Generating dissent

open thread_108.jpg

Like many here, I'm a baby boomer. No apologies or complaints. If I had my choice, I wouldn't change a thing.
Except the political landscape, and we did that back in the 60s through mass protests, sit-ins, occupations, and even love-ins.
Yeah those were fun.
I tasted blood in my mouth, tear gas in my eyes, and the sting of water cannons.
But we stopped a very unpopular war.
Many said we didn't accomplish anything.
The war was winding down and the Vietcong were near collapse. The escalations in troops was to make it end sooner. A rerun of "The Atomic bombing of Japan would end the war sooner".
Then TET happened and the war dragged on.
Stop me if you've heard this all before.
The one thing I want to note is we baby boomers were awake and engaged in what was going on in our country and across the world.
The current generations, Millennials and Gen Z) are starting to spread their wings, so to speak, and register their dis-satisfaction with current events and organizing protests and camp-ins on college campuses nationwide and meeting the same treatment we got back in the 60s.
Much like Gen X had their time with Occupy Wall Street, authorities are trying to bust them up as quickly as possible and keep the movement from gaining traction.
The MSM are doing exactly as they are told, just like back in the 60s. Demonize and portray the protesters as un-American dissidents.
A local MSM affiliate sent a pretty young bubble headed bleached blond reporter out to Portland State to interview some activists and complained that she was assaulted with insults and epitaphs and retreated to the newsroom.
Oh the horror!
Not sure how these two Gens are gonna faire, but Gen X should take some time out of their busy work schedule and spend some time marching along with them.
This boomer is coming out of retirement to do the same. And I hope to see a rep from the Silent Generation there too.
The Dirty Fucking Hippies were right.
Thread is open.

Notice it's called "anti Israel protests" in the press, not anti war, or anti genocide. Our colonial masters in Israel must be pleased.

@Snode

to see the power of word choice in creating a certain mood in the reader/listener, isn't it?

For example. which would you rather have: a nice, thick juicy steak; or a segment of muscle tissue dissected from the carcass of an immature, castrated bull?

"Anti-Israel", indeed. Might as well just go all the way and say "Pro-Push all the Jews into the sea". Why mince words? If you are going to lie, go all the way.

The presstitutes are really starting to get on my nerves, with their unceasing efforts to create and report only news supporting the apparently-official narrative.

Signed: another superannuated dirty eff'n hippie...

On edit: my current band is rehearsing up for a one-off gig in June, and last night we pulled in Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World". I was kicking time and singing backup vocals, and thought to myself for the thousandth time "Everything old is new again". There's a reason that Neil's solo sounds like an icepick in your ear...

that Bibi is demanding US government crack down hard on campus dissent while various congresscritters imply foreign governments are behind protests, including Hamas, Houthis, and Hisbulla.
Is not Israel a foreign country?
The cognitive dissonance is simply astounding.

Israel is not an American state
therefore have no rights to dictate
US policy. Even Idaho has no say in
international matters. And they are a state
of the US, so how is Israel more important
than states to consider foreign policy?
Does congress no longer
consider citizens worthy of opinion?
This could be trouble.

the tide is turning in disfavor of Israel as a nation.
They could have had a good thing going forward, but they blew it, big time.
This is opinion of 75 years of personal witness.
Pointing out hubris, arrogance, and stupidity is not hate speech.
It is instruction on what not to do.

As ever, "they" are abusing language and weaponizing it and we have to take it back.
For example, they contend that some specific types or categories of speech should not be allowed in certain conditions and point to some specific cases, then they say something like hate speech should not be allowed uncer certain conditions, and then define things like "Israel should stop bombing babies" to be hate speech.

The thing is that we need to attack all legs of that. Firstly, there shall be no prior restraint on speech; second hate speech doesn't exist, it is an undefinable and undefined rhetorical construct that is totally subjective; third, the example given is not hate speech under any acceptable definition or construction of the term.

This approach needs to be taken with respect to all of their linguistic game playing by as many people with rspect to each and every instance at every opportunity. Otherwise, by controlling the narrative, they control perceived reality,

A rainy AM has now cleared.

The Zionist are hiring agitators to infiltrate the protest and holler antisemitic claptrap in order to smear the protests. Sounds about right.

