Water Protector Run Over by a Snowmobile

Most of the world thinks that everything ended in Standing Rock when the Army Corps of Engineers denied the permit for the pipeline to be put under Lake Oahe. The Reality is, the fire has been turned down to simmer, but there have been numerous smaller actions since then. The DAPL people, and the cops, have not left...so neither have the water protectors.

There are daily Prayer Walks, where people from the camps (there are still three camps, each with several hundred people) head out onto the Cannonball and the Missouri Rivers, to pray for the stopping of the pipeline. For a while, the Sacred Stone Camp had a "prayer stump"...a site where they were on the Cannonball, where they have every right to be, and where they would pray daily. They had a flag there, on a post...a prayer flag. A couple of nights ago, the police came out in the middle of the night and stole the flag. (The stump apparently disappeared a few nights earlier.) Sacred Stone Camp replaced it the next day with two flags, and filmed the tire tracks showing evidence of snowmobiles and a Humvee coming from the drill pad area and returning. This is a small video on FB showing the tracks, as well as the general area: https://www.facebook.com/tawasi/videos/10212016033538215/

Yesterday was a national day of action, against several pipelines, in conjunction with Martin Luther King Day, in solidarity with oppressed people everywhere. There was a much larger group than recently, on the Missouri River side of the drill pad area, outside the concertina wire. As near as I can tell, one man defied the concertina wire, and stepped across it, and stood. Praying. With no weapons. He was met by a phalanx of National Guard troops in riot gear (to protect themselves from a man standing. And praying. With no weapons.) Behind them, a ND cop with a rifle found the very best place to shoot from, combining protection from the praying man with a range that complemented his level of marksmanship and manliness. Ten feet or so. Once he found a position he was comfortable with (it took a few minutes...no hurry after all, his victim was just standing there, praying,) he shot the man in the forehead, just above the right eye. While he was standing. Praying. With no weapons. There is video...I just can't find it again. Searching on Facebook... ugh. Anyway, here are a collection of stills: https://www.facebook.com/wicohan.lakol.7/posts/118038098704306?pnref=story

Meanwhile, over at the "Backwater Bridge" (which was recently tested, core sampled, and certified to be safe for vehicular travel...but is still roadblocked. A State Highway; public access to Bismarck shopping, food, hospital, etc. Closed for DAPL convenience. Closed, as an economic sanction against the Standing Rock Tribe.) ...Where was I? Oh yeah; meanwhile, at the bridge, there was a larger group gathered to pray, and met with all the things you would expect to meet a prayer group (with no weapons); tear gas, rifles, "non-lethal" weapons, armored cars, giant floodlights, LRADs, etc. https://www.facebook.com/chrisjohn12205/videos/10210373647849887/

And then, somewhere...I have no information as to which site, a cop ran over a water protector with a snowmobile. I had an image, but apparently I can't post images any more. Here is the text from the image:

This is not a rumor: one of our water protectors was hit by a cop on a snowmobile ...hard. Medics couldn't reach her. Police called an ambulance, and it appears that she has been transported off site. PLEASE, PLEASE pray for this young woman. --Linda Black Elk, Indigenous healer, herbalist, and activist

(just like her great-great grandfather, probably)

Well, there is no one that I am comfortable praying to, in the traditional sense. So I bring it to you, good people. Who would have thought that someone would just run over a person like that...a cop, no less? http://www.legis.nd.gov/assembly/65-2017/documents/17-0351-01000.pdf

This is what happens when an overpowered and trigger-happy Establishment faces off against people who won't fight back. Their innate sadistic bully comes to the fore, and Bad Things Happen.

and provide some coverage. Democracy Now and TYT politics were the only news outlets with regular posts. Some media source other than just facebook posts is needed.

We are to the point where we must become the journalists! We need to keep this out front where people see it. Talked with some folks this weekend who never even heard of Standing Rock and DAPL.

Thanks for the essay Bisbonian!

@Lookout Yes, "we must become the journalists". I'm working on it.

