This is our regressive social order.

And we're damned proud of it.

So they let off Kyle Rittenhouse with, well, nothing. As a commentator on Facebook said: "The Rittenhouse decision has basically deputized white supremacists to kill protestors with impunity. Political violence on a new scale and register is coming our way." Remember, as I said earlier, that political alliances run America.

Then on the other side of the globe you have "where is Peng Shuai?"

This is all to be regarded on the coat-tails of Russia's situation and Nicaragua's situation.

It appears that planet Earth's reaction to capitalism unto death is to split up into groups and to allow a few men (and I do mean men) in those groups to decide things for everyone in those groups. Left alternatives will be co-opted or forbidden, and democracy is to be reduced to a formality. Vigilantes will decide "justice" for us. The Chinese leadership will decide for the Chinese people who is and who isn't to be raped. The Nicaraguans and Russians will let leaders decide for everyone.

I think once again the media is not telling the whole truth. They lied about Rittenhouse and some are still lying. One says that he took a gun over state lines. He didn’t. Another says that he killed 3 black people. They were all white. They also lied about Saddam having WMDs and lied for 5 years about Trump and Russia. It seems their job is to lie to us and sow divisions. It’s working ain’t it?

Rittenhouse had a friend illegally purchase the gun for him because he wasn't old enough to buy it legally himself. The older friend purchased the gun in Wisconsin, so, yes, it never crossed the state line.

Rittenhouse's friend, Dominick Black, has been charged with two counts of intentionally giving a dangerous weapon to a person under the age of 18 causing death, according to court records.

Yesterday I posted the video from the guy Jimmy has on and they show how it was actually self defense. It’s very informative for those who have just heard what the mainstream media has said.

There’s no reason for the talking points of crossing state lines or white supremists after seeing this. The videos were shown to the jury and it’s why they came to the not guilty decision. I’ve never seen anyone say that Kyle ran away from the people he shot, but he certainly did.

Yes division is the stock and trade of the news media both nationally and locally here. I think with Kyle Rittenhouse they have just told the next protestors to arm themselves. I think the writing is on the wall; there is no longer a solution within the ever-constricting bounds of legality - but there is a solution.

I think part of the problem is that political alignments are supposed to be free-floating - but by locking things in place as they have for the past 40 years (AND killing the Fairness Doctrine, that was clearly a biggie), the duopoly has directly caused this unsustainable polarization.

I reiterate my refrain: Chaos is not the problem; the simple-minded desire to impose Order is. Welcome to the Eternal Ourobouros Rodeo.

The videos in evidence clearly show looting and arson, i.e. rioting. When does one loot a store in southern Wisconsin to "protest" a killing in fucking Minnesota?

Cops shooting black arrestees is just a convenient political excuse to commit major felony.
If I have to choose between a police state and constant threat of arson, I'll choose the police state. Remember these are the same bastards that shut down Bernie speaking on Social Security. They are not the voice of the people. They are the enemies of the people.

I also check Drudge everyday. Two items on Drudge that are potentially BIG news are the Flash Mob Pillaging going on in SF. A Louis Vuitton store had a team of looters who cleaned out their store in minutes and a larger group numbered about 50-100 entered a Nordstrom's and left in 25 cars loaded with loot.

This is a big story because when a similar thing happened in Soho, NYC last year an NYPD Captain told the local news channel that "As yet, we have not found a way to prevent or stop these attacks."

When a guy like me is thinking of buying military type weapons and submitting to fascist government for physical safety, the Republic is on its last legs.

Rittenhouse? I don't like his looks, but jury trials are not supposed to be determined by personal like/dislike. I think the kid wanted to be a hero, saw too many Dirty Harry movies. I think the crying on the stand was genuine. He found out the Life is not a movie. How many of my classmates found that out in the jungles of Viet Nam? I know many did not come back. and they were not volunteers.
If trials are based on politics and personal likes/dislikes then there is no civilization.
I spent that week recuperating from surgery in a Hospital. Not much to watch on TV. It was obvious that what NBC was saying is false.

