Vote Shaming

I don't have to explain to anyone here about the various versions of intimidation this season trying to beat progressives and other (let's call us) 'skeptical' liberals into voting for Clinton over our objections. "TRUMP!" is bullhorned into our ears, and now, in addition to all the racism and and various other-izing, now we have to listen to an assortment of sexual vulgarities.

I believe the majority of us on this site are in agreement on this: what Trump represents -and who he is- is an extremely dangerous abomination. He must not be handed the keys to the country.

But those of us who supported Bernie worked for a candidate who handily beat Trump in every poll published (Bernie also beat any of the other Republicans who hung on until late in their primary race). If the point were really to keep Trump from being elected, then Bernie as nominee was the way to ensure that result. You still want Trump to not win? Talk to me about putting Bernie on the ballot. As far as I'm concerned, I gave at the office: I have already done my part to keep Trump from putting his name in gilded letters on the front of the White House. I'll be glad to drop what I'm doing and re-take up that level of effort should Bernie be swapped in on the ballots (and yes, I do have a very clear sense of the impracticalities of doing just that... I'm just sayin').

'Where else are we going to go?' they ask. Voting for Jill is pointless, they say - the only way to combat Trump is to stand in front of the on-coming train, vote for Clinton and let it run us over. Voting for Jill is an expression of privilege, they claim, in an effort to rub salt in the opened sores of shame they are attempting to inflict.

For myself, I cannot own what is to come in a second Clinton Administration as I would by being intimidated into giving her my vote. I will not absolve her of the lying and cheating and stealing we saw in the primary and is likely continuing out of sight (thank you, Wikileaks, for bringing so much we guessed about to light).

Some of the folks who have been most vociferous about pressuring progressives to be brought to heel are those who supported Bernie in the primary and have internalized the guilt slung in their direction by those applying whatever pressure they think will work (thank you, Corrupt the Record, for your assiduous 'research' into what will sway the most stubborn holdouts).

It will be our fault, we are told, if Trump ascends the presidency. (No, I supported the candidate who clearly beats Trump in a match-up, it's the fault of those who over-ran the Sanders candidacy to run a candidate whose unfavorability is nearly equal to Trump's.) How will we feel if a potential mini-Hitler is sworn-in?

For me, the only appropriate response to attempts to shame us for our resistance is to ask those who have abandoned ship by jumping into the Clinton sea how will they feel if the following things come to pass under a Clinton presidency, things they will have condoned by casting their vote for her:

How will they feel if the U.S. begins its next war in the first 100 days?

How will they feel if/when Social Security is privatized?

How will they feel when TPP goes into effect?

How will they feel as climate change accelerates as we continue to fail to address it adequately?

How will they feel when Obamacare finally fails (since it's missing the only thing which would have kept it afloat, the public option)?

How will they feel when Clinton invites the R's more formally to limit late-term abortion?

.

One of hallmarks of the Bill Clinton presidency is that he was able to put societal restrictions in place which conservatives only salivated about.

The level of self-dealing/self-justification and (to my mind) sociopathy is so deep for Hillary that she fought tooth and nail to keep from cancelling a paying gig for Bill just days after she was to announce her run for the presidency - she apparently didn't want that morsel of cash to be withheld from her. (I had seen another version of this story earlier, but this is a similar one. Clinton, apparently, was loathe to lose the speaking fee by canceling. Podesta emails, "I recognize the sacrifice and dissapointment (sic) that cancelling will create, but it's a very consequential unforced error and could plague us in stories for months." link

Feel free to help shape the HOW WILL THEY FEEL list below.

in rationalization/justification as they have done all along. That majority will stick to their stupidity. They have no choice. Too much ego involved. Does a life long evangelical ever admit after some kind of epiphany that there is no such thing as a virgin birth or resurrections? Most likely they would implode.

Those who aren't so stupid? What can one do? Hope that they learn?

However, when all the things that you speak of come to pass, and they will, I'll be over spreading shit at TOP like nobody's business. That is, if it still exists.

There was a letter in the local rag a while ago (Minneapolis StarTribune), guilting and shaming Bernie/Stein voters about the disunity surrounding the '68 election; Johnson, Humphrey, McCarthy, Vietnam, etc., etc., the result being Nixon, and I'm thinking 'we've already got Nixon, her name is Clinton'.

Here in a very blue part of a very blue state, I've seen one Clinton/Kaine 1984* lawn sign.

