Savchenko was only used as a pawn in a prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia.

It is interesting that she has now exposed the truth about the Maidan

'War Hero' Savchenko Accused Of Terror Plot, Levels Own Accusations In Ukraine
March 15, 2018

KYIV -- Lawmaker and former Russian captive Nadia Savchenko has traded incendiary accusations with senior Ukrainian authorities and faces possible arrest over what Prosecutor-General Yuriy Lutsenko alleged was a detailed plan for a devastating "terrorist" attack on parliament.
...
Savchenko became a national hero and was greeted with fanfare when she returned to Ukraine in a prisoner swap with Russia in May 2016, but has faced mounting criticism since then. She has drawn fire for holding talks with the Russia-backed separatists without the government's consent.

In January 2017, lawmakers called for an investigation into what they said were anti-Ukrainian actions after Savchenko suggested that Kyiv would have to relax its claim on Crimea, which Russia seized after Yanukovych's ouster in 2014, in order to regain control of the territory held by the separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

More than 100 protesters were killed in the 2013-14 demonstrations, centered on Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnost (Independence Square) that preceded Yanukovych's flight to Russia. Forty-eight of them were allegedly gunned down in February 2014 by snipers who Ukrainian authorities claim received direct orders from the Moscow-friendly Yanukovych.

In her remarks on March 15, Savchenko said that she saw Parubiy, who was on the antigovernment side at the time, "leading snipers into the Hotel Ukraine," which looms over the Maidan. "I saw a blue minibus and armed people coming out of it, I have said earlier [to investigators] who those people were. Those people are now lawmakers."

She said the deaths on the Maidan will never be thoroughly investigated, asserting that the government that came to power after Yanukovych's downfall does not want it to happen.
...

I expect she may run against Tymoshenko in a bid to replace Poroshenko in the coming elections. This would be a game changer in Ukraine. The west may have to stage another 'intervention'.

and aren't the elections slated for early 2019? but my stars, that link indicates she's all over map, notably on the crimea. i'll read again it later, maybe take your link to the café. thanks, CB. as i read it, yulia's full-on banderist; that your take?

i'd been taken aback by RFE, but at the bottom is: "RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service; The quality and independence of Ukraine's media as a whole are still limited, and RFE/RL's Radio Svoboda is the country's most popular and trusted international broadcaster. Radio Svoboda celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2014.

i'd just been popping in between chores to add this:

...in the first 36 hours after such an event. If you pay close attention, you have the whole plot, the aim of the covert operation, the front group, the shooters, the physical evidence, a timeline of the action, the set up, and the nationality of the conspirators.

I specifically recall this in Benghazi, Libya, Russo-Georgian-Osettia attack, Syria's 2013 chemical attack, and Syria's 2017 Chemical attack.

Then, by the 48 hour mark, the facts are forgotten and the news-talkers start making it up. By 72 hours, an entire new narrative is in place, completely devoid of any reality, whatsoever. It's destined for chaos. And because everybody knows what really went down, they are never solved.

There are other incidents that are not obvious in that first 36 hours, for example, cyber attacks or the Skripal attack in the UK. Those require dedicated independent non-state forensics. Similarly, investigations into Flight MH17 and MH370 started strong and then became significantly clueless over time.

Ukraine has always been an open book. Within the first 12 hours we knew who the snipers were, had their photos, knew their nationalities, where they were trained, and when. The propaganda that came out of that event as well as the referendum and reunification of Crimea, I believe, changed America forever. It never let up to this day and has resulted in wide-spread insanity across the land.

The political system is what it is because the People are who they are. — Plato
CB's picture

She is a stout Ukrainian nationalist who is willing to use the Banderists who are also ultra nationalists as tools to effect her aims. She had finally realized the western engineered coup only changed the masters to whom Ukraine would serve in the future.

From Russian Prison to Ukrainian Jail – ‘Hero of Ukraine’ Nadia Savchenko arrested

It’s out of the fire and into the frying pan for so-called Ukrainian ‘Joan of Arc’ Nadia Savchenko, who has just now been arrested by Ukraine, for allegedly planning a terrorist attack inside the parliament of which she is a member.
...
She directly accused members of the current regime in power in Ukraine, including the Prosecutor General, of hiring the mysterious snipers which fired on police and protesters alike from the roofs of Kiev buildings, namely the Hotel Ukraina overlooking the Maidan.

