Help Us Select A New Name For This Site--UPDATED

Update: If you have any new site name suggestions, please add them in the comments. In a few days we will aggregate the suggested names and decide which we will use. Thanks for participating.

Finally the new Drupal upgrade to version 8 has been released, but I'm going to put off installing it until it is more stable, probably in a couple of months. Another reason to put it off for a while is the many modules (non-core programs) that we use for c99p will not be compatible until they are rewritten for v.8. Much of our site would cease to function without the updated modules.

Soon we will need to renew our server and domain name fees, so if we're going to do it now is the time to change the name of this site, as we've been talking about for months. Here are a few I've been bandying about and a few submitted by others.

Some of mine:
TrueBlueRebel
BlueRebel

Taken from a quote by Joe Hill: "Goodbye Bill. I die like a true blue rebel. Don't waste any time in mourning. Organize". ~Telegram to William "Big Bill" Haywood (1915-11-18), quoted in International Socialist Review, vol. XVI (December 1915)

---------------------------------------------

WeSingTogether

Another quote from Joe Hill: "All the world is made of music. We are all strings on a lyre. We resonate. We sing together".

---------------------------------------------

TieDownaLion

From an Ethiopian proverb: "When spiders unite, they can tie down a lion".

WhenSpidersUnite would also work.

I have to say, I'm very fond of BlueFrondeur.
Meaning of frondeur: rebel
Origin of fondeur: 1790-1800; French: literally, a participant in the Fronde (the rebellion against royal authority during the minority of Louis XIV), equivalent to Fronde + -eur

Bread and Roses (already in use so it would have to be a variant)
That has a long and honorable left tradition, deriving from an early 20th Century speech by Rose Schneiderman, who said "The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too."

This would make an excellent name but would need to be changed or added to as it's already in use.

------------------------------------------

Now let's hear from you folks, any ideas?

Note: I saw some suggestions in last night's Evening Blues, please resubmit them here. We will take a consensus of the members, but joe shikspack and I will make the final decision.

drop an "a," and thus become "bred and roses," which I think has a certain charm. A rabbit, then, perhaps, could serve as logo.

Or perhaps go Hasidic, as in "rye and roses," which would permit as animated logo a rapidly davining earnest progressive wo/man.

is taken. To check a name, type it in your address bar and see where it takes you. You shouldn't do that at a hosting site that checks name availability, most of them will take possession of the name and charge more for it if you don't buy it immediately when you ask about it. Ask for it a second time and it will cost more.

Or is that taken as well?

(Actually I'm perfectly happy with the current name and see no real pressing need to change it. Maybe I'm just change averse. Or dense.)

-- John Lennon

and if anyone cares to know caucus99percent was not my creation. I see pros and cons in keeping the current name, and in the end there may be more cons than pros.

Pros:
The name caucus99percent goes right to the heart of the dilemma that we face, the massive wealth inequality that is crushing the middle class and destroying the poor. Almost everyone can identify with the 99percent.

Cons:
Are we really a caucus? A caucus for the 99percent? What is a caucus for the 99percent and are we it?

The term 99percent was popularized by the Occupy movement, and using 99percent could be seen as affiliating us with Occupy, which we are not, even though several of our members participated in it. I think it wise to decouple ourselves from that impression.

Having 99percent as a part of our site name is a huge red flag for the alphabet agencies filters that use key words to search the internet for surveillance purposes.

I could probably think of some more cons but that should be enough to make the case. I think a more innocuous name would be better.

LapsedLawyer's picture

what the heck is so wrong about being seen as affiliated with Occupy? It's the kind of movement many of us here are looking for and looking to build and build upon, and I feel there are plenty of others out there that were and are equally so inspired. So I'm not so sure that it's a problem.

As for "caucus", well, I'm not wedded to that, so maybe "forum99percent" or "Forgeof99percent" or some other word might do to convey our effort here at building something to replace our decrepit, outdated, moribund, corrupt, and downright dangerous political system as it's currently constituted.

The alphabet agencies and keys? Well, okay, but at this late date I think they flag pretty much everything anyway, and our posts alone carry enough red flags to get us caught up in that dragnet. Please do elaborate (in plain English please Wink ) on this point.

In other words, I'm not exactly persuaded by your points.

with being affiliated with Occupy at all. I'm behind the concept fully even though I didn't get to actively participate. Since in no "official" capacity has this site been affiliated with the Occupy movement in the past or present that it seems a bit presumptuous of us to claim even the impression of said affiliation. This has been discussed in the past on this board and several members agreed with the assessment that we should decouple..

We agree on "caucus".

It is true that it's already too late after having our name for a year now, and also true that all the net is dragged anyway. But why keep pushing it? You may not be concerned about the alphabet agencies honing in on our site, but I'll guarantee there are plenty of folks that are. We've had folks stop participating here for that very reason. I had no input into this site's domain name when it was registered and I've made it clear for some time that I'm not enamored with it.

I could have just gone ahead and renamed it myself rather than open it to the membership.

I also like 1, the train or Blue(s) Train. I like that it's leaving the station, its light cutting through the darkness. I like the fact that its moving and going someplace. (Some of that comes from the ClueTrain. Remember that?)