Can I just say thanks to JtC, Joe and the rest for this site. It's keeping me sane.

As I believe it's still illegal to throw molotov cocktails, and wouldn't know how to make one, planning on voting for Trump. With RAGE. The rage is what's left of the energy I expended to support Jane and Bernie Sanders.

Don't know why so many seem to be listening to the BS Trump spouts, it's an act, think he's much less dangerous than the Klintons. Hope the strategy many I know are following will bust up the Republicans, take the Democratic party out of the Klutches of the Klintons and the DLC. Maybe some of Klinton sycophants will lose their places, power, and try getting a real job.

For just one thing, Nixon had a Democratic Congress and it was not all New Democrats. For another, Eisenhower/Nixon were very mindful of what the New Deal and Fair Deal had done for Democrats all up and down the ticket--and what that had done to their party. As the first Republican administration in 20 years, they knew they'd kill their party if they tried returning to Hooverism.

Hillary will be able to join forces with Republicans--if they let her--because she is one. And they will probably let her because Trump has thrown their party on the shoals. They have to proceed gingerly now.

From the link below:

"EU parliamentarians have voted in favor of bolstering institutional capacities to counter "Kremlin-inspired propaganda." But Russian media representatives criticized the move as an attack on freedom of speech.

http://www.dw.com/en/divide-europe-european-lawmakers-warn-of-russian-pr...

Basically the EU parliamentarians have voted to counter "Russian propaganda". From reading other sources, not clear who this will be done. But looks like proposals seem to the table to not let Russian media use any satellite feeds, and a mass blockage of Russian websites. The justification is that the Russians are undermining Western values, which now apparently don't include freedom of speech.

This will be unprecedented, but also establish a precedent for "Western democracies" to squash any web presence they don't like, and use the excuse it was disseminating Russian propaganda. In Europe EU leaders are blaming a good number of social ills in their countries on Russian "weaponizing" the social problem or causing it. For example, Russians are being blamed for the refugee crisis. The Poles accused Putin of sponsoring the ISIS inspired terror attacks in France. You name it.

And it has just started here in the United States. Hillary has accused Putin of sponsoring anti-fracking groups. NYTimes reporters have made accusations that the anti-TPP movement was started up and pushed by Putin (this was not by anti-Russian opinion columnists but by "reporters").

Let us say that that some shooting air war between the US and Russia happens in Syria. Anti-war groups rise up and use social media and internet sites for organizing. Hillary looks to the EU and says she will follow their lead and have the NSA close down American anti-war sites because they are being funded by Putin. No proof needed of course--the accusation is enough. I can easily see this site going down due to the general anti-war sentiment and then some accusation that gjohnsit is being paid directly by Putin. If bobswern posts here again, the site is certainly a goner.

I had the audacity to suggest Over There today that demonizing Putin might not be a good strategy and immediately had five - 5! - negative comments in response. Considering that my positive comments usually have about 2 recs, that's a lot of people waiting to pounce! And I was trying to post a helpful comment. Not sufficiently Clinton worshipful, apparently.

I don't know, I still think the majority are more paid to support her than genuinely support her. But if only the TOPs of the world exist any more, and those who would speak up get banned, that would make their jobs of censorship easier.

It is amazing five negative comments on what is basically an objective non-partisan comment?!? I decided to leave TOP in commenting on diary that said Trump will go nuclear that there were neocons in both the Pentagon and State who were talking as if we could win a nuclear war. I really don't understand the rating system there, but apparently my comment which was like two sentences was rated as inappropriate.

But your post made me realize something. The Clinton administration would not have to come down and say take this site off the interne tusing the FBI or NSA.. Rather, they could go the Wikileaks route and say put pressure on VISA, etc not to accept donations. Or pressure the internet hosting company to cancel c99's contract to use servers, etrc.

A discussion of issues used to be what they were about. Kos has said anything that tears down Clinton is forbidden, but anything that could make her a better candidate is fine (and presumably he will say after the election that anything that could make her a better President is fine). Of course to make someone better, you have to criticize them constructively.

But the Hillbots automatically flag anything the least bit critical, which can range from constructive criticism to tearing her down. Then the automatic actual robots warn, time out, or ban on the basis of flags. I think they're ruining that site, but Kos is letting them.