These snipers were acknowledged in western Media, but naturally, they were blamed on Russia or President Yanokovich. The official claim was that the Snipers were targetting Ukrainians fighting for freedom. It has been stated by Russia and independent journalists for some time, however, that the snipers were, in fact, targetting both protesters and police, thereby acting as provocateurs, pushing Ukraine over the brink of war. Recently, damning evidence has been produced confirming what was already known and stated in Russian media about these snipers.

That, however, at this point, is not even the issue here, this is not to argue that Russia has claimed the snipers were put there by the current Ukrainian government, but rather to show that Savchenko is arguing that. Now the Russian claims are confirmed by one of the most violently anti-Russian people in Ukraine.

What makes Savchenko’s claims so shocking is not the claims themselves – we already knew about them, it is the fact that they are coming out of the mouth of one of the most violently Russophobic people in the country. Slowly but surely the truth in Ukraine is coming out, and Savchenko’s words proved to be the most unexpected clue, affirming the Russian account of the Ukraine crisis.

Putin played the Savenchenko affair like a Jujitsu Grand Master. Every time the US thinks they have the upper hand on him, he slips their grip and puts them to the mat - winning in Chechnya, Serbia, Ukraine, Syria and reclaiming the historical Russian jewel, Crimea, as well as turning the sanctions into absolute positives for Russia plus banning all GMO's and drugs in Russia's entire food production. All the west can do is respond with lies and coverups to save face. No wonder the neolibracons have been going apoplectic.

the braided one is a banderist. as i’d been reading a lot of phil butler recently, and the open neo-nazi mrches, more rumbles in the rada, etc. but it will say that i’d read your ‘War Hero’ link at rfe again, and it still sounds like standard reuter’s batting against the russians who stole crimea, ‘met with pro-russian separatists’ etc. in fact, just below it was ‘the many faces of savachenko, which was written by christopher miller of the kyiv post (not that it said that). you may remember that amy goodman had outrageously begun having miller and his ilk on her show....

but it does look as though tretyakov was prescient with his insider knowledge and spidey senses, doesn’t it? but he did say:

“Every month this headache will get bigger. She will no longer be sticking her middle finger to a Russian court but to Ukrainian politicians. And she’ll denounce them not to nameless journalists, but to the respected European media. And she’ll spout her nationalistic ideas and slogans a la Bandera, not in a tiny courtroom, but to the members of the European Parliament, causing the number of her distant fans to suddenly drop. “

Savchenko’s extradition will instantly transform her from a problem for Russia to a problem for the Ukraine and the West, which is why it should happen as soon as possible.”

but as you note, she’s kinda playing both ends against each other. now the kyiv post ukraine tab still has any number of “See christine lagarde? we’re really cracking down on corruption so when you get here in sept. you’ll give us enough moolah to be able to join NATO officially!” and ‘a million and a half people have fled the donbass for ukraine!”

but this deserves accolades for being such a stellar analysis:

“Putin played the Savenchenko affair like a Jujitsu Grand Master. No wonder the neolibracons have been going apoplectic.”

also, when i'd said this: "and the people love that nasty thug diktator for giving the finger to....Babylon." we hear often that even though some (many?) russians are suffering from the many cruel sanctions the west has laid on them, most of them are still glad that putin is resisting and trying to create a multi-polar world, as is china. and 'giving the finger to Babylon'...babylon is the rasta's name for the capitalist whore amerikan hegemon. hence, 'Café Babylon'.

Russia-gate One Year After VIPS Showed a Leak, Not a Hack’, Patrick Lawrence, Special to Consortium News, aug. 13

a few bits:

“None of this has altered the basic case. VIPS and forensic scientists working with it have continued their investigations. New facts, some of which alter conclusions drawn last year, have come to light, and these are to be addressed. But the basic evidence that Russia-gate is a false narrative concocted by various constituents of national power stands, difficult as this is to discern. Scrape back all that is ethically unacceptable and unscrupulously conveyed into the public sphere and you find that nothing has changed: No one “hacked” the Democratic party’s mail in the summer of 2016. It was leaked locally, from what one can make out, to expose the party leadership’s corrupt efforts to sink Bernie Sanders’ insurgent campaign to win the Democratic nomination.” [snip]

“To my knowledge, no one with an understanding of the science involved, including various former skeptics, any longer questions the validity of the specific finding based on the observed transfer rate. That remains the bedrock evidence of the case VIPS and others advance without qualification. “No one—including the FBI, the CIA, and the NSA—has come out against this finding,” Binney said Monday. “Anyone who says the speed we demonstrated can be achieved remotely, our position is ‘Let’s see it. We’ll help any way we can.’ There hasn’t been anyone yet.”

