The National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) was enacted by Congress in June 1933 and was one of the measures by which President Franklin D. Roosevelt sought to assist the nation's economic recovery during the Great Depression.

~

Welcome to Wednesday. Social economics is on the brain today. Not GDP or stock market prices, but a down home understanding of what the economy is for us, the people of a nation,
can realize. A bit of critical thinking is intended to be one focus.

~

Some policies designed to relieve the Depression neglected black workers. New pensions and unemployment insurance introduced in 1935 left out both servants and farm labourers. “It is clear that in his years of planning for Social Security of the common man, Mr Roosevelt never had in mind the security of the American Negro,” she said. Other policies made things worse. Many blacks in the South could get only jobs that whites did not want at pay they would not accept. When the National Industrial Recovery Act lifted the wages and prestige of these jobs, blacks lost them. Roosevelt’s national recovery act, she thought, might as well be called the “Negro Reduction Act”.

Gentle showers this morning. The birds are singing, and I'm sure the garden crops are happy too.

Had planned on mowing today, but now I think I'll go to town and get a leaky tire fixed. Always something to do.

Glad we avoided Elsa. Our Florida friends are dealing with that storm. We got caught by Claudette and Danny so we had our share of tropical weather this summer. I feel for our western friends where no rain is reported for days on end. I would rather have too much than not enough, but I live on a mountain where water flows though but doesn't flood.

I was lucky to know some of the New Dealers from Alabama
Aubrey Williams was one I never met.

However, I did know Cliff

and Virginia Durr

...and feel they were my political mentors.

Cliff thought the courts were the best way to deal with issues. Virginia thought it was by people voting. Sadly both were proven incorrect. One of Virginia's eternal complaints was that she worked so hard to end the poll tax so people could vote, and then they elect George Wallace.

Well have a good day. Hope your boats are floating QMS.

for some reason they seem to come in bunches. Have had a spate of them also lately.
Glad your plants are getting watered aplenty.
Had a wrestling match with a Zodiac yesterday in near gale force winds.
A shoulder and elbow suffered from the struggle but the boats are still afloat.

Hope your day goes well.

in my neck of the woods or flat tire issues for me at the moment. We have though, had an overabundance of rain and flooding in some areas, as well as a population explosion of creepy-crawly-biting insects. I have spotted some very giant grasshoppers that would serve as a meal for a large fish or a whale if whales were inclined to eat them.

As you show in your example, it is telling what is left out of legislation. What is omitted from our news, from our awareness. What does not get attention, what problems do not get addressed let alone solved. Eighty-six years later, here we are. The policies we implement or do not implement, impact our lives. An article in N.C. wrestles with this issue. https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2021/07/an-independence-day-reflection-h...

Thanks for the OT QMS. Hope your gales tone down so you can take a break.

Are Chapulines Good for You?
Chapulines are a healthy choice for meat-eaters since they are low in fat and high in protein. They provide some other essential minerals like zinc and iron, and may help improve gut bacteria.

@Granma

The top photo is of Vanessa Barrago in Portugal who creates large fiber installations.

In the small town of Paderne, Portugal, a whimsical valance of crocheted leaves, dangling tendrils, and petals dyed with subtle gradients encircles the stone archways of a battered medieval bridge.

@QMS I've been thumbing through a book called The Food of Oaxaca by Alejandro Ruiz.
He has two recipes featuring chapulines. A chapulin salsa and hoja santa rolls with chapulines.
The pictures in the book are beautiful. I would so enjoy eating that at his restaurant. I would not attempt to cook them though. His cooking instructions in this instance are too vague for this would-be-grasshopper-eating-neophyte.

grief from subduing the zodiac, next time try to just do one or two sun signs at a time.

I made some noise, as instructed and my wife poked her head into the office to see what the hell was going on. Ah well.

Thanks for the OT, the discourse on SS and the NIRA, not news, but a good reminder. Thanks greatly for the link to thisiscolossal.com - I've seen samples posted here and there, but never just wandered over; lotsa good stuff there.

Today is both Chocolate Day and Macaroni Day, leaving me desirous of some chocolate macaroni (which I know that I have seen somewhere and somewhen, but can't recall more than that. Perhaps just plain ol' elbows sprinkled with shavings from a dark chocolate cooking/candy bar. Perhaps.

be well and have a good one
