Here we have your basic Emergency Open Thread

The sun is up, I'm up and there is no OT. OTOH, I've got a ton to do today, no plan, no topic, and no real inspiration. The muse is off somewhere musing about something. We (my wife & I) adhered to the women's day "no women" program except that, obviously, she was here.

Soon it is time to take the trailer for the first trip of the year, to check out chunks of the coast and coastal bloom. (We're skipping the desert trip this year.) So, among other things, time to start packing.

The news mostly sux. The sunshine doesn't. Nor does the fact that I need to freshen my sourdough starter to get ready to make bread for the jurney.

Meanwhile, my wife,

so let's sing this all together

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Granma's picture

On radio last in car. His book is a novel about an immigrant. Author had to flee his own country, was in Pakistan for a while, USA now, and at least one other country in between. What he said that stuck with me is that the negatives maker a strong impression and stick with us because our brains are made that way. It is a survival thing built into us.

For example, we may see 100 people in a day and forget all except the one who made a racist comment. That one will stay with us for 10 years. He said all the fear things in the news so constantly, both here and in Pakistan stay with us. But we need to combat that rather than let it color our whole perspective on life and how we live it.

I'm not sure I've expressed this adequately or well, but it has given me much food for thought. I wonder what others think.

@Granma from our hunter/gatherer days. Less importance with where the food is than the danger lurking there.

Thanx EL.
Are you looking at the same Friday sunbreak on the Oregon coast as I am?
Heh, sunbreak, some don't know the phrase. Eh?

Perhaps you’ve heard about the sudden death of Russia’s U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin? It’s all nefarious Kremlin intrigues — or so we’re told. In fact, a lot of Russian diplomats have died recently — isn’t that suspicious? And don’t look now, but while you were fixated on Russia’s subversion of American society through psychological warfare, you may have missed that Russia’s expanding its influence in Syria. And provoking Japan. And meddling with Britain. And it’s sowing “chaos” in the Balkans. And the Baltics. And Ukraine. And may invade Belarus. And Finland. And if that weren’t enough, Putin has a “master plan” for overthrowing the entire European and world democratic order. We might as well give up: Russia “runs the world now.”

@gjohnsit

Lol, so Russia is responsible for everything that the US PTB do? Indeed, time to surrender to Putin, 'The Great Manipulator'!

Is well above average. Big, big stream flows will bless us all summer long.
We like to back country more than anything. Some of the Forrest roads will be impassable thru July, but we usually get as far as we can and then park and camp. We have a small four/six wheel drive mini motorhome that takes us far into the mountains. Can't wait. Cabin fever strangling.
The falls pictured in my icon will be a challenge well into June. Will try to refresh that photo from the drier year it was taken. Stay tuned.

@earthling1 My dog bops in and out through the dog door but has become alerting from sunset for 2 hours of dark-barking. Very annoying, and creepy. I can deal with out and about for 1-2 hours a day in The Boot, and then it gets uncomfortable. Practicing being horizontal for 16 hours/day, prepping for Monday surgery (pending Labs). Should know tomorrow. Much reading getting done, also sleep. Next Tuesday looks like another Snow Day, I should be home and surrounded by pillows.

Saw a tree is unfurling bud, guessing a willow. Bud swell showing more places.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

earthling1's picture

@riverlover You use them much, much more than you think, as you are finding out.
Been following your predicament for weeks now. I hope you heal before summer.
I can relate though.
Last fall I got my flu shot and sprung for the Prevnar 13 pneumonia vax thinking I was good to go.
Last week I come down with the worst bacterial infection settling in my upper respiratory tract that I've had in years. Been on my back all week and so sick of it. Normally this time of year we would be down on the Cali coast or Death Valley. Rainbirds are what we're called.
I gotta get outta this place, if it's last thing I gotta do.
Take care, riverlover. Get well soon.

lately we've been calling you "Sea Otter" or "EL", which is Latin for sea otter. Thus the "hydra".

As mentioned several weeks back, both shaz and I are burned out on doing the OT so we'll need someone to step in and take over Thursday's. She tried to get one done last night but she likes doing it from the "new essay" page and, as you probably know, if you don't save it every so often and you keep adding links there's always the chance that you might forget to open a new window and poof! all the work has been wiped out! At which point (1 a.m.) one might say "screw it" and go to bed.

@Shahryar isn't "hydra" Greek? I must look this up!

@Shahryar
really geared up to step up into that. Also, we're going camping for a couple of weeks in a few days anyway.

At any rate, today I decided to throw something up there, and I like to work from my favourite text editor, and anything I might do several times I like to do from a template, so I threw a template for ad hoc OTs together and, needing a name, called it Emergency OT (which is where that came from).

Der Wiki, FWIW, confirms enhydra from Greek and Lutris from Latin --

The first scientific description of the sea otter is contained in the field notes of Georg Steller from 1751, and the species was described by Linnaeus in his Systema Naturae of 1758.[5] Originally named Lutra marina, it underwent numerous name changes before being accepted as Enhydra lutris in 1922.[6] The generic name Enhydra, derives from the Ancient Greek en/εν "in" and hydra/ύδρα "water",[7] meaning "in the water", and the Latin word lutris, meaning "otter".[8]
