I Don't Get It

The other day an acquaintance posted a Trump rant on FB that began with the words "I don't get it."

Ever since grade school, those four words have been interchangeble with a desire to understand. It's a student's distress call that they aren't keeping up with the rest of the class.

Naively, I figured this was how she had intended to use the phrase. I did not cross my mind that I could know someone who would proudly announce their ignorance, followed by riducule towards anyone who makes such an effort.

"I’m not trying to understand racism and hate."

When I noted that she could be the first to start a conversation to perhaps find some common ground she saw it as me putting the onus on her. Then she deflected to the two parties and professional politicians.

That deflection was such a cop out. And this is after I gave my assessment that the two parties have teamed up against the populace to sell our country down the river.

I **do** believe the onus is on her, at least in her world.

I think this is the terminal symptom of TDS–they prefer to villify their neighbors, and the easiest way to do that is to ascribe the personal traits to DJT to all of the people who voted for him. Ask a liberal, they will tell you all Trump voters are scumbag rapists, racists, liars and cheats.

It's easier to paint all 80 million supporters with the same broad brush than it is to understand what led to their POV.

And no, I don't get it.

IDK if I could be called a "liberal" or not. I did not vote for the present administration, and I do not respect the current president. I grant you he has some good ideas. I have good ideas, as do you and many others. The difference is that you, me, and others are not trying to ram our notions down other people's throats by bullying and namecalling. I do respect the right of fellow citizens to vote as they choose, and I hope they do the same for me.

I also doubt you will find very many of the offended PMC on this forum.

I am a big believer in addressing complaints to the people who did do the crime, say the rude thing, or disrespect me. I consider it part of being a grownup not to expect innocent bystanders to feel my righteous outrage. I might not like someone's personal style, way of speaking or personal habits, but that does not mean they did anything to me nor is it necessarily "an example" of whatever trait I hate the most this month.

My personal view, no reflection intended on anyone else, is that chaos, confusion and cruelty are no way to govern a school district, let alone an entire giant country.

Also my personal view, I think the far left needs to figure what country they are living in. Hint, you see that big blue blob on the map between NYC and London. It is called the Atlantic Ocean and it is 3,000 miles wide. It "narrows" to about 1000mi.and change in between the bulges of South America and Africa. North America is not Eurasia and you, Mr. or Ms. committed radical, are not living in the city in Mittle Europe where your grandparents came from. I think the far right needs to grow up already. Sure, I can understand their pain and frustration, but I didn't cause it.

@Nastarana I'm sorry for having used the word "liberal" if you feel it applies to you. The unsaid part of this essay was that I had announced to this individual ahead of time that I've been terribly chagrined by people who insincerely said they "wish they understood" something when what they really wished for was to have the other person adopt their beliefs.

“He may not have gotten the words out but the thoughts were great.”

@bondibox bondibox. A way of sucking a person into a one-sided lecture. Not a conversation.
How can "lefties" keep on with their TDS when they capitulate over and over?
Ex: reversing the government shut down. They won the midterms, immediately afterwards, capitulated.
One of my friends is head of the Democratic Party and another is head of the Republican Party in this county.
I totally understand hate, racism, war, peace, PACs, and what the 1% is doing to the 99%.