On a practical note - what kind of idiot charges a man carrying a rifle?
I remember slapping away a pistol pointed at me in High School, so maybe I am that kind of idiot. Or maybe was. I sure wouldn't do it today.

Before you ask what was Rittenhouse doing there, ask "what were the arsonists and looters doing there?" Why did the Governor say he was "too busy" to call out the National Guard? I predict the next Governor will be (R) again. WI and MI used to be solid (D) states, until the (D) party turned away from FDR and starting fellating big business.

That's one of the cop's purposes. They are supposed to keep the public safe, other is to

What the cops are supposed to do and what they actually can or will do (obviously) do not always align. What were the Korean store owners supposed to do in the LA riots when the police abandoned entire areas of the city, stand aside and invite the looters and arsonists in?

How about this? I, a lawfully armed Texan happen to be passing by and see someone breaking into a car. Yours. I intervene verbally and tell them to stop and get lost. They attack me and I respond with my weapon, injuring or killing them. Where do you figure I stand legally and morally?

Was I being socially irresponsible by attempting to intervene personally and not simply calling the cops and watching events transpire? Or calling them and just driving off?

Except for the fact that they were there proactively (several businesses in the immediate area having been destroyed the previous night) I don't see much difference from the above scenario in the role the armed people (not just men, there were some women) guarding businesses were playing in Kenosha the night the shootings occurred.

I'v been under the impression that preventing wanton destruction of property was, in general, held to be a social good and a matter of social responsibility - was I wrong?

Black gun-rights groups have started open-carry marches at anti-racism protests
Peter Weber July 26, 2020

More than 300 heavily armed Black protesters marched in formation through Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, demanding progress on the slow investigation of the police killing of Breonna Taylor. The same group, the Not F---ing Around Coalition (NFAC), had recently marched in Stone Mountain, Georgia, wearing black and carrying their semi-automatic rifles, protesting the Atlanta suburb's namesake monument depicting Confederate generals, and a separate armed Black group marched in Oklahoma City in June to mark President Trump's Tulsa rally.

They have gotten mixed reactions from Black Lives Matter protesters, who do not carry firearms to demonstrations.
...
Black Americans, like white Americans, have been buying firearms in unusually large numbers since the COVID-19 pandemic started, and Black gun ownership picked up more after the police killing of George Floyd, Politico reports, citing a sharp uptick in new memberships in Black gun owner organizations.

The general chaos of the pandemic was one factor in the surge in memberships, but the Floyd killing and subsequent protests were a "line in the sand" for many many new members, Phillip Smith, president of the National African American Gun Owners' Association, told Politico. "The days are over of African Americans sitting around singing 'Kumbaya' and hoping and praying that somebody will come and save them. We're gonna save ourselves." Armed Black Panther demonstrations convinced the NRA and California Gov. Ronald Reagan, the future president, to support gun control in the late 1960s.

Did all off them believe because of their being white males with intent to help those they perceived needing protection give them superior rights to be free from consequences.

By continually stating this is a win for "white supremacists" we ignore this was a violent confrontation between white men on both sides. Everyone involved in the confrontation had their life impacted permanently from death, disability and impact of being fully prosecuted for a crime.

It is becoming simply an excuse for "Let the Riots Begin". Another year of riots and violence locally may be just what is needed to distract from Covid, economy and drumbeats of war. No need to extend hard effort to create peace and communities for people to thrive.

The judge threw out the minor in possession of a weapon charge against Rittenhouse because the length of the barrel and overall length were longer than the law specifies. It seems that in the 90s, Wisconsin passed a gun law aimed at gang members armed with sawed off shotguns and short-barreled rifles. That law let Rittenhouse off the hook and informs young gang members that they can freely carry rifles around when the appropriate measurement is 16.1" or longer and shotguns where it's 18.1" or more.

essays in support of BLM, in support of unions and workers generally, in support of ecologically sound alternatives to the ways we currently live, in support of civil liberties--and against capitalism, the police state, and their ugly convergence. I'd say almost the entire site supports Medicare for All, Social Security, an at least 15-dollar minimum wage, better working conditions, the strikes, clean water and air, climate change mitigation. A sizable portion of the site still supports BLM despite the co-optation of at least part of the movement.

