Growing hope

open thread_112.jpg

More corn and carrots in the ground yesterday.Tomato starts are 10" tall and are sufficiently hardened to plant today as I host this OT. Got a tip to plant tomatoes really deep, even burying some of the lower branches, to get a better result. Worked out well last season.
I've got 24 starts at differing stages of growth and will experiment with a staggered harvest, hopefully.
We are still thawing and eating green beans, carrots, and tomato marinades/stews from last years harvest.
A great side benefit from all this is my son has ripped up a patch of his back yard and bending my ear for advice.
He senses winds of change too, and is learning some different skills.
All over my neighborhood planterboxes are appearing in front yards to capture maximum sun.
It really is something to behold.
Americans are losing faith in the system.
I just hope they go organic before they poison their soils with chemical fertilizers.
It takes years to bring that ground back to life.
The thread is open.
What's on your mind?

Golden nuggets. Feels like digging for gold when we harvest in October.

We've already set tomatoes (we plant deeply too). We are almost at the end of lettuce season...it gets bitter when it gets hot.

Happy gardening to all, and thanks for the OT!

planted and some overwintered carrots and chard (2 or 3 kinds). My wife still has some places to plant, but my raised bed has to be dug out and critter proofed before we can use it again and we've got an excessively busy schedule here including house guests and road trips in addition to all our usual to-dos and my medical appts. We also need to get a new planting schedule, they changed our zone because climate

tha I've lived here in the PNW I have watched wineries open up in first Oregon, and now in Washington state.
I don't know what is happening with California wineries but I have driven by a couple that were burned out and closed down.
California is having some serious shortages of water.

I had a busy morning, just now taking a break to read and respond.
We are having tacos for dinner. We will be topping them with chopped tomatoes from our garden.
I had not heard of the Deep Plant technique. Interesting!
Also interesting that your community is thinking of one of the most basic survival skills known to man. Good prepping.
PSA: it is not helpful during an intense custody court battle to raise and sell marijuana from your home where your child resides with you. Ignore this helpful hint if pot is legal in your state.
Have a great evening, e1, and thanks for the OT.

was the branches you bury morph into roots and the depth puts roots well down in the soil, where the water is.
Did not pull up and check to see if this was true, but I may do this with a couple of test plants.
Nothing wrong with experimenting a little.
I did test the "tighty-whitey" method of soil testing. It works!
For those who are curious; You take a pair of all cotton underwear and bury them under an inch or two of soil in your garden and wait 90 days. When you uncover them there should be nothing left but the elastic waistband.
This means your soil is alive and thriving with organisms.
I have a photo of a pair with just the elastic and the double seams just hanging limply. I try to post it. Posting photos on my dumbphone is a hit or miss endeavor.
I don't find it morally legal to raise or sell pot with children in the house even in legal states like Oregon and Washington. It's kind of a duh! decision.
Thanks for dropping by.

@earthling1 This stupid Mom is in a neighborhood that is just south and just east of developments overrun with the cartel and gangs. When turf wars occurs, so do murders, and that is everyone in the family.
We were granted an emergency hearing set 5 days after the request for a hearing was made. The presiding judge was a defense attorney. He knows how dangerous drug dealing is.

We do not really have a long enough season to grow them outside, successfully, so we plant them in pots. The final pots are 8 inches tall, and the peppers and toms are usually about 16 inches tall when we plant them. We put the plants at the bottom of the pot and fill the pot with dirt, basically burying half, or more, of the plant. We don't bother removing leaves or whatever, we just let those stay so that the plant can make roots from them. And the plants do! Ohh yea, we don't use potting soil, we use the soil from our own compost heap. So it's really rich. We do feed a month or two after planting.

Anyway, our toms and peppers are about 12 inches tall now. Many of them have flowers! We will be putting them into the 8 inch pots soon (they are in 4 inch pots right now). Then it's a long, long season of harvest as they grow in the greenhouse or hoop house. We get toms until October, and peppers for almost that long. Have a great season, it sounds like you are doing awesome!
