Kentucky Bellweather?

Well, this one is more than a bit surprising, no? Despite waging his re-election campaign for the Kentucky governorship against Bernie and socialism and linking Beshear with Bernie, it looks like heavily poll-favored Trump-buddy GOP Gov. Matt Bevin has lost by about 5,100 votes out of 1,442,622 votes cast and counted. Just 5000 votes. I guess voting matters sometimes in someways. Why didn't TPTB fix those voting machines? I suppose that trick can still be played but were they really so stupid as not to use it in advance before the votes were counted?

Bevin's political ad was a real piece of work:

Anyway and however it turns out, this is a damn good sign for Bernie especially given it was in the southern state of Kentucky.

And this bit from some Knoxville cats also looks promising:

The thing I'm regarding as the bellweather is this:

https://www.rawstory.com/2019/11/kentucky-senate-president-thinks-gop-co...

"Kentucky Senate president thinks GOP-controlled state legislature could challenge Democrat’s gubernatorial victory"

Kentucky State Constitution says that “contested elections for governor and lieutenant governor shall be determined by both houses of the General Assembly, according to such regulations as may be established by law.”

It doesn't matter what those plebe voters say, you'll get a Republican and that's final. If we fail to rig the election to our liking, we'll just ignore it.

@WoodsDweller

Let's not forget that Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton by 30 percent in Kentucky — and Trump visited Kentucky in a last-ditch effort to save Bevin’s reelection campaign.

But y'know, even if it's overturned, that could turn out to be a better bellweather than you might imagine in terms of presidential politics. More people could turn out to vote, realizing going to a polling place matters, rather than being discouraged and sitting at home. Yea, it could work the other way, too. Who knows? Should we encourage people to vote or discourage them?

Yet a year before the presidential election, the results offered warning signs for both parties. Voters in suburban swaths of Kentucky and Virginia sided with Democrats, a trend that would complicate Trump’s path to re-election in 2020 if it holds. And the Democrats who made gains in Tuesday’s election did so by largely avoiding positions such as the government-run healthcare plan “Medicare for All” that have animated the party’s left flank in the Democratic presidential primary race.

tRumpolini the conman at Bevin's rally

At the rally, Trump told the crowd: “If you lose, it sends a really bad message … you can’t let that happen to me.”

After the fact

Brad Parscale, Trump’s 2020 campaign manager, sought to frame the Kentucky outcome as a net positive for Trump. “The president just about dragged Gov Matt Bevin across the finish line, helping him run stronger than expected in what turned into a very close race at the end.”

Overconfidence is my off-the-cuff guess, no doubt buoyed by over-reliance on pre-vote polling.

Just a note - in these uncertain times, many queried individuals refuse to respond to polls, or provide false responses (i.e., indicating a preference for a candidate whom they despise). This appears to be proving a sound strategy for electoral sabotage of TPTB ...

and keep count of how many votes by party at polling places, and do at least some strategic exit polling, so they would have known how close it was before the polls were closed and the votes counted. And obviously Dems saw there was a chance of winning based on their own private polling. And Trump made a special effort to be there and rally support for his buddy. So sorry, but I think TPTB would have seen it coming despite the Gov's fake bravado and would have done something about it if they could.

As someone who no longer reads Twitter feeds, you might say I'm unfamiliar with the rantings of what passes for political speech these day. Maybe that's why hearing Bevin's words for the first time came off as laughably inartful and sounded more the dialogue one would hear from comic book villain character rather then a State Governor.

Another reason for me to stay away from social media, I guess.

It was kind of a bloodbath

  • City council Socialist Alternative incumbent Kshama Sawant lost to an Amazon sock puppet
  • City council Berniecrat Sean Scott lost to a blathering centrist
  • But worst, Initiative troll Tim Eyman’s latest electoral dropping I-976 passed, which basically guts transit funding state wide

976 probably passed because the car tab calculations were based on a ridiculous depreciation schedule instead of Kelly blue book, which meant that for me my car tabs on a used 2015 Leaf were based on a $22K value instead of the $12.5 I bought it for two years ago. I’ve pointed this out to two different democratic officials and they agreed but somehow the lack of urgency escaped them...

@Hawkfish bloodbath. According to this from the SeaTimes, the council appears to have gone from 5-4 in favor of the downtown big business interests to a 5-4 majority for those not backed by same.

Even a 6-3 majority for non-big badness interests if socialist Sawant manages to eke out a win. Apparently the outstanding votes it's predicted will heavily favor her, possibly enough to make up the margin.

Dunno about the Egon Orion (sic) guy who is currently ahead of Sawant. Apparently LBGT-backed, mostly in favor of progressive policies, but had problems with Sawant's aggressive or something style.

And where do you get a name like Orion? I know this involves a name change, but why that? Something to do with the 3 belt stars and that nursery for stars lying beneath? Ancient Egypt?? People want to know ...

@Wally but I'm not sure at what time that SeaTimes article was posted. And I haven't been able to see the actual vote numbers to see how many she needs to make up, just that she is behind by a 5-6 pct points, which doesn't sound entirely promising.

In any case, it appears to have been a mixed bag outcome in Seattle, with the city council majority shifting slightly to favor those not big business backed.

Meantime I will hope for Sawant and later investigate why her opponent has a name of Orion.

@Hawkfish on the streets for the same causes and the Bezos/Gates puppet is not going to enjoy his term and neither will the voters.
Up here in Whatcom County Tim Eyeman's latest poisonous referendum failed and of course we are stuck with the results but like many other of his referendums some of it will end up in the Courts.

