Midnight Special - Mother should I run for President?

Damn man. Is it even possible? Can we stop these fuckers? Or are we all just dust in the wind? Is hope just another four letter word? Face it, we're hooked on illusions. Illusions created by those we theoretically are supposed to trust, i.e., those that make all the decisions for the rest of us. That's why we let them make all the decisions isn't it, because we trust them? If not, why do we let them do that?

That's what this country is all about, the "founders", like a M. Night Shyamalan movie, "The Founders". At the beginning, the founders made the decisions and from then on and forever founder descendants, i.e. future rich people, will make future decisions. And the people will trust them because they must, the founders have already decided.

A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.

@divineorder Not sure who Beto is but wish him and his family all the best. Funny how I miss out on all these new politicians. Or are they really new?

@Big Al Beto represents El Paso. Third term in congress. jb and I sent him some money when he first ran as one of the new progressives back then. Was disappointed that during his first term Israel brought him on a junket.

On military spending he sucks like most of em.

https://medium.com/@RepBetoORourke/defense-bill-recap-238e70978268

I voted yes on the final bill because it makes some really important investments in our national defense — supporting our service members and their families, funding important training and equipment for our troops, giving our military a pay increase, and supporting Fort Bliss. From here, the Senate will pass its version of the NDAA, and then a conference committee will work to reach a consensus agreement that we can send to the President to be signed into law.

O'Rourke has stood up well to Cruz, who has got to be as bad as Trump in his own right.

But a vote for Beto is def LOTE voting. No cigar.

@divineorder @divineorder
give it to another candidate.

Didn't Bernie turn his leftover money to Hillary or the DNC? Someone please tell me.

I know in 2000 I sent $50 to McCain to stop Bush and when he conceded he gave all ghis leftover money to Bush!

They should return unused money or give it to a non-political charity (NOT the Clinton Foundation which is just a graft machine).

I thought that's why a class action lawsuit was filed. It was not my understanding that Bernie "gave" away his donations, but I could be completely wrong. Seems like Her also usurped donations meant for down ballot races as well.

Can someone in the know please help us remember the facts on the shell game of donations to Bernie and down ballot dems in 2016?

Do not vote. For anyone. At all. Tell all your friends not to vote for anyone. Join the hundreds of millions of Americans who refuse to participate in the simulation of democracy. Take time off from work to vote, and then do not vote. Go see a movie, or have lunch with someone you haven’t seen in a while, or take a nice, long walk in the woods or something. Whatever you do, do not vote. Seriously. Please stop voting for these people. They’re not your friends. They mean you ill. They will shake your hand, kiss your baby, then sell you to the first pharmaceutical lobbyist, or military industrial lobbyist, or Israeli or Saudi Arabian lobbyist, that waltzes into their office with a check, or that threatens to turn their voters against them.

You probably think I’m kidding. I’m not. Do not vote in these midterm elections. Or in any other American elections. Not while the system remains as it is. If you really want to vote, move to Europe, where at least there are still parliamentary structures, and a decent variety of political parties, and some restrictions on campaign financing and advertising. All you’re doing when you vote in America is reifying a simulation of democracy, and so perpetuating the system as it is.

@lotlizard

"In 1956, I shall not go to the polls. I have not registered. I believe that democracy has so far disappeared in the United States that no “two evils” exist. There is but one evil party with two names, and it will be elected despite all I can do or say. There is no third party. On the Presidential ballot in a few states (seventeen in 1952), a “Socialist” Party will appear. Few will hear its appeal because it will have almost no opportunity to take part in the campaign and explain its platform. If a voter organizes or advocates a real third-party movement, he may be accused of seeking to overthrow this government by “force and violence.”

"Is the refusal to vote in this phony election a counsel of despair? No, it is dogged hope. It is hope that if twenty-five million voters refrain from voting in 1956 because of their own accord and not because of a sly wink from Khrushchev, this might make the American people ask how much longer this dumb farce can proceed without even a whimper of protest."

@Big Al I live in Washington State so there are direct democracy options on the ballot where I can actually participate in some semblance of democracy and make decisions along with my fellow citizens, instead of having the oligarchy make all the decisions for us.

As for representatives, I noticed Chomsky coming out lately saying people should have voted for Clinton because she's not as bad as Trump and that people should get out and vote for democrats this election because the republicans are fucking crazy. The republicans are fucking crazy and it's very tempting for me to vote for a dem in this next election against the republican 4 term congress person here in my district who is really terrible. But as Dubois said and the article you posted indicate, how are we ever going to change this system if we simply keep participating.

I do disagree with the author of that article that parliamentary systems are better. It sure isn't working out any better. Different systems, same results. We need to look at direct democracy in this country.

