William Walker was an American "mercenary" who organized several private military expeditions into Latin America with the intention of establishing fiefdoms under his control. This specific type of brigandage and piracy was known as "filibustering" back then.  Today, we call it regime change, or humanitarian operations. It is also almost always state sponsored today, and, in particular, US sponsored. Though the CIA does continue to play a big role in such operations, the US is more and more willing to openly use its military. It does still use mercenary surrogates like Afghan Warlords, The Taliban, al quaeda/al nusra front, Blackwater/Xe/Acadami, and random insurgents ginned up by the CIA, but is quite comfortable openly sending in the armed forces whether it be boots on the ground or shelling, bombing, drone strikes and other forms of "stand off" terrorism.  At any rate, Walker managed to get control of Nicaragua for about a year (which is better that the CIA did at the Bay of Pigs) but he was, all the same, deposed and eventually captured and put to death.

and a happy day to the child in us all.

Three people that influenced me died on this date...
Socialist Helen Keller, Educator John Dewey, and folk musician Jean Ritchie....interesting.

They recently put a Bronze of Helen in the AL state capital. She also is featured on the AL quarter. If they only understood her politics I doubt they would...(4 min)

Most who've heard of Ms. Keller don't know her politics, though I guess there was a movie on her a while back that might have brought them up. I read Dewey in college, part of one of my majors, ya know. Jean Ritchie had a certain prominence, but only among a certain set. though Lomax brought her a wider distribution and greater prominence.

Thanks for the videos.

I almost tossed this version of it into the pot for this morning, but decided that having Slash on board confused the matter.

In the early 70s, back when Stay With Me was shooting to the top of the AM radio charts, I got tickets to go see the Faces in Wichita, Kansas. It was hours driving away from my home, but we didn't care then. Part of the adventure. Intended to take my old high school girlfriend, but that fell through and went with another female friend of mine ...she even drove her car, so good choice.

The show was a night show, outdoors, at the Wichita State University football stadium. Steppenwolf opened for the Faces, which was worth the price of admission right there. The Faces came out and were able to run through about half a dozen songs before the PA system totally failed. I mean nothing worked. They couldn't even announce that the PA had failed. Bummer for everyone.

People waited for a while as many attempts were made to rectify the situation. Eventually, it became clear that there was not going to be a fix. Everyone left. Well, almost everyone. Out of thousands of attendees, about 50 of us hung around. We had nothing better to do, since we had a long drive home ahead of us. We figured we'd just wait for the traffic to clear out and then go.

After about 45 minutes, while just a handful of us milled around, suddenly there were several loud electric POPs and all at once there were voices on the PA. A Faces member strolled out and tried the system. Working! So, what did the Faces do but come back on stage - with almost no one in the stands! They invited the few of us remaining to come up to the front, and we did. The proceeded to play the rest of the show, which might have been an hour. Frankly, I don't remember. I do remember that it was magical to have them right there in front of us, telling jokes and raising hell ...probably having more fun than we were! As you might expect, the last song was the mighty Circus Rock song, Stay With Me. I've been to a lot of rock and roll shows, but I never heard any group rock out as hard as the Faces did with that song on that night. They played like there was an audience of 50,000, yet it was just a few dozen. What a crew they were!

few other law enforcement types doing the right thing, and many clips of yet more violence and terrorism by yet more cops across the country. Looking to be a long hot summer if the police state cannot rein itself in and at least act half way civilized.

Barefoot Day." (according to my wall calendar) Biggrin

When is National Go Barefoot Day 2020?

June 1st

Soles 4 Souls institution - started the tradition of holding Go Barefoot Day with the purpose of prompting people to donate their neatly used footgear to those affected by the disaster. The project found a broad response among the folks. The contributions flew in such large amounts that the expected numbers were easily surpassed. Thus the members of Soles 4 Souls decided to continue the international collection of the footwear for the developing countries.

Very interesting milestones, today. Especially, Lizzie Borden, and Helen Keller--whose bio I always thought was so inspirational

And, this interesting tidbit,

2008 – A fire on the back lot of Universal Studios broke out, destroying a large irreplaceable archive of master tapes for music and film.

Don't know where you get all this info, but, as someone who loves to play Trivial Pursuit, I enjoy it. Pleasantry

Stay safe; be well.
