bet its an issue with the scheduler, which I must admit I've not mastered.

Finally catching Nick's moisture. Been lightly raining/showers over night and this AM. Rain due the next several days. Cabbage, broccoli, collards, etc. are loving it. Pulled all but two tomato plants. Still have sweet potatoes to dig next month. Meanwhile, have peas and okra to continue picking. I grew a luffa sponge plant on the fence this year and it has been beautiful - full of blooms, bees, and fruit. Will have plenty of "sponges" to give away this winter. https://draxe.com/beauty/loofah-sponge/

Thanks for taking up the OT slack QMS!

Your gardening skills are amazing! Dawn is OK, she had a mishap with her thumb and is slightly discombobulated. She will be back next week. With luck Smile

A slight scheduling glitch today, so just threw this up. Working on the rototiller carburetor in the shop and planning a slow braised red cabbage dish, German style. Had a powerful lightening storm this AM which has left it cooler. So all is well here.

Look forward to your comments.

Geeze, the help these days.

Field Flowers sown after driveway placement. Sown mid July, now blooming. So much rain, at least 101 Centimeters since May 1st.

9/11 not only bore out predictions he had made, but his predictions about
where it would be used to take us have been (depressingly) prescient...

Posted on Youtube this week it was quickly removed.

Being right just doesn't count if you're off-narrative, it seems.

and it slipped slicing the meaty part of my left thumb under the knuckle. Too far from the heart to be fatal.

Used field Yarrow (chopped and boiled); local honey; soap and water; fresh curcuma; and if it isn't healing well. It's closed, itching (sign of healing) and pulling together with no infection so far.

I don't like making bone-headed mistakes like that.

We have some of the windows in the Green House as of today. And I have some tender Fall plants to put in our high German Raised beds. T-storms arriving soon, so not planting in yet.

QMS, if you have a good recipe, can you share? Also looking for a good natural sauerkraut recipe if anyone has one. Want the good bugs.

Thanks everyone.

Sauerkraut is all about lactobacilli. And it turns out that, if you have already have a nice healthy sourdough starter, you have a ready source for your personal favorite lactobacilli already (along with some yeasts, which matter less).

It's actually the lactobacilli that give sourdough bread its tang, not the yeast- a good starter has about 1000x the number of lactobacilli than it does yeasts. And the salt content in the sauerkraut brine suppresses the development of the yeast, and lets the lactobacilli go *nuts* on the sugars. So grab a favorite sauerkraut recipe, and kick it off by dropping in 1/4tsp of your sourdough starter when you start the fermentation. Put in just enough to seed the process, and give your favorite critters the unfair advantage.

No, really- try it and see how it goes. That gives you really good control over exactly which beasties are actually doing the work. And if you hate the result, ignore what I said...

My recipe doesn't call for thumb parts, so yours is probably better.
Sauteed onion, celery and apple slices (I use butter and olive oil)
in a dutch oven; red wine, apple cider vinegar and chicken broth
with the shredded cabbage. Slow cook in the oven for about an hour.

I make the sauerkraut two different ways. One is in a brine, the other with whey
and honey. Some like it sweet, some like it salty. Takes about a week on the counter
to do its thing. Then it lives in the refrigerator. Pickle many different veggies this way.

Good luck with the glass on the greenhouse. Have a story about that from years past.

took 2 hours, not one. Added some flour at the end to thicken the sauce.
Made a side of pork loin chops leftover from the barbie last night.
Waiting for the wife to get home before we pig out.

Hope your thumb is figuring out how to get it back together.

and without looking, assumed it was yesterday's. Accordingly, I threw together a substitute OT and then eventually noted that "yesterday's OT" was dated today, duh.

Sorry everybody.

Especially sorry for DM and her poor thumb.

@enhydra lutris It looked worse than it turned out to be. I can curl it but having trouble straightening it.

Used several natural healing herbs and remedies to help it heal and prevent infection. It seems to be working.

Thanks el. I'm posting pictures of our hacienda and family life in each thread. It's a good thing I didn't post another Open Thread.