I really like the painting style in 8 and 9. I would put them on my wall. I also the than one represents the few and the other represents the many or a movement. Neither is really a stand-alone icon, but there is something familiar about them and the invisible people behind the walls facing the street.

The Norman Rockwell at 17 is evocative to me. It has the Capra tone of the era, when people were still in control of government. Of course, that was before the Federal government was seized in the quiet coup during the Reagan years. Presidential brain scans are a must in the 21st century…but I digress. I like that it carries the idea of speaking truth (mainstreet) to power (wallstreet).

Again, I didn't know any of this before I started looking at pictures and allowing my left hemisphere to interpret.

He worked in and around the earliest years of the Russian Revolution, before the new boss became the old boss.

What people forget is that there actually was idealism at the beginning of the Revolution. Starvation and civil war aside, Moscow was the most exciting place in the world to be. When Mayakovsky said, “Let us make the squares our palettes, the streets our brushes,” he meant it. Every wall was a painting. There were painted trains, boats, airplanes, balloons. Wallpaper and dinner plates and gum wrappers were all created by artists who genuinely thought they were making a new world. They all believed anything was possible.

Lenin’s tomb is a Constructivist design inspired by Malevich. It’s a red square on Red Square. There’s more to it than just Lenin laid out like a smoked herring. Art was everywhere in those days. Tatlin designed a revolving skyscraper taller than the Empire State Building. Popova drew high fashions for peasants. The artists of Moscow were going to paint the trees of the Kremlin red. Lenin did object to that, but people thought that anything was possible. Those were days of hope, days of fantasy.

Malevich said in 1918 that “footballs of entangled centuries would burn out in the sparks of bubbling light waves.”

We live in the archeological ruins of that new world that never was. If we knew where to dig, who knows what we would find?

Except that I don't like the analogy since lions don't at all deserve to be compared to the American Ruling Class.

Lions are nothing like those greedy assholes.

Lions only take what they need to survive and lions do not play a part in the destruction of Our Mother Earth.

So while us spiders could unite to tie down a lion, my question would be, why would we spiders want to do that?

There is no animal on earth that deserves to be compared to the Ruling Class. Nothing like our present day Ruling Class-with the power to destroy the very Earth we live on-has ever existed. I can't even begin to imagine an analogy that works for that situation.

The men who were selected to shoot bullets into the heart of Fellow Worker Joe Hill will, apparently, be very well paid, for most of the nearly 380 dollars, allocated by the county for that purpose, goes to them. refers here more to the Blue (like the color for Democrats) or more to the Blues (which is beloved here). Also, I think one should know if one would like to be labeled a "Rebel" or an "Anarchist" or which word would indicate that this is a group of people, who likes to distance itself from the "main stream Democrats" (!?).

I just ran in an article about the German anarchist culture in the US: Beer and Revolution: Some Aspects of German Anarchist Culture in New York, 1880–1900 ... very funny-strange to read for me. How about you call yourself the "Social-Revolutionary Blue(s) Brothers" ? This German sister would be generous and accept that sort of "sexist" name ... Smile

Putting route in there makes it feel like we're headed somewhere, not stagnant. And I also like the idea of keeping 99 in there. This is my new favorite.

My second favorite is "Blue Moon Rising", the word Rising gives the feeling that we are doing something, going somewhere, And I love the image of a Blue Moon. Also once in a Blue Moon, us radicals actually have a victory, so that right fits into a description of this little band of unicorn dreamers. And also, it fits right in with being "the home of the Evening Blues."

True Blue Rebels is good too, but has a strong association with the struggle within the US labor movement for Revolutionary Industrial Unionism. This site has members who are part of that movement, but this site also has a broader outlook (green movement, peace movement, etc), so that name, I think, would not be a good fit for this site.

I think a lot of us here are pretty disillusioned with Democratic Party politics in general, and are not at all averse to making our way toward a third party. It's one of the reasons, I feel, we left DK to begin with; discussion of issues was being stifled in favor of electoral politics with the goal of electing more Democrats, the better part being left far far behind.

That's why I like keeping some semblance of the name we have: This frustration with DK, at least on my part, began with Occupy and its "We Are The 99%" slogan, and how they were so many on the GOS willing to flame any post that favored the movement and pointed out the weaknesses of the current iteration of the Democratic Party. This flaming, of course, received zero upbraiding from the admins, while any disgruntlement with any aspect of current Democratic Party operations and organization was met with a blizzard of HRs.

I like your suggestions, but I'd like "99" to be part of the title still.

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

99%Blues, I'm with gg I don't like blue on it's own as I'm sick and tired of the 'partisan' blue vs. red culture war bs. brand/game of politics. Nobodies Blues Party is good. I know we talk politics here but it seems to me it's outside the designated lines drawn by the freaking media and pols. I too like the 99% as it designates solidarity with the people and workers globally. I do not like the term progressive as it always seemed to be a way to avoid the terms of lefty or liberal. The original progressive's must be spinning like tops at the current co-opting by the Democrat's who are anything but progressive. I don't like Rebel as like dkmich it congers up the confederacy. FarLeftBlues?

'With a rebel yell I said more more more' and this scary dude also come to mind with rebel..... As for flags for the spooks I think that this is like closing the barn door...
