Democratic Pin-up girl! Alexsandria Ocasio-Cortez: who is she really?

The wide-eyed wonder of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when talking or public speaking yields inconveniently slanted reportage. On the right, the current line that AOC can't put together a decent sentence. This is nonsense. Whatever one may think of her policies, most all of them are or were Progressive. Campaigning for progressives by AOC did not yield any benefit. But I wonder about the districts in which she campaigned. Probably in similar districts, in which she did not campaign, the success ratio may have been the same.

I disagree with abolishment of ICE. Put what else in place? Yet I concur almost 100% with her platform. Aspects not sufficiently promoted are, concentrating deeply into the subject--"What are your stances on social benefit versus armaments on another?" The nice thing is that this is a cleanly worded question, capable of simple answers. The answer duration time is directly equal to its real truth content.

Without a plethora of knowledge of her, the rest mainly acquired by some YouTube or Fox video clips, this still needs to be said:

John McCain dies, belatedly. AOK eulogizes him in a tweet. Question: can a public electronic message (and therefore immortal) be considered funereal?

https://twitter.com/Ocasio2018/status/1033538876370046977

US House candidate, NY-14
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Retweeted Washington Post

John McCain’s legacy represents an unparalleled example of human decency and American service. As an intern, I learned a lot about the power of humanity in government through his deep friendship with Sen. Kennedy. He meant so much, to so many. My prayers are with his family.

Here is the essential challenge she made

Regardless of ideology there are matters of science, empathy (social science) which are beyond dispute. One adopts principles because...reasons. Once there upon attempting to enter political life one should develop a program for action. Or a vision of the future. This message should be clear as enunciated to the public, especially during an electoral campaign. The political stance adopted by here is unknown.

Does AOC really adhere to the beliefs so stated during and after her campaign. Does she really have a tough-minded approach to progressivism? So, how interpret this dilemma: a puzzle with a pair of incontrovertible evidential aspects--she has real respect for a cheat and liar OR she lied

Conclusion: AOK is actually a war-mongerer...or...a hypocrite who seems unapologetic for this eulogaic comment.

I am sick of Bullshit. Isn't she really so malleable now will later contort without resistance. This thought isn't mine: Is not she being pushed up the success ladder in an Obama-like manner. In a Hopey-Changy like scam? Are any going to say anything about the depth of her proffered opinions? I'm not. Couldn't vote for her if I could.

And that she came out of nowhere ...

Am I missing something about her history? When did she do that?

Is not she being pushed up the success ladder in an Obama-like manner. In a Hopey-Changy like scam?

If she had been an intern and not just a "bartender" as we've been told then yes she is a Hopey-Changy scam sequel .

Update:

Thanks for those who let me know her history. I haven't been paying much attention to her.

Early Life and Education

Born to a working-class Puerto Rican family in the Bronx, New York, Ocasio-Cortez graduated from Boston University, majoring in economics and international relations, and later worked for Senator Ted Kennedy's office where she focused on immigration issues.

After graduation, she returned home and became a community organizer. However, with the recession taking hold, along with the financial issues her family faced after her father's death in 2008 from cancer, Ocasio-Cortez took multiple low-wage restaurant jobs to help keep them afloat.

She did work as a bartender and waitress, but that certainly wasn’t the whole story. Interesting part is, this isn’t new info, I read it shortly after she won the primary. But it’s funny how her early political ambitions and involvement with the dem party have been erased from almost all media coverage. She’s now considered an outsider socialist bartender, who came up right outta nowhere! Heh.

@snoopydawg she was an intern in "the immigration office of Senator Ted Kennedy" while she was in college. This seems odd because I did not know that senators had immigration offices. She is a high achiever and has an asteroid named after her resulting from a second place finish in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, but I don't see much evidence that she is being pushed up the ladder. She did work as a bartender and as an organizer for Bernie Sanders. She is not just a bartender that was fed up and decided to run for office. She is a smart and ambitious woman who tended bar to make money while she engaged in political activity, but, aside from the adulation of war monger McCain, her heart seems to be in the right place. All that being said, some progressives seem to want to make a messiah our of her. She is young, naive about some things and she will screw up at times, but I really don't think she is an Obama.

According to this, she was also an intern to Ted Kennedy. It might have contributed to her current perspective on politics.

In many ways it is naturally human to reach for the ideal. She may be a current incarnation of that ideal; but if we continue, in our legitimate cynicism to squash anything for not being perfect, are we not also defeating any momentum for possibility? This is a legitimate question in my mind.

She'll do what she's told and be a pretty face that does nothing, kind of like Herrera-Beutler (R) here in my district (WA-03). When she was trumpeted in here as the next great progressive hero antiwar socialist I about gagged. It didn't take much research to see what the deal was but she said some pretty things which is all it takes. Even the fabled Caitlin Johnstone called her "antiwar", which is another story about Johnstone.
The real bottom line, like it was with Sanders for prez, is she's a DEMOCRATIC PARTY politician. The amount of attention being paid to a 28 year old who doesn't know shit and is clearly a centrist lefty is pretty amazing but people keep falling for it so why not.