You ignore all this and call it a "conservative" site. Meaning that the left is what you think it is and nothing else--and apparently you don't consider things like support of workers, support of civil liberties, support of alternative energy economies, or opposition to capitalism as "left."

How do you not get this at this moment in history?

The "Left" supports neoliberal economic policies and neoconservative policies on war, police, imprisonment, and surveillance. The "Left," in fact, supports the end of the New Deal and the Great Society. The "Left" supported Michael Bloomberg, front and center on the stage at their convention for about an hour while they waved BLM signs in the audience.

They are ideologically indistinguishable from the supporters of Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. Which is why they're busy rehabilitating W's reputation. The only way in which they differ from the original recipe neoconservatives is that they're willing to promote people of color to visible positions of authority, and pay them well for it.

Extra Crispy Neoconservatives with a side of rainbow gravy.

then I think you’d be right at home on DK because you see only one way to get out of the epidemic. Early treatments that have always had a place in medical issues can’t be used because the PTB message that you buy into says it can’t. Really can’t understand why so many people believe what the mainstream media and government are telling them. Truly mind boggling. It’s like they have forgotten all the lies.

Here’s a short recap of what the media got wrong.

I don’t know what to say if people keep repeating things that aren’t true after the evidence of media manipulation has come out.

But when the sources of news keep getting things wrong, and all the errors lie in the exact same direction, and they are reluctant to acknowledge error, we have a problem. If you look back at the last few years, the record of errors, small and large, about major stories, is hard to deny. It’s as if the more Donald Trump accused the MSM of being “fake news” the more assiduously they tried to prove him right.

I am not defending Kyle for anything he did that night. I am exposing the media for their lies about it. I think he had no business being there armed or not. That is what cops are for. With a first aid kit maybe since many medics volunteer to help people injured at protests, but no one but cops should have been armed. That just leads to more violence and mayhem which is what happened.

@snoopydawg lit a bonfire across the street from me. Last year a gun enthusiast friend wanted me to buy a weapon that looked like a Schmeisser machine pistol. I declined. The night that BLM came I looked at the bonfire and wished I had bought it, or that I still had my old M-1 carbine that Illinois made illegal because I was using 20 round magazines. Ironically, I had bought it in college as army surplus from the DCM (Department of Civilian Marksmanship) at a cut rate. I suppose I was supposed to fend off a Russian invasion or something. But recoil was not bad. I taught myself to keep a steel plate in the air, firing from the hip. Used a lot of ammunition but DCM was selling that dirt cheap in Army canisters.

@Battle of Blair Mountain

*is* fake.

The populist movement, that started (I think) in 2013, with people lying down in traffic to call attention to racist murder, was not fake. Some of it probably remains, but, sadly, most of it got co-opted because some well-heeled dickface provided a lot of funding to start a non-profit called "Black Lives Matter," essentially stealing the name from the movement. Most of the people in the movement apparently assumed the non-profit was being operated in good faith, since the visible leaders were black people saying more or less the right things about black people getting murdered because they're black. But their actions demonstrate that they're nothing but another campaign arm of the Democratic party.

for information on the election in Nicaragua.

Election Fraud in Nicaragua: Where’s the Proof?

Official results from Nicaragua’s elections on November 7 showed Daniel Ortega re-elected as president with 75% of the vote. On the same day, President Joe Biden dismissed the ballot as a “pantomime election”[1] and within 48 hours the Organization of American States (OAS) had produced a 16-page report setting out its criticisms.[2] It demanded the annulment of the elections and the holding of new ones, disregarding international and OAS rules that require respect for the sovereignty of nations. Yet it contained no evidence of problems on election day itself that would substantiate its objections. Nevertheless, local and international media were quick to endorse the accusations that widespread fraud had taken place.