There is also the question of where and when leaks were executed. Research into this has turned out differently.

Evidence last year, based on analysis of the available metadata, showed that the copy operation date-stamped July 5, 2016, took place in the Eastern U.S. time zone. But Forensicator, one of the chief forensic investigators working on the mail-theft case anonymously, published evidence in May that, while there was activity in the Eastern zone at the time of that copy, here was also a copy operation in the Pacific time zone, where clocks run three hours earlier that EST. In an earlier publication he had also reported activity in the Central time zone.

Plainly, more was awaiting discovery as to the when and where of the copy operations. The identity of Guccifer 2.0, who claimed to be a Romanian hacker but which the latest Mueller indictment claims is a construct of the GRU, Russian military intelligence, has never been proven. The question is what G–2.0 did with or to the data in question. It turns out that both more, and less, is known about G–2.0 than was thought to have been previously demonstrated. This work has been completed only recently. It was done by Binney in collaboration with Duncan Campbell, a British journalist who has followed the Russia-gate question closely.”

[the duncan campbell whose 'analyis' was promoted by the queen of the mueller investigation/russiagate marcy wheeler.

"Campbell’s is an important and successful effort to push back against disinformation (and to get Bill Binney and Ray McGovern to back off their support for it). It does the following:' etc.

they ran simulations, looked at file sizes, etc., then:

“But they discovered something else of significance, too. At some point G–2.0 had merged two sets of data, one dated July 5, 2016, which had been known, and another dated the following September 1, which had not been known. In essence, Campbell reverse-engineered G–2.0’s work: He took the sets of data G–2.0 presented as two and combined them back into one. “G–2.0 used an algorithm to make a downloaded file look like two files,” Binney explained. “Those two shuffled back together like a deck of cards.”

“This throws various things into question. The conclusions initially drawn on time and location in VIPS50 are now subject to these recent discoveries. “In retrospect, giving ‘equal importance’ status to data pertaining to the locale was mistaken,” Ray McGovern, a prominent VIPS member, wrote in a recent note. “The key finding on transfer speed always dwarfed it in importance.”

but i guess that's what i'd meant about facts being sometimes movable feasts: sometimes collaboration yields different ways of assessing data, metadata. so i'm glad binney met with the author of the Hit Job/VIPs detractor in good faith; good on him, good on campbell.

https://consortiumnews.com/2018/08/13/too-big-to-fail-russia-gate-one-ye...

...
What Role does Evidence Play?

Rosenstein’s predicament—and there is no indication he understands it as one—brings us to an essential problem: What is the place of evidence in American public discourse? Of rational exchange?

The questions are germane far beyond the Russia-gate phenomenon, but it is there that answers are most urgent. What is implicit in the Rosenstein indictments has been evident everywhere in our public sphere for a year or more: Make a presumption supported by circumstantial evidence or none and build other presumptions upon it until a false narrative is constructed. The press has deployed this device for as long as I have been a practitioner: “Might” or “could” or “possibly” becomes “perhaps,” “probably” and “almost certainly,” and then moves on to unqualified fact in the course of, maybe, several weeks. Now this is how our most basic institutions—not least agencies of the Justice Department—routinely operate.

This is what I mean when I refer to ours as a republic in peril.

There is the argument that certain things have been uncovered over the past year, and these are enough to conclude that Russia plots to undermine our democracy. I refer to the small number of Facebook advertisements attributed to Russians, to strings of Twitter messages, to various phishing exercises that occur thousands of times a day the world over. To be clear, I am no more satisfied with the evidence of Russian involvement in these cases than I am with the evidence in any other aspect of the Russia-gate case. But for the sake of argument, let us say it is all true.

Does this line up with the Russophobic hysteria—not too strong a term—that envelops us? Does this explain the astonishing investments our public institutions, the press, and leading political parties have made in advancing this hysteria as they did a variant of in the 1950s?

As global politics go, some serious thought should be given to a reality we have created all by ourselves: It is now likely that America has built a new Cold War division with Russia that will prove permanent for the next 20 to 30 years. All this because of some Facebook ads and Twitter threads of unproven origin? Am I the only one who sees a weird and worrisome gap between what we are intent on believing—as against thinking or knowing—and the consequences of these beliefs?

