different email address and I'm still banned on the Hill.
Something has happened to it because the comments are just pie fights between certain users and they don't address the topic of the article, so no big loss.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

There never was as much free speech or flow of information in the so-called Free World as our ruling elites led us to think.

and while I'm not banned, I'm sanctioned in such a way that I can make a comment, but only I can read it. No one else can. I had my son log on to this site after I made a comment, and he said it wasn't there.
Explains why I got no up votes and no responses.
Pretty fucked up commenting to no one and you don't even know.

@earthling1 For everyone else, your contributions vanish, but since for you yourself they continue to appear you may not realize for a long time, if ever, that you’ve been banned.

I’m seeing more and more complaints about it, in all sorts of forums.

My understand is that one registers with Disqus (not with any one site). You can visit your own page on Disqus that presents a journal or compendium of all your activity on the Internet using Disqus. Disqus even has their own forums and groups. There is no doubt an algorithm that calculates your overall reputation.

At the same time, I do believe that sites that rent disqus forum software can select from some criteria of standards that they wish to use for moderation. It must vary a great deal. I have conversations at washingtonsblog.com that are rough, or Firedoglake at one point, or the Atlantic, for that matter — Disqus users, all.

Anyway, I have a particular interest in community management, so I looked it up. Here's how it works (if you're into that sort of thing):

WW has customized Disqus in an unforgiving way. It could be a rookie mistake, since auto-moderation software is new to them. I'd write them a letter requesting reinstatement and suggesting that they post their rules. Tell them I said they should hire you to manage the community.

My first thought when I saw this was, "Wow. I thought Portland would be the last place for this kind of over-reaction to humans."

to comment on the press. It is apparently going to be a one-way transaction; i.e.,pure unalloyed propaganda. It don't matter what you say or how you say it, just STFU and let us tell you how to think.

The local rag, pressdemocrat.com (use to refer to them as The Press Republican) was infected by that community censorship software a few years ago. It is horrible, full of right wing trolls that reflect a tiny portion of the citizenry, this is Sonoma County. BIG identity crisis problems, but not very right wing in total. It became such a racist sewer they finally started removing ability to comment from every immigration article. Disgusting. Now, you have to log in to get your marching orders I guess. Thankfully, I no longer have to block discus and their cdn crap. The thing is huge, and quite damaging to communities. Don't use it, that's what I say. Don't support Stasi-like censorship, please. Even if it seems "okay" where you are, it is not okay everywhere. Quite the opposite.

Thanks

or "left" anything. They've moved further and further right and now represent business interests in Portland. There's a nostalgic myth that weeklies are all left-leaning, a la the Village Voice. I haven't read the Voice in a long time. Maybe that's moved right, too. Can't say.

But the Willamette Week typically supports the most right-wing candidates. In Portland, which is so heavily Democratic, that means they support the Democrat who used to be a Republican but switched parties. They specialize in hit pieces against the leading lefties in the week or two before an election.

Furthermore, their music listings are horrible. They're not providing a service, they're collecting rent. Compare to the Mercury, which has all kinds of clubs listed and which gave my band quite the great review a week or so ago....while the #$%&*^( Willamette Week didn't even mention it! #%$^%* 'em!!!
