Monday Open Thread: February 4 is Rosa Parks Day (California and Missouri)

February 4 is the 35th day of the year
It is also Setting Orange, Chaos 35, 3185 YOLD (discordian)
And let us not forget 13.0.6.3.16 by the Mayan Long Count

Black History Month

Since it is the fourth, we'll divert ourselves with a problem involving 4. Specifically, the problem will involve four 4s. So, here we go:

Twenty years of schooling and they put you on the day shift, look out kid, ...

On this day in history:

1555 – John Rogers was burned at the stake for being protestant. Though much is made of him being the first such martyr under Queen Mary, he previously spoke approvingly when the protestants burned one of their own for heresy. Ah well.
1703 – Forty-Six of the legendary Forty-seven Ronin committed seppuku
1789 – George Washington was elected the first President of the United States
1801 – John Marshall was sworn in as Chief Justice of the United States. This was a BFD.
1861 – Delegates from six former U.S. states formed the Confederate States of America.
1899 – The US war on the Philippine people began with the Battle of Manila.
1945 – World War II: The Yalta Conference began.
1961 – The Angolan War of Independence and the greater Portuguese Colonial War began.
1999 – Amadou Diallo was murdered by New York City plainclothes officers, Sean Carroll, Richard Murphy, Edward McMellon and Kenneth Boss, who fired at him 41 times, hitting him with 19 shots. They claimed that they had thought that he was a rape suspect from a year earlier and, of course, got off, because that's what cops are supposed to do when they think that they see somebody that they once suspected of something, slaughter them.

Born this day in:

1818 – Emperor Norton, emperor of the US and protector of Mexico
1868 – Constance Markievicz, politician, nationalist, revolutionary, socialist, and suffragette
1875 – Ludwig Prandtl, physicist and engineer
1902 – Charles Lindbergh, pilot and explorer
1906 – Clyde Tombaugh, astronomer who discovered Pluto
1913 – Rosa Parks, civil rights activist
1921 – Betty Friedan, author and feminist
1936 – Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival
1941 – John Steel, drummer
1944 – Florence LaRue, singer and actress
1948 – Alice Cooper, singer, songwriter and student
1951 – Phil Ehart, drummer and songwriter

Died this day in:

1968 – Neal Cassady, novelist and poet
1975 – Louis Jordan, singer, songwriter and saxophonist
1983 – Karen Carpenter, singer
1987 – Liberace, singer, songwriter and pianist
2006 – Betty Friedan, author and activist
2007 – Barbara McNair, singer and actress
2013 – Donald Byrd, trumpet player
2013 – Reg Presley, singer and songwriter

Been a little under the weather, but fortunately doesn't look like school is cancelled here in Portland, so at least there's that.

Going to do a little writing this morning, Then try to get out of the house for a bit. Don't know where I'm going, but I'm leaving my cell phone. It's amazing really how freeing that is. Just go for a walk and leave it at home. I used to live that way before I was ordered to keep one. I miss it, and like it. One step at a time.

"I wear the chain I forged in life,” replied the Ghost. “I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it."

or without a cell 'phone. I have an odd love-hate relationship with mine. which mostly sits hee on my desk, turned off, and which I often forget when I shouldn't. We originally got one and later one each as tools and that is still how I see it. I alternatively get exuberant about getting the maximum utility out of it and using it for everything and pretty much ignoring or forgetting about it. The next few weeks will see all of my routines chewed up, so maybe all of my interactions with the phone, tablet and desk-top will change then too.

Have a good one.

Rosa was a seamstress for my political mentors....they bailed her out of jail and helped develop the boycott. Mr E. D. Nixon was a pivotal figure. He was a Pullman porter and the local yokels couldn't impact his work and salary like they did so many others.

Nixon sought help from civil-rights attorney Clifford Durr and his wife Virginia to gain information about the arrest and accompany him to post bail for Parks. Nixon put his house up as bond collateral for her release.

@Lookout
with some great early influences. Thanks for the information on Mr. Nixon - I'll have to look further into him and try to use him in a column. I see that he dies on 2/25 - a Monday, so maybe then.

Have a great one.

outside; was up early out and about dealing with car issues; have physical therapy on the hip and spine this afternoon, so i'll get out again.

Sorry i missed replying to you and everyone on Saturday; appreciated all the comments and good info about the Beatles, and your note about the importance of recalling significant events in modern history like the Greensboro sit-in.

Hoping you and everyone have a wonderful day and week.

if you're dealing with car issues. I really hate doing that in the rain (or worse). Have a good PT session and take care of yourself.

For those stories I come here and ALWAYS learn something out of it. Thank you, lookout. It took til 2001 to recognize Nixon's life-long activism and achievements.

I can only hope, next time around, people, historians. educators and the press would be more careful to listen and think faster.

