Millions lose their beloved private health insurance

I've been told repeatedly, over and over again, whenever a single-payer system was discussed, that the worst possible thing is for people to lose their beloved private health insurance. It's an almost unimaginable crime.
That is exactly what is happening right now, but for some mystifying reason the media isn't outraged.

mfa_1.PNG

Maybe it's because no one gets sick in this country unless its by choice.
Or maybe it's because health care is so affordable.

mfa2.PNG

Or maybe it's because there's no consequences for not having health insurance.

mfa3.PNG

I don't know.
But what I do know is that the free market will continue to keep the costs of private health insurance affordable.

A new analysis warning that U.S. health insurance companies could hike already exorbitant premiums by 40 percent or more next year amid the coronavirus pandemic was received by Medicare for All advocates as further confirmation that America's healthcare system—driven first and foremost by the profit motive—is ill-equipped to provide necessary care for all, particularly in a time of nationwide crisis.

I also know that only wackos support Medicare For All.

Since the coronavirus crisis began in earnest—since schools and businesses were shuttered across the nation, and sports seasons and concert tours and public events were canceled, and wildcat strikes took place, and major hospitals faced dire equipment shortages, and thousands began to sicken and die, and 10 million people became unemployed in two weeks—not a single major politician has stood up and said, “In light of all this, I now support Medicare For All.” Not a single Republican, of course. But also not a single prominent Democrat. On the contrary, the likely Democratic presidential nominee stood up two days ago and affirmed that he is still opposed to Medicare For All, because “it will not solve” this crisis “at all.” As horrific, unprecedented unemployment figures were released today, the most that Joe Biden could muster was a statement calling for open enrollment in Obamacare.

Americans, with no jobs and no money and the very real threat of imminent death, should be legally permitted to purchase bad and inadequate private health insurance that they cannot afford. That is the position of the party that represents the progressive side of American politics. The other party is just trying to source enough body bags.

because those media people (TV) is a bunch of rich dumbfucks who couldn't care less. They have enough money to pay whatever there is to pay.

I have never seen a country that is that cruel to its own people.

at insurance companies? Wasn't that their concern if we went to single payer? The longer this epidemic and shutdown goes on the better chance of Bernie's winning. Well except for how the democrats will cheat anyway. Anyone seeing any Biden yard signs or bumper stickers? Got contacted by someone from his campaign or any of the usual things we see during elections? Funny how Biden didn't spend money or actually campaign in the states he won isn't it?

"I understand the appeal of Medicare for All," Biden said in a video posted Monday morning. "But folks supporting it should be clear that it means getting rid of Obamacare. And I'm not for that."

Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.

@Pricknick that literally makes no difference in electoral politics at the national level (black Americans who would view any attempt at repealing something Obama did as a slight against the first black POTUS), and to his donor base (wealthy individuals who prefer to status quo in basically everything).

There are plenty of black Americans who don't think Obamacare is worth keeping if it can be replaced with something better (which isn't all that hard), but they trend younger and aren't in Biden's demographic anyway.

With our politicians acting as they are now, this part of John Kennedy's 1962 speech comes to mind:

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."

@polkageist mildly I think our owners want violence, as Hedges always says, they're ready for that. More than ready, they plan on it. Unfortunately they themselves won't be the victims of it either.

@lizzyh7 I've said it before, I'll say it again:

Violence in the street is not the answer. Targeted assassinations and kidnappings are.

Remember how, immediately after 9/11, the term "asymmetrical warfare" was being bandied about - then just a couple years later, all mention of such just vanished?

that the 99% won't have to stoop to the oligarch's level. i hope that strikes and sabotage (against property) will suffice. after all, the oligarchs value money and property over blood and flesh - no doubt including that of members of their own class.

having, while watching the news, a cartoon thought balloon appear over one’s head that says, “Where is the RAF (the Red Army Faction / the Baader-Meinhof Gang) now, when we really need them?”

Targeted assassinations and kidnappings

Whereas what passes for Left and Green in Germany nowadays is too bought-off to take on capitalism and imperialism anymore, and consoles itself by vandalizing AfD supporters’ property and getting people (like singer Xavier Naidoo, who himself is a person of color) fired (typically, for expressing themselves in ways deemed politically incorrect).

It doesn’t matter how advantaged or disadvantaged or how educated or ignorant. It only matters that I got mine, fuck you, you don’t.

Any guesses how many will notice? Even those who don’t have it? A giant asteroid would have been quicker, merciful, to the US.

The best idea I can think of is to band together with friends, neighbors, and family who you think you can trust and work together to stay healthy and alive. We’re on the verge of seeing how fragile this modern world is.

Employer-provided plans typically have open enrollment in the Autumn for coverage beginning at the beginning of the following year.

If Democrats fail to run on M4A. President Trump could back something similar -- just as people are waking-up to the reality of increased costs for their private insurance.

That could easily catapult him to another four years.