This article tries to identify the basis of these accusations, examines the evidence offered to support them and shows why, in practice, the massive fraud being alleged was very unlikely to have happened.
...
...For example, William Robinson, writing for NACLA, claims there was “a total absence of safeguards against fraud.”[5] The different critics make one or more of these accusations:

  1. That opponents who would have entered the election were prevented from running, and their participation would have secured Ortega’s defeat.
  2. That the size of the registered electorate was manipulated in the government’s favor.
  3. That polls showed that the government was deeply unpopular, therefore the election result must have been a fake.
  4. That the high proportion of spoiled ballots was a concerted “protest vote.”
  5. That, after the opposition called on its supporters to abstain, most people did so.
  6. That the government “added” one million votes in its favor.

Here we show the plentiful evidence to contest these allegations.

my immediate response was, "were the victims black". I googled and found out they were not. Then I dropped it until yesterday when I watched the Jimmy Dore piece with Matt, and read some commentary here.

Now I am reading your essay and wondering about the obvious level of regression that defines the verity of america's plight. At this point the legality of it all seems secondary to me. The reality of the situation, that any of this will reverse the state of things in favour of what is less regressive seems remote.

The US is the only country that demands the State proves guilt. I am thrilled with that, even if some trials result in apparent pre-conceived notions verdicts, due to media coverage prior to trial.
Not regressive that a defendant got a unanimous not-guilty verdict.
That is the hallmark, the best standard in the world for a fair trial in a criminal case. We are the the absolute best that ever was in history on the criminal case burden of proof. It is not regressive, it the very exemplar of a constitution and legal system that does the fairest, and best thing. We progressed in justice when we did that way back when the Constitution included it, and regression occurs if the burden is switched to the defense.
You don't like the verdict, and I thought they should have found a possible negligent homicide or assault, but they didn't, and the jury had the responsibility to determine if the state had sufficient evidence to support a conviction for anything charged, and they didn't.

@on the cusp assess the case that is presented to them each day in court, not the one the MSM is prosecuting outside.

Re lesser charges, it appears the judge did give jurors room to find against the defendant on lesser offenses, but once they all agreed he acted in self-defense that compromise option was closed.

And as someone here noted, WI's illegal firearm law was oddly written such that it would exclude the assault rifle Rittenhouse carried.

Looks like part of this outcome is on lawmakers in WI. Perhaps they can also find time to revisit their laws on carrying or conceal carry firearms, esp in large public gatherings.

I agree that the law on barrel length is goofy.
In Texas, you can carry a weapon to a protest, but can't at a sports event. So, you are safer at a baseball game than expressing your legal rights to protest.

We had a big argument about sentencing and specifically the death penalty.
But I am immensely relieved that you support the verdicts of free juries to differ from the MSM.
Protest is protest. When I was working in DC, I was personally inconvenienced by several protests, but supported their right to protest.
That does NOT include the right to burn and loot. That is chaos not protest. It is a threat to the liberty of all. When the protesting farmers drove over police vehicles (and police feet!) with their tractors they stopped being protesters and became a mob.
I, personally, don't know how any sane person can look at those videos that were presented to the jury and NOT come to the conclusion that he acted in self defense especially when WI law permitted him to be there.

I doubt if I personally would like Rittenhouse or his politics but A JURY TRIAL IS NOT ABOUT WHO THE JURY LIKES OR THEIR POLITICS. At least, it's not supposed to be.

One of the problems with the US gun love is most people didn't grow up going hunting, or being in the military. They take a short, hours long gun course, hit a target, and get their licenses.
They seldom come from a rural culture where gun safety is taught to every child and monitored until they are grown.

