Open Thread 12-08-16: Throwback Thursday!

open thread.jpg

(Shahryar here....shaharazade has a little illness, nothing serious, and I'm swamped with work. She's authorized me to repost this open thread she wrote way back when the membership of c99 started booming, way back in March 2016. It's pretty wonky! And still timely, probably always will be.)

As a former Democrat who grew up under the political tutelage of my grand mother and my mother who were both FDR Democrat''s I no longer give a shit about the party. They were flaming liberals. My grandmothers dinning room had framed pictures of FDR's four freedoms and a portrait of Paul Robeson hanging on the wall. My grandmother was a self proclaimed socialist. My Dad used to say to my Mom 'Gretchen get off your liberal soapbox.' She took me and my grandmother to hear Eldritch Cleaver speak in the 60's. She loved Bobby Kennedy and worked for campaign here in Oregon. I did too it was my first foray into electoral Democratic politics.

So coming from this upbringing and being a radical liberal myself how did I get to the point where I flat out denounce the Democratic party and the party has no use for purist's far lefty's like me. I thought to myself today how did the Democratic party that's supposed to advocate Jeffersonian principles and FDR's New Deal get formed in the first place. So I took a timey whimey trip back to when it started.

The Democratic party as we know it was formed in 1828. Ironically the newly formed party's 1st president was Andrew Jackson. Jefferson said in 1824 of Jackson 'I feel much alarmed at the prospect of seeing General Jackson President. He is one of the most unfit men I know for such a place'.

From the online Encyclopedia Britannica
http://www.britannica.com/topic/Democratic-Party

The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in the United States and among the oldest political parties in the world. It traces its roots to 1792, when followers of Thomas Jefferson adopted the name Republican to emphasize their anti-monarchical views. The Republican Party, also known as the Jeffersonian Republicans, advocated a decentralized government with limited powers. The Federalists called Jefferson’s faction the Democratic-Republican Party in an attempt to identify it with the disorder spawned by the “radical democrats” of the French Revolution of 1789. After the Federalist John Adams was elected president in 1796, the Republican Party served as the country’s first opposition party, and in 1798 the Republicans adopted the derisive Democratic-Republican label as their official name.

During the 1820s new states entered the union, voting laws were relaxed, and several states passed legislation that provided for the direct election of presidential electors by voters (electors had previously been appointed by state legislatures). These changes split the Democratic-Republicans into factions, each of which nominated its own candidate in the presidential election of 1824..... Andrew Jackson won the most popular and electoral votes, but no candidate received the necessary majority in the electoral college. When the election went to the House of Representatives Clay—who had finished fourth and was thus eliminated from consideration—threw his support to Adams, who won the House vote and subsequently appointed Clay secretary of state. Jackson, whose strength lay in the South and West, referred to his followers simply as Democrats .Jackson defeated Adams in the 1828 presidential election.

Well no wonder this party sucks fer gods sake. I went back further to the beginnings of the early American political factions and partisan parties. I won't go into the Founder's factional brouhahas but I did run into an interesting tidbit that pertains to my topic... 'Federalist No. 10'. It is an essay written by James Madison for The Federalist.

Federalist No. 10 continues the discussion of the question broached in Hamilton's Federalist No. 9. Hamilton there addressed the destructive role of a faction in breaking apart the republic. The question Madison answers, then, is how to eliminate the negative effects of faction. He defines a faction as "a number of citizens, whether amounting to a minority or majority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community". He identifies the most serious source of faction to be the diversity of opinion in political life which leads to dispute over fundamental issues such as what regime or religion should be preferred.

However, he thinks that "the most common and durable source of factions has been the various and unequal distribution of property. Those who hold and those who are without property have ever formed distinct interests in society". He saw direct democracy as a danger to individual rights and advocated a representative democracy in order to protect what he viewed as individual liberty from majority rule, or from the effects of such inequality within society. He says, "... a pure democracy, by which I mean a society consisting of a small number of citizens, who assemble and administer the government in person, can admit of no cure for the mischief's of faction. A common passion or interest will, in almost every case, be felt by a majority of the whole; a communication and concert result from the form of government itself; and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party or an obnoxious individual.

So there you have it my musings on the sorry state of partisan politics at a time when it looks like were going to be treated to another Corrupt Bargain like the one that decided the election of 1824 and led to the formation of the Democratic party in 1828.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrupt_Bargain

The "corrupt bargain" that placed Adams in the White House and Clay in the State Department launched a four-year campaign of revenge by the friends of Andrew Jackson. Claiming the people had been cheated of their choice, Jacksonians attacked the Adams administration at every turn as illegitimate and tainted by aristocracy and corruption.

Anybody but Old Hickory for Pres. with his crime against humanity the Trail of Tears and his expansionist war.

