Adventures on the Border
Thursday night, our friend Alison came over and told Taylor Ann and I that former Governor Jan Brewer, Senator Jeff Sessions, and Sheriff Mark Dannels would be having a press conference in the morning, at the Border in Naco. They would be there, partly, to campaign for 'new leadership (Trump) that would better secure our Border'. Taylor immediately cut an old sheet in half, and coated it with gesso, and I tried to figure out some spacing for the letters, and before we went to bed, we had a sign drying on the living room floor.
The press conference was scheduled at 8AM, but another friend, Gretchen, asked us to meet there at 7, so we could figure out where they were going to do it. It was supposed to be in front of the house that had been a tunnel exit, but we weren't sure which one it was. We split up, and started looking for a 'pink house near the High School', on a tip from some of the local kids.
While driving around, we spotted a convoy of large, dark colored SUVs and pickups, and knew that had to be it. Alison chased them to the Border near Willson Road, and then to the Border crossing, where they had a short photo op. Alice Hamers explained to one of the Sheriffs Deputies that the money could be better used for education in the state (currently #50 in education spending in the U.S.) He snarkily replied that "oh yeah, education would solve ALL our problems"...proving her point.
Then everyone piled into their vehicles again, and hurried across town to the pink house, where a cameraman was setting up for an interview. Jan Brewer spoke, and you can see the results in Alison's video below. Of particular note were her comments that 'they are Changing Our Demographics', and her tone of voice when she realized that we had been the backdrop of her interview. The announcement of the press conference had been in the Phoenix paper the day before, but apparently this video never aired. I guess we spoiled it! I think Alison's video, below, came out just as she intended it.

The group included one of our City Councilmen,
and Alice Hamers is currently running for School Board (after 30 years of teaching). Alison, as 'the Lone Protester' is the towns videographer, and accompanied Taylor Ann to the Dem Convention in Philly...the video link above will take you to lots of other videos, if you are interested. And Walking Mary has been an activist since the 60s, and is known locally as "Walking Mary" because she was always walking or marching somewhere. She suffered a severe stroke this Spring...can't talk, or walk(!) any more, but she still loves to see stuff like this. It's an honor to be a part of the Walking Mary Peace and Justice Brigade.

When I see the Nixon mask I think of HST swimming in his pool
with it on. Just recently it dawned on me just how many parallels HRC has to Richard Milhaus Nixon.
Ah man, Neil..."Campaigner." So many, so many, gems scattered across the grappling-with-our-beautiful-hippie dreams 70's. First heard it one the mind-boggling 3 album set "Decade," which was lent to me by the coolest kid in my school in 8th grade who had older siblings who in my mind at the time had the best record collection (a very exciting prospect for a budding rock devotee). The penetration was indelible. Could not believe how many amazing songs in one place, by one guy.
Great video Bisbonian. Again, your peeps doing it up right. This kind of thing excites/encourages me on many levels. If you are a conscientious Leftist, and have the facilities and technical knowledge to put together such types of videos, these kinds of efforts are invaluable. We are the media. As my friend would repeat during Occupy, "Become The Media." Use these opportunities to both teach people and make them less of afraid of confronting their elected officials.
Of course, it also exposes just how venal the whole apparatus is: the elected and formerly elected coming to make little public relations videos, the jughead, pawn of the oligarchy cop intervening to whisk away the RW fear-mongering fascist who needs these kinds of staged PR ploys to be used as red meat to throw the gullible, as soon as the videographer began saying "We've never felt afraid. We're afraid of the militarization of the border."
Making this video and sharing it helps to show how much of a house of cards the whole thing is, by attempting to strip away the veneer of these people somehow being exalted public servants who have our best interest at heart. They're just like all the rest of us, still trying to figure this life thing out, without any kind of special powers. Only they've been poisoned by lack of conscience, driven by a relentless quest for money and power, led by the nose by their donors.
Have to pull up some of the passages from the "The Great Shark Hunt" I've been re-reading lately to share with folks here. Uncanny the resemblance of Nixon to Hillary.
