Kissing Gargoyles

>

Greetings to the C99P community. Welcome to the Tuesday edition of "Open Threads for Open Minds", where off-topic is on target. This is a place to park your thoughts and observations, political and otherwise, in a friendly environment. Witticism and gallows humor encouraged. Smile

There is something about those scary figures on the upper reaches of buildings which brings to mind the current pickle we are in. Although gargoyles have an architectural purpose (to drain rain water away from the facade of the structure), they are also imparted with magical qualities to chase away evil spirits.

Gray Eminence

a person who wields unofficial power, esp. through another person and often surreptitiously or privately.

The writing is on the wall. Unelected rulers making a mockery of our democracy. Resistance and demonstrations prosecuted as felonies. Unabated imperialism draining our resources. So, when I see the uglies on the cornerstones, I think of the need to fight the evils. Think kissing a gargoyle would help?

Surely if we do not blush for such absurdities, we should at least regret what we have spent on them.

Give it your best shot!

But It would take a ladder to kiss one. My kitchen is guarded by two littles. My office (most kissable by one) and the family room by 5. Hub and I and US friends considered trying to build a sales market against that Catalog. We did not try. Cost me a suitcase buy en France.

Let's think of US or North American gargoyles. What would they be? Louisville City Hall has farm animals. I was thinking more pine cones and Flowers. Nothing scary. A friendly embellishment. I think that involves people power. Which I am not sure we have now.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

@riverlover Hey rl, found a few on Wikipedia. One oddly named "Chimera of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary" on a chapel in Flagstaff, AZ.

Another in D.C. with several in Canada. Sounds like your house is well protected!

@Arrow I think they are the soul-suckers but also the death-eaters, if that makes any sense.

@riverlover my Wiccan friends' argument about the many facets of death. The choice between getting the soul sucked thru a straw versus having one's death eaten away almost sounds like the choices at a really bad restaurant.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

A righteous 'rant' from Lord Byron:

Few things surpass old wine; and they may preach
Who please,--the more because they preach in vain,--
Let us have Wine and Woman, Mirth and Laughter,
Sermons and soda-water the day after.

Man, being reasonable, must get drunk;
The best of Life is but intoxication:
Glory, the Grape, Love, Gold, in these are sunk
The hopes of all men, and of every nation;
Without their sap, how branchless were the trunk
Of Life's strange tree, so fruitful on occasion!
But to return,--Get very drunk, and when
You wake with headache--you shall see what then!

Ring for your valet--bid him quickly bring
Some hock and soda-water, then you'll know
A pleasure worthy Xerxes the great king;
For not the blest sherbet, sublimed with snow,
Nor the first sparkle of the desert-spring,
Nor Burgundy in all its sunset glow,
After long travel, Ennui, Love, or Slaughter,
Vie with that draught of hock and soda-water!

If that is too old school for you, try the Jimmy Buffet version:

Yelling Man

Right now I have little to say that doesn't require an essay. Speaking of which, I just read a column by Pepe Escobar in Counterpunch (an old Counterpunch - I'm behind) about Iraq.

Iraq is getting its act together, and without US help, even though we attacked, invaded, conquered and occupied them without any justification. ( We also wrote their, IMHO defective, constitution by saying that they would have no say in their own affairs or government until they wrote one that our Viceroi would sign off on - IOW, he wrote it)

So, the article contains statements by their commanders that the internal fight against ISIS was also without US help, not so much as a bullet. Rings true. Consider, however, that we're plenty involved "fighting ISIS" in Syria. We aren't really "fighting ISIS" in Syria, we're still working to topple Assad and if possible divide the country, wresting control of key [ieces away from the government to be ruled by our proxies.

Just a little food for thought.

Also, Google is going to downgrade or otherwise bury RT, or so they say. If you use Chrome, you can go to one of RT's pages (by googling RT) and discover there the following:

Keep up with the news by installing RT’s extension for Chrome. Never miss a story with this clean and simple app that delivers the latest headlines to you.

Heh.

@enhydra lutris about Iraq getting it together without USaid. Doesn't seem (in retrospect) USmil helped much. Capital spent by UScorps not for the people, but the fighters. Time they took control back. Cheers!