The best news here in Bellingham,Seth Fleetwood, someone I've voted for in his elections to the County and City Council terms was elected Mayor! A real Berniecrat and attorney who has helped many people and causes (not just getting plastic bags banned, which Seattle copied).
Too bad tRump supporter (altho not so openly), Sheriff 'we need more jails' Elfo also got reelected but our Mayor can keep a lid on Elfo, at least I hope so because building another jail (while doing no improvement on the one we have) will be pushed again and if so hopefully defeated again.
As for the City Council those I voted for won, with the possible exception of Mr. Satpal who at last night's count was behind by only sixty-four votes and I truly hopes he wins over Tony Larsen.

One last note, I live downtown in the classic Oakland building (City Hall for 1890 to 1895) which is right across the street from Marine Park where the 'Occupy' camp happened and in the 2016 Caucus which was set at the library (which Bernie overwhelmingly won)the 'occupy' people were there in big numbers.
Of all ages too, as I was 66 years old at the time and I had a lot of company in my age group, even older and I should say that there were a lot of the same faces I saw often from even six years ago in the successful fight to block the construction of the largest coal terminal in North America.
So there is a very good activist base here which I discovered soon after moving here almost fifteen years ago (to this apt.!) from Paris Texas because just like with the 'occupy' movement almost all demonstrations either begin and/or end at Marine Park.

I expect another referendum will happen to repeal the worst stuff in Tim Eyeman's latest toxic legislation just as it has happened on some of his other 'referendums'.

SLC, UT is doing a great job working with people who are homeless and getting them off the streets and into houses. One area of SLC was full of homeless, drugs and crime. The police raided the area and cleaned it up and then the city has built 3 more homeless shelters. It's also asking developers to build affordable housing to keep people from being tossed into the streets. I have seen lots of praise for what the city is trying to do. But..not from the people who live there. Seems that no matter what cities try to do it's never the right thing. I don't know, maybe more affordable housing would help keep housing costs from gauging other people? But it's been shown that if you teach a man to fish..the same thing is happening with helping people get a leg up. They renter society..

F'ck Bezos and every company that keeps its money offshore. Before berated Apple for their idea of addressing affordable housing. He said that if they had paid their fair share of taxes from the get go cities wouldn't be hurting as badly now. I sure hope to see Bernie going after Bezos.

conservadem Governor Steve Beshear.

I'm 'guessing' that the implementation of Medicaid Expansion by Daddy Beshear is a primary reason he (Andy) won.

Which, I might add, is a watered-down, conservative version of the federal Medicaid program. IOW, it's 'managed care.'

The Department for Medicaid Services (DMS) currently contracts with five (5) Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) to provide coverage for most of Kentucky’s Medicaid recipients.

Also, according to MSM reporting, Beshear didn't touch impeachment on the campaign trail; instead, he concentrated on health care, etc., same as many of the Deep State/conservadem Dem Party candidates from Red districts did in 2018. It worked, since they swung the House to Dems. Obviously, it's a major win, since it will greatly help Dems with redistricting.

Plus, there's the fact that Matt Bevin is, currently, very unpopular--even, with many Repubs. Heard that he's considered to be a "carpetbagger." (no idea where's he's from, though)

In 2016, Bevin won by 9 or 10 points, compared to DT's 30 points. So, Beshear's win wasn't exactly an upset. IOW, it's been watched closely for months, with the expectation that Beshear might win.

Can't be certain, but, don't expect TN or AL will follow suit. (Don't know about other Southern states.)

I think that DT has definitely lost luster with some Repubs in TN and AL, but, can't imagine that any of the Dem Party candidates could win, either. Barring some unforeseen bombshell occurrence, that is. (in those two states) Or, unless he losses the bulk of white evangelical vote/support between now, and November 2020. Time will tell.

Interested in seeing what Jeff Sessions will do. I believe that he'd likely wipe the floor with Doug Jones, or any other Dem--unless, DT goes after him, big time. (Which, from what I've read, is highly likely.) It would be a fascinating race to watch, in that it'd be the first time (that I can recall) that a sitting President tried to blatantly derail a Senate run in his own Party.

a. within the constraints of the current system his healthcare proposals are pretty progressive -- especially in their emphasis of women's access and rights.

b. he won the election by standing up for education spending, and in particular, for teachers.

I'm pretty good with both of those.

And I generally don't expect anybody running for state-level offices (legislative or executive) to be making a point of discussing policies that are national and international in scope.

So, hey, maybe is just a conservadem schmuck, but managed care is better than no care at all.

Pluto's Republic's picture

...that there was a profound shift in consciousness that resulted from Bernie's 2016 campaign. His words broke the old reality and its narrative for voters. Reinforced by his current campaign, that may be reflected in Kentucky. The People may have been inspired to vote holistically; to vote for the wellbeing of the society that they live in.

I guess voting matters sometimes in someways. Why didn't TPTB fix those voting machines? I suppose that trick can still be played but were they really so stupid as not to use it in advance before the votes were counted?

My guess is that they did trick the vote in Kentucky, as always. However, this time it wasn't nearly enough. I strongly suspect that this is what happened in the 2016 Presidential election. The vote counts were kicked up for Hillary in select high-density states, but it wasn't enough. She was defeated by the small counties. When Pennsylvania results were held back on election night, her campaign knew it was over and left. The raw exit polling numbers tell the real story. There were many such anomalies that benefitted Hillary, including the Iowa Caucus of 2016. These did not make the news.

Commercial polling is set to miss the mark again. I don't think it can evolve as a system when it is not centered on intellectual honesty.