@Big Al

if you want a knife in the back or a sharp stick in the eye. If the GOP maintains a majority in the House and Senate, McConnell has already said he will cut Social Security and Medicare to pay for the tax cuts deficit. IF the Dems win, we stand a chance of stopping them from doing the same.

@dkmich I think Obama proved that. That's the problem, both parties are completely beholden to the corporate oligarchy, the ruling class. As always. It's like with health care, the dems are not going to support a nationalized socialist health care system. The only way for these kind of changes is to change this political system to give the actual decision power to the people. Even if the dems regain a congressional majority, there's no guarantee the same attack on social programs won't continue.
This is all scripted. The debt, the deficit, the two parties, we knew it would come to this point. Elections are not going to solve the problem.

Otherwise the message you send is apathy. Turn in a blank ballot or write in DuBois or Sanders or Mickey Mouse. That sends a message. If you don't vote or register, the message you send is that you don't care.

Also, there may be down ballot people that deserve your vote. In Cook County IL, there are four Greens running for the Water Reclamation board. Vote for them and ignore the rest of the ballot. That sends an even better message.

. . . with the machines, any ballot can be altered or at least during the tabulation phase can be made to say whatever The Wizard wants it to say.

No thanks!

Voting by mail is on paper too.
Totally agree about the machines. That's why (among other reasons) that I don't vote early. Request a vote by mail ballot aka absentee ballot.

Machine voting early is for people who always vote their county's predominant party.

@The Voice In the Wilderness If people don't vote the ruling class will think they're apathetic? I'm not sure why that matters. The message that has to be sent is that we do not live in a democracy and our political system does not deliver it therefore we need something else. That can only be done like any other thing the peasant class wants, through organization. The organization will send the message.
Voting green or third party, while certainly better than voting for the duopoly, won't change anything at this point. The system is built to prevent any third party progress.

Until we at least have Bolivian-style vote counting. Paper ballot, counted in public, on site at each polling place. Add to that -- live stream video of counting and tabulation.

Until then, I'm done.

Pipedream would be to limit campaign coffers and spending to some ridiculously low amount, and allowing anyone to run regardless of party affiliation -- even, and especially, the partyless.

as my Dutch friend likes to remind me. One of history’s little ironies.

https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorgverzekering_%28Nederland%29

Translation:

It was not a Dutch government but rather the German occupiers who eventually introduced a general and compulsory health insurance fund. In 1941 they passed the sickness fund decree, mandating membership in the fund for all employees under a certain wage limit (the sickness fund income cutoff). The health insurance fund was based on the German Krankenkasse.

Interestingly, the equivalent English Wikipedia article fails to mention this fact.

I think you should run for president. You have some things the Americans like. You are a veteran. You have a Manly name: Big Al. You have a platform. Why not? At the very least you could haul in some dollars, like the Paul grifters.

Start a foundation while you're campaigning. If you have an aversion to money you could use the proceeds to start an uncensored website.

OT, why is it so hard for people to start something like facebook that protects prvacy and, with the exception of pornagraphy and violence, does no censoring?

for Americans to realize that the president, supreme court, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Hilary Clinton, Mitch McConnell and the ghost of John McCain doesn't give a fuck about people like us. All they want is our vote, then we can all go eat shit and die. Stay out of it? No net loss to either side. Vote for someone you believe in? They'll do what the party allows them do. They have no fear of us.

Just returned from lunch with my mother. I so wish she would read. I so wish I could quickly summarize all that I've come to realize about the entire farce of our alleged electoral system in the last two years, in an easy-to-understand little package for her, especially. I can't.

Hell, at this blog, the very place I learned it all (or at least saw the links to the places where I read more), there is a large percentage of folks who apparently still think that their votes not only count, but that one of the only two parties is somehow better than the other. Mind boggling.

She, like so many, wholeheartedly believes that all "Ds" are evil socialists who are hell-bent on destroying our country, and all "Rs" are heroes, whom, if just given the chance, will save not only us and our country, but the world.

Switch the D and R around, and you have the message of many here, and other left-leaning places. Same shit, different party. Parrots -- on and for both "sides", imo.

"We need your votes. If the [fill in the evil letter of your choosing] win, . . ."

Fascist, socialist, Rethug, Libtard, Pigs. When I read those types of labels, I move on, generally. "If you don't vote, you're voting for [evil R or evil D]". Is there some memory hole in 99% of people where knowledge of past history and facts go to die, so the My Side Good/Other Side Bad brainwashed bots can continue perpetuating the simulation game of life as Exceptional Americans without skipping a beat?