There was an orthodoxy abroad many centuries ago called Fideism. In the simplest terms, it means the privileging of faith and belief over reason. It was the enemy of individual conscience, among much else. Fideism has deep roots, but it was well around in the 16th century, when Montaigne and others had to navigate its many dangers. Closer to our time, William James landed a variant on American shores with an 1896 address called “The Will to Believe.” Bertrand Russell countered this line of thinking a couple of decades later with “Free Thought and Official Propaganda,” a lecture whose title I will let speak for itself. Twenty years ago, none other than Pope John Paul II warned of a resurgence of Fideism. It is still around, in short.

has become a religion to most, derangement syndrome as it is. now we might posit that this empire has always needed an enemy or many enemies to advance itself as both ‘exceptional’ and representing ‘a true democracy’ (which can only be exported by cia/ned/usaid putsches or resource wars by R2P, (wm. blum’s long list). he has a separate list for assassinations.

but yes, NATO was re-purposed to fight the ‘revanchist putin red menace 2.0’, and as we just saw ‘novickok, novichok!’ narratives depend on pre-determined guilt, hence, yes: religious fervor’. and so far the UK's spun so many tales they can't even keep them strait! so far vlad hasn’t taken the bait as countries on the border join Nato, are ‘under Nato’s umbrealla’, etc., but as the world realigns over trade and military alliances, the Dems are increasingly nervous, sensing this may be the Empire in its death throes, lashing out incoherently (w/ the Orange One’s tweeting help).

but i'd add that the reason that the Nato think tank, the atlantic council, is now acting as an advisor to social networking and youtube is directly related. anyone caught 'not promoting the faith' will be ejected without recourse!', but okay, then there's google, too.
julian assange's 'google is not what it seems' a prime example. the photos are priceless, literally. yes he loves 'crushing the bastards'.

funny he’d brought up ‘the pope’, though. the church jettisoned the 'false doctrine?) of fideism as the per the several popes’ beliefs that the existence of gawd can ‘indeed be demonstrated by reason (logos).

Imagine how big a deal it would be if people and institutions were actively helping millions of undocumented Russians to enter, and take up residence in, the United States in defiance of the letter of the law.

Imagine cities and even whole states declaring themselves official places of sanctuary for Russians on American soil without proper documents.

Imagine laws being passed making it illegal for state and local employees to assist federal efforts to deal with Russian infiltration in any way.

please try not to mind how jumbled this may be, as i just received some fucked up bureaucratic news by email, and am discombobulated, but:

‘The Empire Reads History or Rationalizing the End of Empire’, deena stryker, aug. 11, 2018, journalneo.org:

(her critique of a recent Brooking Institute thesis) oh lawd, i just bingled for and got the link: it’s robert kagan (mr. victorin nuland), thomas wright and comrades: ‘Trump and the crumbling of the US-led world order a podcast; she listened to that we don’t have to... i’ll try to include a few pithy bits, but stryker is as verbose as ever. (she used to post at the FDL readers diaries, as i had) she’s no fan of vlad as in: ‘anti-democratic at home’ or close. but onward:

“The postwar task of the US was to “maintain general peace through multi-polar competition”. Brookings’ use of that term is surprising, given that the US is currently pushing back with everything it has against Russia over its implementation of a multi-polar world — but more about that later. Apparently, here’s where the US went wrong: “Having US forces keep the peace by occupying Japan/Germany was too narrow a view of our interests, and when [the first Gulf War] undermined the international order, we realized we had to expand NATO to keep the peace.”

Failing to note that the US uses all of these methods to pushes back against Russia and its ‘authoritarian threat’, Wright explains that: “Putin and Xi fear that liberal democracy could win out over authoritarian rule.” Although NATO has 14,000 troops lined up on Russia’s eastern border, from the Baltic to the Black Sea, Wright claims that: “The military threat to Russia has declined massively. What it fears are a free press and a market economy, which are existential threats to authoritarian regimes”.

Wright’s contribution to political science is to have identified a ‘constant struggle between competing elements of human nature’. Humans are tempted to choose protection and security over freedom, thus democracy is not a natural state, and the enlightened few must constantly struggle to impose it!

