Friday Night Photos - Piano Concerto edition

Just referring to the fact that I'm listening to the first movement of Ludomir Rozycki's 2nd piano concerto.

Anyway, here's a lonely canal. Rather suits my mood.

Other than that, I've got nothing, aside from the prospect of a nice lamb vindaloo. Some like it hot. Me included, although the appearance of the Polar Vortex next week isn't so yummy.

I looked up lamb vindaloo. It looks good. If I was any kind of a cook I'd try to make some. But I'm no cook.

The Woz. They didn't play Ludomir Rozycki's 2nd piano concerto, but they put on a good show.

When I offer to wash your back in the shower, all you have to say is yes or no.
Not all this "who are you, and how did you get in here?" nonsense.

Thank you for posting tonight, and I hope the heat of the vindaloo warms your spirit and tummy.

The mulch got laid today with the help of a friend’s son. He did the heavy work of wheelbarrowing endless loads of mulch, while I did the easy part of raking it around. I’m pleasantly exhausted.

It’s predicted that within the next hour the weather will shift from hot and dry to thunderstorms and hail. The strong, cooling winds all day made the work more comfortable, but we do need the rain. I’ve shifted the young Plumeria in pots to safer ground, just in case. I hope the young veggies in the ground don’t get too battered.

I'll go find the piano concerto while you enjoy dinner.

Just for fun …

@janis b

His first piano concerto is late romantic drivel, and his second is something with a bit of Rachmaninov bolted on at various places to help save it.

It's a birthday present I was attempting.

Cool pic BR! I bet the birding is good along that canal.

This is one of those where's waldo pix, fer grownups. Actually bird watching is the world's greatest where's waldo game ever. And it is about real shit, in nature.

This was my great find of the week as they are kinda rare where I am. Can you see it?

A colloquial hunters/sportsmen name in some parts of the country is Timberdoodle. My nom for best hunter's bird name ever. One of the most amazing birds in America, a woodland shorebird of the forest. It has special primaries which whistle like a dove when they fly. They have an aerial flight display that is pretty spiffy too.

OK, here is what you are looking for

@janis b thanks for the neat vids Janis! Whaddabird. If those are the Plumeria I know it is one of the sweetest smelling flowers there is... Ours was from Hawai'i as I recall.

@dystopian

that I am trying Plumeria out. Yes, it is the sweet smelling flower that grows in Hawaii, and used in leis. These two young plants were given to me by a friend who lived for a few decades in Tuvalu, islands in Polynesia. I’ll let you know how they progress here in my corner of NZ. I am hopeful they will survive and look forward to their intoxicating fragrance.

Here's a shot taken Wednesday of a snow capped peak (Mt. Lemmon) in the Catalina Mountains just outside Tucson AZ. Ski season is rapidly approaching.

And this is the ready to pick Pima cotton crop at a farm about 4 miles from my house. Pima cotton was developed from Egyptian cotton and is equal in quality. The US government paid members of the Pima Indian tribe, from which the cotton and my county get their name, to grow the crop starting in the early 1900s.

I found all these warnings against items advertised as bamboo fabric that are actually just made of rayon, where the cellulose used to make the rayon came from bamboo.

CB's picture

@lotlizard
Rayon is made from regenerated naturally occurring cellulose. It was originally developed in 1880 as a replacement for silk.

How is Bamboo Textile Fibre made?

BT “Kitchen Chemistry” Video Demonstration

We have produced a video to give you a fair idea of how bamboo fibre, or bamboo rayon is made.

The demonstration shows not exactly how it is made commercially, because that takes much more time, but the principles are much the same.

  1. Isolating the cellulose from bamboo
  2. Dissolving the cellulose
  3. Regenerating the cellulose to form rayon (or viscose, which is another term for the same thing).

We have named the video “Kitchen Chemistry” because the substances involved are almost as tame as those used in everyday kitchens and households.

Hemp is actually more environmentally friendly than bamboo and even cotton. Unfortunately, the fact that cotton is produced in such massive quantities, the vested interests kept hemp fabric production down.

The ban in the US due to it's psychotropic characteristics was just a canard created by the cotton growers and mill owners to protect their financial interests. Hemp grown for this purpose actually has reduced cannabinoids making it unsuitable for it's psychotropic effects.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbjHOBJzhb0]

Hemp actually produces a superb fiber for weaving - it has better overall properties and it is stronger with much better wearing characteristics. TPTB don't want that shirt, dress or bed sheet to last too long. It would effectively reduce sales by half or greater.
