Why Does This Sound Like A Pyramid Scheme?

This morning one of my in-laws sent me this via email:

Ever Considered Working From Home?

Melissa Johnson from New Jersey never thought that she would work online, until curiosity got the best of her and she filled out a simple online form. Before she knew it, she discovered her secret to beating the recession, and being able to provide for her family while at home with her three children.

I read Melissa's blog last month and decided to feature her story in our weekly consumer report. In our phone interview she told me her amazing story. "I actually make about $12,500 - $13,500 a month working from home." It's enough to comfortably replace my old jobs' income, especially considering I only work about 15-18 hours a week from home.

My first thought is that this sounds like every other pyramid scheme that requires you to buy something whether it's a product, tickets to a seminar or some other shit someone's trying to pawn off for a quick buck.

Working online has been a financial windfall for Melissa, who struggled for months to find a decent job but kept hitting dead ends. "I lost my job shortly after the recession hit, I needed reliable income, I was not interested in the "get rich quick" scams you see all over the internet. Those are all pyramid scams or stuff which you have to sell to your friends and family. I just needed a legitimate way to earn a living for me and my family. The best part of working online is that I am always home with the kids. Thanks to the My Home Job Search Kit I am giving my kids the childhood they deserve."

But it gets better. These assholes literally try to legitimize the scheme by calling out other similar schemes with even more outlandish promises:

There are plenty of scams on the internet claiming you can make $40,000 a month, but that is exactly what they are - scams. From my conversation with Melissa, "I am making a good salary from home, which is amazing, under a year ago I was jobless in a horrible economy. I thank God every day that I filled out that form."

Quickly, Melissa Johnson was able to use the simple My Home Job Search to make it out of the recession.

Considering all the other scams that have come and gone over the years from Carlton Sheets' real estate buy and flip schemes to Robert Kiyosaki's 'Rich Dad' seminars, this is just one more in a long line of schemes to get the average fuckin' dupe to buy some useless crap with empty promises.

I get what my in-laws are trying to do here, but I really wish they fuckin' knew better.

That being said, here's something I think the Caucus would be interested in:

preying on the desperate and/or gullible trying to find a place in this economy. An economy that’s been set up to reward the very rich as well as scammers and liars. (Frequently they are the same people.)

Cheating became acceptable when The Empty Suit let Wall Street walk away from their crimes and rewarded them with bailout and bonus money. And the American people became their designated ‘prey’.

@The Aspie Corner and it really was all I could do to sit through that idiot on Bloomberg Jimmy took down so nicely. I am still so sickened by that whole thing. I did send a really snarky email about it to one friend who's still on the Amazon "convenience" wagon and loaded it up with snarky metaphors about "Amazon Healthcare" and just what they might, and might not, "offer" to Americans as options for healthcare. I'm not sure she'll get my dig but maybe she will. I'm angry enough today I really don't care either. She tries but the old dumb platitudes that flow from her mouth sometimes still blow me away. Yeah, Bezo's is busily cornering the market on everything and can put everyone else out of business for a monopoly.

Just imagine, apart from what he can save on bringing collapsed workers to the ER, rather than installing air conditioning, he can avoid his workers (or anyone else's) ever being diagnosed with any workplace disease/disorder from toxic exposures or overwork by using his own doctors and insurance company; Worker's Comp/disability can't be applied for without that doctor's certificate, same with sick workers being denied certificates to take time off when deathly ill without being immediately fired...

Edited to maintain the tradition of that traditional letter-typo. I've got to work on retaining my Typo Queen title next year, ya know!

about these work from home online job scams, according to the article there is work to be had if your willing to do it for 3 to 7 dollars an hr. depending on the company and since it is considered contract work there are no labor laws mandating min. wage etc. Sorry I don't remember where I read it but anyway I would definitely be leary of them.

At this point I have some serious concerns about your in-laws getting rooked by this scam themselves.

And I'm surprised that Carlton Sheets is still at large, outside of prison. His real estate scam is so obviously fraud (get the seller to borrow money and pay it to you to buy the property??!!??) that I'm shocked some ambuitious DA somewhere hasn't nailed him by now!

But your call is the right one, amice. If it sounds too good to be true, it is -- always.

Probably a silly question, but was there other identifying matter in the email to indicate that this was definitely from your in-laws? My brother had his account hacked, twice, some years back, and he had no idea about it either time until I and some others told him about the spam mail suddenly arriving from it.

These never say what people actually do online, but there are a lot of contractors supplying internet trolls for various political and commercial interests; I gather this is now a massive industry and tend to assume that that's likely what's being offered as employment. On the other hand, that is just a guess on my part.

@Ellen North that way if my account gets hacked by one of those auto-bots there's no contacts for it to send to. Just keep important emails that you can later search, and if you need to keep contacts have them in a separate file on your computer or flash drive. I've had the same email account for like 10 years now with no problems.

Ok, just thought I'd mention. Hasn't happened for quite a while.
