we went to Montreal for the Expo 67. My older sister and I would hang out in the Youth Pavilion or Youth Center, whatever it was called. Young people from all over. She was able to go see Leonard at some place I wasn't allowed into...alcohol, you see.
So I didn't get to see him that night but she did so I'm glad for her. We both read "Beautiful Losers", his novel and played his album. Nearly 50 years later he still had it and might even have been better. That live album from London is terrific.
Is it weird that this depresses me more than the results of the election?

I was 14. My first time in Canada, stayed at a cottage (moldering house) N of there in St Agathe. Discovered my first boyfriend there, Alan, on the lake beach. First kiss. A cousin of the hosts was with us from Montreal because her mother was busy dying. And I discovered Leonard Cohen. And ate buffalo. But I discovered Leonard Cohen. I do think that he ranks up there with Bob Dylan as a poet with song. Mostly wistful or angry.
And I am not surprised and sad, a Canadian who saw it here

I just put on my glasses for the first time today about five minutes ago because I screwed something up BADLY. Jeeze,I wonder if this means I'd best be wearing them all the time. I don't because I only got them because the DMV flunked me last time I took the eye exam. And I ended up with bifocals, which are a real pain in the ass.
But I really don't see how it could be my glasses because usually when I'm on the computer without them I don't screw up that bad. I do mess up, but not like that. Close but close doesn't count.

rather good news. Leonard's timing has always been impeccable, and his death could not have come at a better time. He was ready to depart, fully prepared and willing - he said so himself.
His death will undoubtedly send psychic shock waves throughout the "Western" world and beyond, such was the power of his artistry. And his life's work is bound to be widely reviewed and analyzed - at just the time when his compassion and deeply insightful wisdom is most desperately needed.
Leonard Cohen's work does not die with his human death. Rather it grows and becomes ever more relevant as time goes on. Such is the nature of serious art, that is informed by "twenty-seven angels from the great beyond".
So let us not bury Leonard, let us praise him. Let us open a bottle of red wine in his honor, and celebrate his life's work and all of creation, with a resounding "Hallelujia"!