Anyway, given that you violated no actual written site rules (assuming you kept it to the neocons and didn't diss Hill), if you were banned, you could take it to Moderation at the Help Desk and ask to be reinstated. If you were less than banned, I would shrug it off, save the fight for a future comment if one does inappropriately get you banned.

Of course what Kos writes as the site rules and what he decides to do in the future may be two different things, but challenges will force him to come out with definitive statements. Here's his latest statement (DKos link): http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/08/15/1560484/-The-new-updated-and-im...

They violated it in my case and it sounds like they probably did in yours. So what happens in the comments is no longer the official rating system, but Hillbots being Hillbots. If you want to challenge it, you can refer to anything Kos said in the above link to do so. Be sure to post it in Moderation, a private thread at the Help Desk. They hate it when people try to stir up controversy publicly at the Help Desk.

Of course, you may not worry about it because you've decided not to go there any more at all, which of course is fine. Just know you have options. In my case, to be there for apolitical issues and community stuff, I mostly don't post in political threads or try hard to post only innocuous comments (which apparently means not even the friendliest of Clinton criticism!).

Anyway, the neocons who think a nuclear war is winnable would make an interesting and important post, if you have time to flesh it out into a diary with appropriate references, posted here. I would be interested in reading that. If She wins the election, it might even be important to start a group here - "War and Rumors of War" or something - to post about the latest war propaganda (if She is really going to do this, there will undoubtedly be plentiful propaganda first) and how best to refute it, keeping those essays together in one spot to be easily accessed. Even if we aren't part of electing her, we will have to be part of trying to hold her feet to the first, I think.

Ugh, what a prospect. Here's hoping Jill's support comes out in force on election day!

Mom and stepdad. We're all in Texas. They own the land I live on, and there's a Trump sign at the end of my dirt road where it meets the highway.

It'll be okay, riverlover. Just stay calm and take it easy! We need you around here.

Wanna hear something funny about my mom and her support for Trump? I might have posted about it already, but here:

Back when Pokemon Go first came out, Mom had her teenage helper place the following on both sides of the lighted sign at the end of my road:

TRUMP THE BITCH.

I was so embarrassed that I talked my teen son into changing it. We brainstormed about what we could say with the existing letters. I advised he'd have to do it after dark and hide from passing cars. The next morning I noticed it said something I certainly hadn't come up with:

HUMP THE BUTT
(the other side just said BITCH)

Biggrin

She still doesn't know who did it. I blamed it on roaming Pokemon Go players. She took it down, and only recently replaced it with simply, TRUMP.

Hang in there, and take care of yourself. We'll get through this!

Alright, You've convinced me voting for Jill Stein is a waste of a vote...
So instead I'll vote for the least dangerous candidate Donald Trump, and that will not just be a vote that Hillary doesn't get, but one for her most viable opponent as well...

It's almost like voting twice, rather than a vote on principle alone...

It's also a nice kiss my ass to end the conversation...

Bill's that is.

I will never forget hearing Ms. Rodham go after Bill's accusers. I was young at the time, a new mom... and I felt that if Hillary was a symbol of feminism... well then fuck that noise and I always said I was a Humanist, NOT a Feminist. Took me years to find out that that she was just a tool against women and that me and many others like me are the movement.

We are the movement. She's a stool.

Know what though? It's been so "great" hearing my daughter tell all about the hypocrisy of Clinton. Do NOT stand near if anyone swooshes the notion that Hillary is pro-woman. You will get a mouthful about how Clinton treated rape survivors.

We don't vote for Rapepublicans in this house. Not ever. Not even ones who lie and say they are Dems.

Well, I am not allowed to vote, but I wonder why you, who are all going to vote, don't do the opposite, go to the polling stations, take a huge sign with you, saying "Shame on you, if you vote for any of the two".

If every polling station had a good crowd to show up to shame voters into voting for dangerous and unelectable candidates, may be it had an effect. But heh, what do I know. I wouldn't vote, if you paid me to.

in most jurisdictions.

What is “electioneering”? Visible signs, buttons, clothing, etc. and passing out literature with talking points for or against.

When I was a kid in Hawaii when it was still a “territory” (colony) instead of a state, there was one exception though. It was allowed to stand outside the polling place passing out small “voting cards” with candidates’ names, photos, and the office they were running for.