Many governments are vastly exceeding what their people want. China has been one of the worst (but by no means the only ones) for a long time. But several countries are even worse. The DPRK makes it a practice of arresting entire families (all three generations. associated with a person. Parents, the person and their siblings, and children. Then they all get punished. Most of those imprisoned n this way, Until fairly recently, typically for their entire lives, have no idea why their lives were ruined. All the people of the world need to speak up to stop this. Its now being done with digital tools, allowing the governments to have total control over what a person does. Thats the biggest danger of the cashless society governments are now pushing. Nomatter what country does it, its wrong.

Thanks to GATS governments are not supposed to subsidize highways since we have toll roads now. Which demand youto have cash to pay for them. But what if you are in debt? No travel until you get out of the hole?

Imagine being locked in a digital payments prison by a global digital payments system. You wont even be able to use roads, they wont let you pass without money in your account.

Well over 90% of the 1.4 billion people support their government.

China has been one of the worst (but by no means the only ones) for a long time. But several countries are even worse. The DPRK makes it a practice of arresting entire families (all three generations) associated with a person.

To equate China with the DPRK is absolute nonsense. The Chinese government has been EXTREMELY responsive to their citizen's needs for half a century. How else could the country raise 700 million out of poverty? In the US the very opposite has occurred.

The Chinese people willingly followed their government's program to deal with COVID-19 with very little dissent. As a result there have been just 98,467 cases with 4,636 deaths with a rate of 3/million. Compare to the US with 48,559,955 cases with 793,549 deaths for a death rate of 2,378/million. All this in a country with almost FOUR times the population.

China is not the US and the Chinese do not think like Americans. They put the welfare of their families, fellow citizens and country ahead of themselves personally. But that does not mean that there is no democracy in China. In fact I could make a case that China is actually more democratic than the two one party oligarchy that exists in the US. The fact is that the Chinese government fears the people instead of the fear US citizen's hold for theirs. Did you know that dozens of city executives were fired for not responding to the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in a timely manner?

Here is more information for you:

Propaganda War Against China To Eradicate Socialism

Anti-China propaganda is intended to indoctrinate Americans with fear and hatred and gain support for war against that country and against socialism itself.

Friends of Socialist China formed out of what we saw as a dire need to gather all information, original and otherwise, to counter the misinformation being spread about China. We didn’t include the word “socialist” in our title for gimmick or display but rather to send a firm message of respect and admiration to the Chinese people’s socialist path. In many ways, the propaganda war against China possesses a dual mission: the ramping up of a dangerous U.S.-led New Cold War against China and the demonization of the socialist mode of development.

The debate about propaganda in the West is generally confined to an idealistic framework of make-believe. Abstract concepts of “good” and “evil” fit comfortably within a capitalist order that privileges the profits of wealthier, mainly white individuals at the expense of the vast collective of humanity. Good and evil can be easily manipulated and repurposed to serve powerful actors within the Western media, political, and military industrial complex. For the first decade of the twenty-first century, “evil” was defined as terrorism. Any country that was labeled a harbor of terrorism became an instant target for war and regime change. Now these same neocon actors led by the United States tell us that China is the latest “evil” that the world should worry most about.
...
The propaganda war against China intentionally ignores history in an effort to satisfy the narrow interests of a minority of imperialist countries, mainly the United States. But history is our greatest tool for understanding the present, and history says that the U.S. and its imperialist allies in the West are guilty of the very crimes they misattribute to China. China has not committed anything that could be called a genocide in Xinjiang but the United States has committed several. This includes the near extermination of Indigenous nations which served as a material foundation for the development of the U.S. capitalist economy. China does not employ slave labor but slave labor was crucial to U.S. development. Prison labor, which has been compared to slavery, remains a major component of U.S. political economy.

Worse than hypocritical are claims of Chinese military aggression given that the United States spends more on its military than the next eleven countries combined and has been at war for more than 90 percent of its history. Preposterous characterizations of China’s political system as a repressive dictatorship which “covered up” the COVID-19 pandemic minimize the fact that the United States leads the world in COVID-19 cases and deaths and possesses a government that is increasingly mistrusted by majorities of its population and indeed much of the world . This just scratches the surface of the intense hypocrisy that plagues the U.S.-led propaganda war against China.
