"Big Bad Russia" was so bad we stole all their B movies.

Like Soviet rocketry, Russian sci fi movies were way ahead of anything Hollywood was putting out in the 50's. There were some very good movies that were quite well done and had better production values than found in the west.

Russian sci fi was about exploring our universe and about science and what was possible. Everytime that Hollywood stole a Russian sci fi movie, they turned it into monsters invading or threatening mankind.

How very fascist of us.

So if you've got a hankering for a little Saturnday matinee, I give you the Russian movie: A Dream Come True.

To learn more about the differences between western and Soviet sci fi, I recommend you read The Cold War in Science Fiction

A large part of American science fiction in the 50s and 60s looked to the stars in fear of alien invasion, while Soviet films dreamed of space exploration and utopia. The Soviet Union never reached quite the same level of Cold War hysteria as the United States, much of the science fiction of the late 50s and 60s focused on utopian futures reached by combination of socialism and technological advancement; while in the US “the Cold War was largely responsible for the prominence of alien invasion and post apocalypse narratives.”

From Wiki:

Mosfilm (Russian: Мосфильм, Mosfil’m pronounced [məsˈfʲilʲm]) is a film studio which is among the largest and oldest in the Russian Federation and in Europe.[2] Its output includes most of the more widely acclaimed Soviet-era films, ranging from works by Andrei Tarkovsky and Sergei Eisenstein (commonly considered the greatest Soviet director), to Red Westerns to the Akira Kurosawa co-production Dersu Uzala (Дерсу Узала) and the epic War and Peace (Война и Мир).

Mosfilm produced more than 2000 movies during the Soviet era. Many are available online today, some with English subtitles. I have enjoyed more than a few.

This is a very important window into Soviet era culture. I have been fascinated by this. It gives you a multidimensional picture of Soviet life, rather than the Western Soviet = bad.

Here is their URL: http://cinema.mosfilm.ru/
My browser, Chrome, automatically translates it into English.

Capitalism has always been the rule of the people by the oligarchs. You only have two choices, eliminate them or restrict their power.