If your memory serves you well

And I just said good luck....

enjoyed your demexit piece. New dealers shaped my political life. They left the party to support Henry Wallace.

History may look back on Sanders in a similar way to H. Wallace....largely a forgotten footnote.

Have a good day everyone!

Over night here, a man was shot and then run over by a man in a pickup, reported by several witnesses in the nearly-empty Walmart parking lot. Victim is deceased. Police were alerted by witnesses about the vehicle, there was a short chase, and then the suspect [I hate these terms!] pulled into a driveway of a house, shot a long gun at police and barricaded in the house. After hours of multiple LEAs there, and evacuation of nearby homes, suspect surrendered to a robot that was officer-assisted in gaining entry to the house.

Major PTSD trigger for me. But my front door is unlocked, so no meltdown. Law enforcement has changed. I watched part of the 11:00 press conference, and got creeped out by the wide stance of the various heads of police/sheriff/state police.

Victim was a 54 y/o UPS driver heading home after a 12-hour shift.

I have a nasty itchy scary looking rash from my feet to my neck. I got it from using a new lotion made with Borage oil the label said it was for sensitive skin. lol. According to the dermatologist this was a contact dermatitis allergic reaction to the lotion. 10 days ago I slathered it all over my legs and feet as the weather here is cold and dry with winds 50-60 mph that suck the moisture right out of you skin. Even the cat is itching. I then put on high topped Doc Martins and tight leggings with polyester in them. In my 30's I had chronic exema which just went away once in my 40's. The doc says that the lotion and tight clothes triggered the reaction and the rash is the worst in from my waist down and in the same areas I used to get excema flare ups. It's getting better now it's slowly fading not so red and the itching is subsiding. On top of all this we both got some bizarre stomach bug going around. Sure is taking it's sweet time leaving but as the doctor said this isn't going away overnight. The worst part is it made it hard to concentrate on anything other then eeekkkk I itch!

So no more borage? Things do have a way of falling apart. I stopped using Naproxen after numb lips. Knew better. Our 6 y/o son got stung, probably by hornet, and had an anaphylactic reaction; he's all over that as a grown-up and over 3 years of allergy shots, with me as mom. But now that I live by myself, I tend to try to be more cautious. Did you get cortisone or anything?

I used them back when I had chronic execma and the side effects we're worse then the freaking break outs. They caused me to get acne on top of the excema patches as they just invite infections to make themselves at home The doctor said I could use Vaseline or Crisco as a moisture sealer. Crisco! Yikes. I had put olive oil on my legs when they got insanely dry and cracked before I went to the dermatologist. I had looked up home remedies for rashes and one site said that olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties. I said how about organic olive oil? She said if it felt good use it. It's worked fine the rash is now healing and fading. I went barefooted and wore loose skirts instead of pants for a week but now I'm fully dressed in loose cotton layers of clothes. It's too damn cold to go bare.

I'd keep using it as a lotion for dry skin after my rash heals except that I smell like an Italian kitchen. Now to find a substitute for my former lotion. I will certainly test any new lotion on a small area before slathering it all over my self. I did take antihistamines for 4 days during the worst of it. They got me through the insane itching and painful cracking and peeling part. Deep breathing relaxing exercises (needleless acupuncture) that I learned from my Chinese acupuncturist/cardiologist also helped.

We seem to having a minor blizzard here in Portland with winds 50 to 60 mph and snow. 3 inches predicted and the temperature is currently 28 degrees. Hey at least the dormer roof is fixed and I'm on the mend. Today before the snow hits shah is going to get some bundles of firewood in case of power outages. Not a bad time to stay indoors and not have to cover my healing skin up.

insure the oligarchy's control. Direct democracy would endanger that. The 1% is a lot smaller than the 99%.

The funny thing about those who argue for this system, that it keeps the majority from trampling on the liberty of the minority, is just take a look at this representative system. Could our rights and liberty be more trampled under direct democracy than they are now under oligarchic rule? I doubt it. I'm willing to take my chances with Mr. and Mrs. Jones/Garcia/Jackson rather than being ruled by the rich.

Get well soon shaharazade

1. No COLA this year, for how many years in a row?
2. Cost of Medicare went up.
Therefore, even less coming in next year than this year.

I'm living with my daughter. I don't have to pay rent. I contribute to the food bill but even if I didn't, they would still feed me.

But what about people who don't have that security to fall back on?

The cost of food seems to be rising by 10% every year. The number of prescription medicines increases by about one a year. And so on.

Even cat food is higher than it used to be! Smile

As non-productive members of society, well how dare we expect free stuff! After all, if I am not productive how can I expect special treatment let alone · · ·

I wonder if I will be forced to live my last years of life the way I lived the first two decades of my life? If that is the way of the world, then: No thank you, I will opt out.
