The content is frightening, highly negative--idealistic violets better stop reading now--, and absolutely essential for understanding what you are up against and the lengths to which servants, very well compensated servants, of the oligarchy are willing to go. I have seen evidence in various places that some of these tactics were being used within and against the Sanders campaign last spring. I have also seen just about every trick and tactic described in Part 1 used by the Monsanto shills in various garden fora.
What this article and the two parts which follow amounts is instructions in how to use citizens' naïve idealism against them.

For just one example:
Activities of the Provocateur
1. Establishes “leaders” to set them up for a fall.
2. Suggests doing foolish, illegal things to get the group in trouble.
3. Encourages militancy.
4. Encourages taunting of the authorities.
5. Tries to get activists to compromise their values.
6. Attempts to instigate violence.
7. Attempts to provoke revolt among people who are ill-prepared to deal with the reaction of the authorities to such violence

Bingo
I saw exactly that happen at a garden forum.
The GMO faction manages to portray itself as representing establishment respectability, reasonable, responsible people as opposed to all those crazy fanatics, and it is amazing how many folks buy into the line.
It got to the point where any post at all critical of genetic engineering was banned as "political". When I and a few others requested how 'political' was being defined, the entire forum was abruptly closed and reopened a few weeks later under new, pro-GMO pretending to be neutral, management.

pro-GMOs
TOP/DK is positively teeming with such "folks" as you describe. It got so bad that they even developed an entire vocabulary (example: "anti-science") to use to eliminate opposition to (or even questioning of) GMO crops.

Including
Kos himself. Remember when he outlawed calling people paid shills, no matter how obvious the shillery?

shrubbery, er, shillary, er..... :-)
Oh yeah!
Of course, DK's gone waaaaay around this particular bend now. It's teeming with unpaid, volunteer shills. GMO crops and Hillary Clinton were two beneficiaries of such volunteer shills, which were and are quite plentiful thereabouts. (Ask Galtisalie if you doubt me here!)
Cat forbid someone think for hirself over there. You'll get TO'd until you learn to TO the DLC line.
Gack.

The forum can be useful to collect contact information and
identities of actual dissidents.
Some dissidents can be abused and bullied into saying intemperate things that can be used out of context in later attacks on them. Actual posts of dissidents can even be tampered with to use against them later.
I don't doubt it
asterisk. I have even seen worse than that. One proGMO shill called a complaint from ANOTHER STATE to the Health Dept. of a farmer's state, prompting an unannounced inspection. The farmer passed the inspection with no problem, but it was an annoyance.