The system is the problem, even if a candidate starts out with good intentions. Once within the system, they are given the "talk" and are expected to toe the line within very narrow parameters. The only place anyone is allowed to deviate from the corporate line is when it costs the oligarchs nothing. That means the difference is extremely narrow and limited mostly to identity issues.

I have posted here and at the other place on numerous occasions that real change does not come from the politicians. They are guardians of the status quo and of the oligarchy.

AOC may not be the best judge of character, but she is probably a lot less brain damaged, so there is that. And, she is doing the hard work of normalizing Socialism, just as Albert Einstein did when he realized that democracy was hopeless in America. That's worth something.

After her free junket to Israel and her first blush of lobbyist money, she'll probably turn. They all do.

@gulfgal98

Trump was elected.

WHAT IF JOHN MCCAIN hadn’t run for president in 2008? Donald Trump might not be sitting in the White House today.
----
Remember: McCain introduced the loathsome Palin to the world in August 2008, when he plucked her from Alaskan obscurity and made her his running mate. In doing so, he granted prestige, influence, and credibility to a know-nothing demagogue and conspiracy theorist; a woman who thrived on racial and cultural resentment and would later become a leading figure in both the tea party and the “birther” movement. Sound familiar? Palin, as the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank wrote in 2016, was “politically, the Mother of Trump.”

As even Nicolle Wallace, MSNBC host and former adviser to McCain, conceded during the 2016 campaign: “Mr. Trump is riding the wave of anxiety that Ms. Palin first gave voice to as Senator John McCain’s running mate. Mr. Trump has now usurped and vastly expanded upon Ms. Palin’s constituency, but the connection between the two movements is undeniable.”
----
It’s easy, though, to blame all of the Trumpish campaign of 2008 on the former governor of Alaska. It was McCain, however, who unleashed and empowered her — and failed to restrain or rebuke her as she incited angry crowds against Obama. “The growing furor in the Republican Party was something that we, as a campaign, failed to address,” admitted Wallace. And, while it was Palin who shamelessly accused Obama of “palling around with terrorists” and dog-whistled to rally-goers that the black Democrat wasn’t “a man who sees America the way you and I see America,” it was McCain who spent much of the days and weeks before the election trying to tie Obama to his former acquaintance, Bill Ayers, the co-founder of a Vietnam War-era militant group. It was McCain who authorized his campaign spokesperson to remind reporters of “Barack Obama’s long association with a domestic terrorist.” The spokesperson added, “The American people know radical when they hear it, and John McCain is not the candidate in this election they should be concerned about.”

You think shouting “lock her up” and “CNN sucks” at Trump rallies is bad? McCain-Palin rallies in 2008 featured Republican supporters in the audience shouting “Traitor!”, “Terrorist!”, “Off with his head!”, and “Kill him!” at the mere mention of Obama’s name. “Watch the tape of the guy screaming, ‘He’s a terrorist!’ McCain seems to shudder at that, he rolls his eyes … and I thought for a moment he’d admonish the man. But he didn’t,” wrote Joe Klein in Time magazine on October 9, 2008. “True enough: he no longer has his honor. But we are on the edge of some real serious craziness here and it would be nice if McCain did the right thing and told his more bloodthirsty supporters to go home and take a cold shower. But McCain hasn’t done the right thing all year.”

I can't disagree with that, but I still think that if Obama had tried doing the job people elected him to do then Hillary probably would have won.

AOC's campaign sounds like a classic Obama operation - take an attractive, young, of color candidate, parrot progressive messaging on the domestic side, ride the fence on foreign policy, toss in some well strategized media, and stir.

Getting airtime on Colbert right before primary day was the big tip off for me.

That just doesn't happen unless the fix is in.

Dude (I assume you are a dude) . . . I was sad to see that term in your title . . . especially in the ranks of all of your excellent essays.

There are candidates here in Texas that I will vote for, whom I consider to be pretty good on most progressive issues. However, I don't know if any of them are where I want them to be on everything. None of them are anti-war enough for my taste.

But what are we supposed to do? Contrast any of them with the Texas republican party platform posted on the republican website and all the dem candidates look like Jesus (the nice jesus, not the republican asshole jesus).

In Texas we cannot afford to stay away from the voting booth. The state legislature has screwed us sooooo badly the past ten years.

might be seen as sexist by some and maybe it is, but to me it fits perfectly. The fact that she is all over the MSM tells me all I think I need to know - just one more incrementalist whose feet we'll need to hold to the fire to get anything real done. But somehow that damned fire never gets anywhere near their feet, does it? Certainly not close enough for them to feel any real heat from it and certainly not enough to feel any real threat. And so it goes.