It's time-consuming to wade through the unedited videos, since many are quite long. But to me, watching and listening to what's actually happening is the best journalism we can do -- and then amplify the voices of the folks on the frontlines, like we're all doing here.

@Bisbonian This is exactly why police should be held to the same culpability standards as everyone else regarding criminal behavior. This guy should be arrested.

@dervish Actually, the police should be held to a higher standard, since they are given a position of trust, with certain privileges that the general public do not have.

... Actually, the police should be held to a higher standard, since they are given a position of trust, with certain privileges that the general public do not have.

And the same goes for the corrupt government officials who've been at best enabling this bullying and even murderous behaviour among police forces all along and are, in that area, 'legalizing' it with unconstitutional law.

In all such cases they have (at the least, having also broken law) disqualified themselves from public service, having forsworn their oaths of office in betraying the people they serve, who delegate powers to the positions they hold in order that the public interest be served and the Constitutional rights of all be upheld.

Rachel Corrie

I should at least mention that I am also discovering a degree of strength and of basic ability for humans to remain human in the direst of circumstances – which I also haven’t seen before. I think the word is dignity. I wish you could meet these people. Maybe, hopefully, someday you will.
– Rachel Corrie, in an email to her mother, February 28 2003

She was a 23-year-old American peace activist from Olympia, Washington, who was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer on 16 March 2003, while undertaking nonviolent direct action to protect the home of a Palestinian family from demolition.

Did I see this here or elsewhere? Seems related.

ND bill aimed at protests would limit penalties for drivers who hit road-blocking pedestrians

http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/4200270-nd-bill-aimed-protests-woul...

Sorry, no experience here with inserting links or blockquotes.

"One of a pair of bills North Dakota lawmakers have drafted in response to the ongoing protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline would help prevent lawsuits and criminal charges against pedestrians who are blocking traffic on a public road.

House Bill 1203, whose prime sponsor is Rep. Keith Kempenich, R-Bowman, would eliminate a driver’s liability for damages if he or she negligently injures or kills someone who is “obstructing vehicular traffic on a public road, street, or highway.” Injuring or killing a road-obstructing pedestrian would also be free from criminal penalty if the driver struck the person unintentionally."

this group 'Water Protectors United - NoDAPL' and a lot of other water protector, Native American groups. Standing Rock may not get any coverage by the true 'fake news' but by following these fb groups I get links to alternative news sources like this article from Common Dreams this morning.

Water Protectors Arrested, Tear-Gassed for Peaceful Prayer Walk at DAPL Site
'All eyes on Standing Rock as once again indigenous water protectors are being shot, gassed & assaulted in defense of capitalism.'

Thanks for covering this bibsonian. I'm much more interested in reading about people's resistance to the corporate state then reading about the God awful pols and their internecine power squabbles. The fake news is full of Russian's, bizarre sexism and the sagas of spooks agencies vying against each other all set against a backdrop of austerity, destruction and death for humans and the planet. We all need to resist outside the pens provided or their fake partisan marches. I'm not religious but I do pray to the Great Spirit as it is a needed spirit that humans should all start respecting and protecting.

I found video on some of the things you're asking about. Here's the link to the essay I just posted. http://caucus99percent.com/content/standing-rock-cops-and-nd-legislature...

I duplicated some of what you included here, because I wrote before I read.

Have you had a chance to look at the footage of the new military equipment up on the hill? There's vid and a link in my essay. I'd be curious if you agree about the identification of it as surface-to-air missile launcher of some kind.

Bisbonian's picture

@blazinAZ It's called an AN/TWQ-1 "Avenger". I guess it would be used to avenge dangerous prayers hurled in its direction. It fires "Stinger" missiles, suitable for shooting down helicopters and small aircraft. Someone said it would knock down drones, but I am pretty sure that drones would be too small for it to "see". Someone ought to try an experiment, and launch about a dozen cheap, basic drones in it's general direction, all at once, and see how it does. (Those missiles are probably a lot more expensive than some cheap drones.)
