Hot Air

Hundreds of business and government leaders from around the world, as well as experts, nonprofits, national officials, movie stars and celebrities will convene in San Francisco today and tomorrow for the Global Climate Action Summit. Missing is the US military. Heh. These folks are gathering ostensibly to find ways to meet the Paris Agreement goals. But, they will meet, talk, and what? Capitalists want profit. You do the math.

A parallel and alternative conference, sol2sol, reflecting social justice goals is also taking place this week. There is no difference between justice for Gaia and reverence for all people.

How To Avoid “Hot House Earth”

Here is a straightforward and simple path, a clear formula for action, a prescription if you will, that will allow us to avoid the catastrophic repercussions of a “Hot House Earth”.

Simply said...

• We must meet the Paris targets of 1.5 C. Not 2C.

Through Knowledge Peace

December 28, 2017. Cleveland is in a deep freeze. It seems to have come about a month early this winter. The weather service forecasts the cold spell to run for at least another week. I am driving through icy, slushy streets. But it's mostly sunny, though by the rays of a low-arching winter sun. I see one car that looks like it has just been washed. The rest have a road salt glaze.

Let’s talk about the weather

Let’s start with this verse from Lewis Carroll:
"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
The pigs with wings thing is a done deal if you think about Airforce One. The question we seem to be getting closer to an answer for is “why the sea is boiling hot”.

The Svalbard seed bank started flooding

We built a seed bank to preserve food crop seeds against all disasters and catastrophes and buried it in the the world's biggest deep freeze, the Arctic permafrost. It is buried inside a mountain on Spitsbergen, and global warming has produced such unimaginable temperatures there that meltwater flooded into the entrance tunnel.

Six Simple Ideas to Strengthen Democracy in America

Ms. Liberty Bears Six Good Ideas

Fair and reliable elections, an informed citizenry, wide participation in governance -- these are cornerstones of democracy. But the recent election in the U.S.A. has pointed out serious cracks in those stones. Gerrymandered districts weakened voters of one party, and made races non-competitive. Recently-erected hurdles stopped many from voting. Big media focused on the horse race, and ignored policy issues. Persons trafficked in misleading and fake news on social media. And, in the end, demagogy and crackpottery carried the day. What follows are six simple ideas that can, I think, be easily implemented, and that might well go a long way toward fixing those cracks and strengthening our democracy.

Are we going to change our habits to save the planet?

The election distraction lingers on. Meanwhile everyone is gearing up to spend like crazy for the "holidays". The only real way to try to stop the onslaught we are making on the climate is to change our habits in a big way. What better way to start than by not spending except for what we really need to live?

What could be more important than voting?

The answer should be simple but due to the spell elections cast on people's minds it seems not to be. We now have had the hottest month recorded history. Meanwhile very little is being done to keep it from getting much worse. Can you deal with this?

This will be short because it has been said and ignored too many times. "Ignored" you say? Not me! I'm a good guy. I vote the right way and do all things green things. Guess what? I mean YOU.