TPTB are in panic as they lose the narrative. One reason to shut down TikTok.

I'm proud of the college kids standing up to genocide and calling out the warmongers. More power to them! One difference between our generation and theirs is we had the draft hanging over us motivating our action. Their action is not self motivating but altruistic. Even more reasons to be proud of them.

Thanks for the OT!

afraid of being drafted as I was angry that I was still considered a child, even at 18 years old.
I couldn't vote, nor could I sign any contract, or drink alcohol.
I was a minor in all ways until 21.
We were sending children to war, in violation of the Geneva Accords.
I also wanted to bring my only brother home from the jungles of Vietnam.

When the Zionist (pseudo leader of the free world) arrives giving his blessings to the war criminal we get this.

https://www.barrons.com/news/blinken-arrives-in-israel-to-push-for-gaza-...

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Israel on Tuesday to push for a much awaited ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza.

Blinken, who is on regional tour, demanded earlier in Amman that Hamas accept a proposal for a ceasefire and release hostages it holds in the Palestinian territory since the war broke out on October 7.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/israel-s-netanyahu-says-any-icc-arrest-warr...

JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that if the International Criminal Court issues arrest warrants for government officials on charges related to the conduct of Israel's war(opens in a new tab) against Hamas it would be a scandal on a historic scale.

Israeli officials have expressed concern in recent days that the ICC is preparing warrants for senior government officials, in what would be the most serious international legal action taken against Israel since the Gaza war erupted in October.

The ICC - which can charge individuals with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide - is investigating Hamas' Oct. 7 cross-border attack and Israel's devastating military assault on Hamas-ruled Gaza, now in its seventh month.

"The possibility that they will issue arrest warrants for war crimes against IDF (Israel Defence Force) commanders and state leaders, this possibility is a scandal on a historic scale," Netanyahu said in a video statement.

https://www.barrons.com/news/hamas-says-readying-response-to-gaza-truce-...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Tuesday to launch a ground offensive on the Gaza Strip's far-southern city of Rafah "with or without" a truce deal being agreed with Hamas.

The hawkish premier issued the warning despite strong concerns raised by top ally Washington and hours before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was set to arrive in Israel on his latest Middle East crisis tour.

Netanyahu, who has vowed to destroy Hamas over its October 7 attack, promised "total victory" and said stopping the war "before achieving all of its goals is out of the question".

"We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate the Hamas battalions there with or without a deal," he told families of some of the hostages still being held in Gaza, his office said.

that Netanyahu has no intention whatsoever of negotiating with Hamas, Biden, or anybody else.
Also proving that Biden is as impotent as a corpse.
Blinken only spreads that stench everywhere he goes.
World leaders know the American people are leaderless and helpless as soon as Blinken walks into the room.

I came in barely under the wire as a Silent.

By the time of the protests in '68 I had been rooming with a couple of others who were in my intern class for an Army civilian position. We had signed a contract that required us to work for 2 years and if we dropped out or flunked out of the program we would have to pay back the cost. None of us had much money, we had made it thru college using scholarships and loans. We had taken our oaths the previous year.

One of the roomies left that year, enlisted in the AF and was shoved really fast thru his basic and then installed in an AF computer center. Wow were they thrilled that they got graduate level expertise for a song. The other roomie managed to score a position in the IN Nat'l Guard and did his 6 months.

I managed to luck out because I was pretty hot stuff in those days and had some brass pushing to keep me. But all thru my career, both in DoD and then in the private sector I made sure that my primary focus was in support of people who really needed support, the wife and child of the soldier, the clerk who worked to make sure that the soldier was relieved of some worry about them while he was away and then got his pay if some of him didn't come back.

I took my oath seriously and knew it didn't have an expiration date. There's a whole bunch of us who hate the PMC/MBA crowd and what they have done to our country. I fought them in conference rooms.

Please be well.

Addendum: TSHT really hit the fan during the raygun years when the funding authority changed to those who were anointed into the "Executive Service" job classification. Got really nasty then. I managed to keep on for a while longer and then went out on a gurney. Good news for the PMC crowd, they hated me enough to give me a get the hell out incentive. Others who had gone along to get along didn't fare as well.

I'm proud of what I did and I know the only thing keeping this place going are those who care more about passion and pride.