I assume the cards were intended to help voters with literacy or memory limitations. It wasn’t like holding a sign because you couldn’t see who was on the card until and unless you took one.

to post or place any political fliers in any of the "public" places that are supposedly "places for the people". It's even a co-op run community, people-goverened so to speak. There are co-op run cafes, space makers places, movie theaters and community centers, gasoline stations etc. Just you can't speak and gather freely there as a group.

You would think it should be allowed for a group of people to gather there and have a meeting that is related to the support of a candidate or a political association, party or something. Nope. Verboten.

When my former husband grew up, his country was still a french colony. Til today after their "independence" they live under the rule of a "democratic system", which produces nothing but life-long political leaders puppets of the former colonial and empirial powers of Europe and the US and international corporations, including international organizations like the IMF and WB etc. All corrupted to the core. Democracy - like a scam theater run by con artists, enforced at gun point. But it's fine entertainment, you better like it or else...

How long do you give this site to survive? I have a sinking feeling that it will be drowned or dissolve itself out of fear.
What a huge, huge shame. This country got me. I am scared and can't think clearly anymore. If there is mind manipulation at play, they have succeeded. I got my mind screwed.

Assange feed has been cut, all is not right in internet land this morning. He activated his dead-man switches, apparently.

It has been a difficult weekend. I am watching leaves fall, makes me sad and nostalgic for something I am not sure I ever had. There is some fear that the net will go down. Hillary must be President. I hope that the Oligarchy has pulled too fast.
I feel like I should stock up on food, just squirrel in for the winter. A forecast shows SNOW next week, only for a few hours. Tomorrow my daughter becomes 28. I remember the weeks before her birth well. I stained an outside deck. It should be done again.;-)

is always simple. We either survive or die. That makes the outlook easy. I don't understand enough about the "internet" and wouldn't even be able to recognize, when the Assange feed has been cut. Shame on me, but I never got so deeply into it and now I am more out of it than inside. I just sense a huge manipulative effect on the mind, when I read too much on the "internet". I am scared to lose internet connection, on the other hand I long for the independence of it. I want to be able to live a happy social and working life outside the social and work related networks of the internet. That looks like it's impossible. So, I feel we are slaves of it. I don't like to be a mind-slave. It very thoroughly depresses me.

The gist of the election is this:

"it's the fault of those who over-ran the Sanders candidacy to run a candidate whose unfavorability is nearly equal to Trump's"

I just told them a few days ago that with his favorability rating in the low 30%, the only way Trump could win the presidency will be because the Dem chose to pick a person whom the populace decide that they hate even more than they hate Trump. So, they should deal with their own stupid decision rather than expecting others who stated clearly at the beginning that they abhor HRC to bail them out.

Anyway, I asked them questions and none of them dare to answer.

!) Are you sure that HRC will not get us into a nuclear war that will kill us all ?
2) Since you say that Bernie's plans were impractical, can you name one of HRC's good plan (i.e not plans to go to war with half of the world) that she will be able to accomplish ?

Every time I ask them those "easy" questions, they just disappear, just to come back days/weeks later with the latest smart statements from the Clinton intelligentsia like "Trump said he could grab pussies" and then cry buckets of tears over it, not over the lives of millions of innocent people who have been killed by the Clinton and her cohorts and, potentially, hundreds of millions more if she keeps it up.

Elect her because we can't afford to elect him. I watched Gwen Iffil's news hour the other day. 75% of the time was discussion evolving around Trump's "scandalous" statements and behavior. Wikileaks was briefly discussed - and even stated that in normal times this would get lots more coverage - but immediately qualified that it pales compared to Trump's various escapades. NOT A SINGLE mention of any other candidates. It's everywhere. Got to vote for her because no sane person can vote for him. I hope the people are not so dumb and will see through this obvious blockade of anything not duopoly approved.

Even though Jill Stein is getting no media coverage, she is still on the ballot in 47 states and DC. This means that anyone getting their ballot is going to open it up and see her name right there next to the others.

It could very well be that a good number of people look at that, say to themselves, "Hey, there's another option here!" and decide "Screw it, I don't know who she is but she has to be better than these two assholes" and then votes accordingly.

It might be a bit of a reach but I don't think it's far-fetched.

"When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained." - Mark Twain

I've got eight different candidates on my ballot. There's the obvious ones, D and R and L and G. There's the Constitution Party and the Better for America. And there are a couple more I've never even heard of. Guess what? They're all legitimate choices if someone thinks that party is the best choice. I despise the idea that to vote third-party is to throw your vote away.
