A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.”
The barber holds a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then asks the boy, “Which do you want?” The boy picks the quarters. The barber hands them to him and he leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!”

the barber often proves to customers how smart he is and how dumb the kid is. Often.

This story was from a time when
Quarters actually contained silver. The barber repeated the demonstration every time the boy came in for a haircut.
The boy got a 50 cent discount and something of intrinsic value every time.
The day he chose the dollar would have been the boy’s last discount..

Growing up poor
(1948 ⟶ ) with the parents I had this and other songs helped radicalize me. (I was that kid.) I listened and I learned.
By the time "Lady Sings the Blues" appeared it was a coda to the "early life" journey. The rest just flowed from that grounding in Reality.