Wishing you health test results that give you hope. Be well.

I too:

but I don't find the prospects very bright, especially with the thinly disguised propaganda mills we've got for media these days.

enhydra lutris's picture

@GreatLakeSailor of the door due to the cold? That's amazing if that's what it is. Regardless of that, 66 degrees is an amazing temperature swing. As I write that, I now wonder how often we get such swings out in the desert. The desert doesn't retain heat worth shit, and with a clear "high sky", night time temps can drop into the mid and low thirties (F), which isn't that cold, but then the day time temps can easily soar past the nineties and on up through the 100s.

Contraction due to the cold. Plastic has a fairly high coefficient of thermal expansion so really shows the cold.

before her, "nobody" had heard of anorexia ("nobody" meaning, only the families who had actually faced it.).

the astonishing mystery of it, that someone so incomprehensibly talented and successful, someone in showbiz not completely fucked up with drugs and/or alcohol, could and would simply starve herself to death ... it's as confounding now as it was 36 years ago.

check out this compilation of her serious drum skillz:

Louis Armstrong & Mahalia Jackson - Just A Closer Walk With Thee - 7/10/1970

Yesterday we put on rain gear and walked the dawg along the river in the pouring rain, it was great. Lots of birds and no people. Squirrels! The storm did not bother her at all, but squirrels give her a panic attack. Chaotic energy is wild, can be fun. cheers

wonderful walks in the rain ourselves. Good rain gear really helps one enjoy life more fully.

Thanks for the well wishes. My labs are mundane, simply verifying that I am fit for surgery tomorrow - Kaiser is hyper cautious in that regard. They have a whole pre-op regimen for the patient too culminating in an 8 hour fast and cessation of even clear liquids for the last part of it followed by timed consumption of a carbo-loaded hydration liquid about 2 hours pre intake. Allegedly this, plus about 3 pages worth of other steps has been shown to enhance recoveries and minimize complications, and this is all for a quasi-routine outpatient surgery. I'd hate to think what they do for something like a bypass. Wink

but it is at least partly a cultural affliction, I'm sure. I thought about featuring her drum skills, but I put this, and everything up through this Wednesday together in something of a hurried blitz way back in mid-January, and searching you tube for the perfect clip really adds the hours to cranking one of these out, so I took the easy way out after a couple of promising videos turned out to be serious meh.

@enhydra lutris
to being forced by her record company to give up her drumming role and step up front to sing standing at the mike in a traditional chanteuse role -- one that she was never comfortable with, and that did not accommodate her number one artistic calling.

Supposedly she was regaining weight when her heart failed -- possibly because doctors then didn't really know enough about how to safely manage the physiology of recovering from anorexia.

It would make an extraordinary tragic jazz/pop/rock opera or musical, if anyone could be made to write it. Paul Williams comes to mind. He's still out there touring.

Margaret Burroughs print.jpg

rosa and ed nixon made me think of my visit to the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago. They now have an exhibit by Margaret Burroughs, a co-founder of the museum. met her during my women caucus days. she gave me one of her prints. I was too young and too overwhelmed to realize what a privilege that was at the time.

https://www.dusablemuseum.org/exhibits/south-side-stories-the-art-and-in...

This exhibition explores influential Chicago artist and cultural leader Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs’s legacy as an artist, creator, activist and institution builder. It gives a nuanced illustration of how her legacy influenced artists, activists, and cultural awareness on Chicago’s South Side and beyond between 1960 and 1980.
By turning a lens onto her life’s work this exhibition demonstrates an understanding of her ethos, interests, art –and how her work continues to inspire.

South Side Stories: The Art and Influence of Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, 1960–1980 is part of Art Design Chicago, an initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art exploring Chicago’s art and design legacy, with presenting partner The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.

The Art & Influence of Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, 1960-1980 is presented in partnership with the Smart Museum of Art as part of South Side Stories and is presented concurrently with the Smart’s exhibition The Time is Now! Art Worlds of Chicago’s South Side, 1960-1980.

@UntimelyRippd Is that the Transport Police would quietly, without fuss if possible, escorted her off the bus or train. Then they would have immediately issued a citation. If in the process of such removal she offered any resistance, they would take all steps necessary to ensure compliance in accordance with procedure.

And nothing would change, even if it was caught on tape, because the pigs followed procedure which was set up by a citizen's review board, and the grand jury would refuse to convict, and the supreme court would claim that since she was not representing anyone other than herself, she would have no standing to sue.

The protests would be labeled illegal, and allegations would be made with regards to rape allegations at some of them, as well as statements that might be considered homophobic. The fact that Reverend King is part of a denomination which preaches intolerance also causes his statements to be called into question.

What we really need to be asking ourselves as Americans, the media would be saying, is why did she want to disrespect the disabled by refusing to get up from her seat?