In the name of that struggle, the US has the honor of steering things toward “a liberal world order, in which free trade all but guarantees that nations will not go to war” (a theory that also goes back to the days of FDR). Only neo-liberalism (one man, one vote combined with freedom to act) is democratic, even if it results in most benefits going to the 1%. Authoritarians, most of whom in the current age make sure their people are taken care of, are to be condemned for limiting the 1%’s ability to rig the system.” [snip]

“Having snidely critiqued Russia for allowing the Russian majority in Crimea to vote to return to Russia (while failing to note that Crimea had been part of Ukraine only since 1954), Wright does admit that “the US emerged from the Cold War as an unrivaled super-power that sought to maintain and extend its military primacy so that the gap with potential rivals was so large that it would be futile to challenge it”. This policy was enshrined under President Clinton in what came to be known as the Wolfowitz Doctrine, after the name of its author, Paul Wolfowitz, and by removing its bellicose language in December, 2017, Donald Trump set the deep state resolutely against him.

In the Neo-conservative playbook, the US was forced to be the world cop ‘because if we don’t lead, no one else will’, in the words of Clinton’s bellicose Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. (This claim gave rise to the now ubiquitous phrase ‘stepping up to the plate’, a reference to the batter’s position in the all-American sport of baseball..) In a new take on the benevolent hegemon...”

“In case the reader is not convinced: “The survival of the U.S.-led order would eventually become decoupled from American primacy because once non-Western powers had converged with it, they would not go back. A democratic Russia and China would carry forward the neoliberal mantle inherited from the US.”

well you get the gist of it.

and the Intercept's yellow journalism:

‘RussiaGate Redux Part Three: Smears & Distortions’, Adam Carter - November 14th, 2017
The Intercept, by James Risen & Duncan Campell (with contributions from Sam Biddle) co-authored an article published in The Intercept on 7th November, 2017, titled: "CIA Director Met Advocate of Disputed DNC Hack Theory — at Trump’s Request"

“While you can't see it in the article, if you look at the source code of the page, you can see the description given for the article for social media sites, which states:
Mike Pompeo sought “facts” from NSA whistleblower William Binney, who says the 2016 theft of DNC emails was an inside job, not a Russian hack.

What Binney had to share were literal facts, so the entire point of writing "facts" as a quotation like this only serves to unduly undermine things and degrade perceptions of the meeting, even without people needing to click on the link to the article.
The article itself, fortunately starts out on a more promising tone. It covers some of the details of the meeting. However, it isn't long before they give themselves a reason to insinuate that Binney may have allegiance with Fox News (mostly because he has made 10 appearances in a 14 month period).” [large snip]

Next up..
‘Binney’s claim that the email theft was committed by an insider at the DNC also helps fuel one of the more bizarre conspiracy theories that has gained traction on the right: that the murder of a young DNC staffer last year was somehow connected to the data theft. Binney said he mentioned the case of Seth Rich to Pompeo during their meeting.’

"I think after all this time, the amount of fuel it would add to the conspiracy theory would be minimal. As time has gone on and more has been discovered, the premise that Seth Rich could have been murdered for reasons relating to him being a whistle-blower has actually become less bizarre than the premise that Guccifer 2.0 was a genuine Russian hacker.
The theory that Seth was killed for such a reason is far from exclusively held by the right-wing. Many progressives also want answers on this topic.

Escalating the spin further...
‘The meeting raises questions about Pompeo’s willingness to act as an honest broker between the intelligence community and the White House, and his apparent refusal to push back against efforts by the president to bend the intelligence process to suit his political purposes.’

Instead of acting as a filter between Trump and the intelligence community, Pompeo’s decision to meet with Binney raises the possibility that right-wing theories aired on Fox News and in other conservative media can now move not just from conservative pundits to Trump, but also from Trump to Pompeo and into the bloodstream of the intelligence community.’

"This paragraph tries to suggest that Pompeo's capacity to act as a filter between Trump's influence and the intelligence community completely falls apart if Trump suggests that Pompeo speak with US intelligence veterans about research, evidence, test results, etc.

It then tries to insinuate that Binney peddles "right-wing theories", drags in Fox News and "conservative media" and attempts to fear-monger using this inexcusable, melodramatic misrepresentation of circumstances.”

later, Newsweek and the WSJ... but carter’s correct that some commenters at the Intercept called the site for its yellow journalism. who needs Marcy Wheeler @ Emptywheel when the Intercept can publish this mess?
